okay - here's another BC picker. I'm in Alberta right now, and although I know I should be able to find all the info I need online, I am having no luck after hours of searching. BC - http://bcwildfire.ca/History/LargeFires2011.htm but in Alberta or Sask, I can't find the info. Any help? I'm planning on spending sunday and monday scouting.

I have never been to the Yak where ever that is but the Yaak River in Montana used to have some sweet morel areas. I may never get back to do more research there being as I have been informed that we now live near Timbuktu, not quite but it reportedly can be seen from a high point near by. ......... Perhaps ten-buck-too is a good place to visit for fungi, let us know how you do.

sport, I was attempting to be facetious about the variety of lobster while being helpful. I certainly agree with you and Boletus Joe, no one took me out to show where the natural patches were or how or where the various types of fire morels grow. It is an ongoing process of garnering information in discussions with others around a campfire or wherever who have been-there-done-that and personal experience. Often a buyer will recommend where to look but there is no guarantee that someone else has not been-there-&-picked. If anyone who has limited experience expects a buyer or forager to pay them as they learn how-to-do-it then they might consider getting off the substances which may be blocking reality.

BC picker, in the long run it feels a lot better when you find mushrooms on your own, instead of someone telling you where to go! Where is the fun in that? The sense of acomplishment? I agree with B joe...research! Its not too hard buddy, find last years burns, drive around, find a buyer (easy) sit around, share some bud, keep humble, listen to the oldtimers and then go for a hike and PICK MUSHROOMS. Good luck buddy!

Hello BC picker.... Why don't you try the same tool you used to post your message. You say your set up to travel etc. But that is only the last 10% being a picker.... The other 90% is research research and more research..... and the WEB is the best resource out there. You can't expect everyone to tell you where to go and what to do..... Why would they.....cause they would be giving you the fruits of THEIR research. Sorry to be so negative..... But you remind me of the fellow that comes to town and sets up a new cafe because a lot of people live there.... But does not pick up the phone book to see that there are already 40 cafes just like his.... Sorry...

Anybody want to host a Forest Service campground on a mountain lake in southwest Oregon? Email me for more details, contact info and location of campground. Ask questions on the board, if you like. The campground opens in early June, when the snow melts, and closes the day before matsi season opens in the Cascades. There is also a position at a snow park. Put it together and you could hang out at Bolin Lake for the summer, go matsi picking in the Cascades and be back in CJ for matsi season here, while hosting the snow park. Could work out to be an almost year round position, with time to mushroom hunt. Matsiman

dano! Happy new year! :) yeah, i do dream about morels, from Easter onwards. it's just that this year, they seem to be early around here. i am going to go to one spot I know, with cottonwoods, and see what's doin. And Ontario had the almost summer temps for a bit, and one guy found some sweet eary naturals. So, the fear is that the season will be so early, and only last a week. haven't heard back from him since I reported in, about a week or so ago, so I'm thinking he took a week or two off work, combined the time off with Easter weekend, and is hitting the burns there. But I don't do any of it for money any more. just food for me and the family and friends. :) keeps me saner than the other way. :) ~~ And, fiddleheads... Are you talking about the bracken fern fiddles, or the ones from ostrich fern (Matteuccia?) - which is the official fiddlehead fern. it's not native to the westcoast. but it grows really well here, cultivated or not. I hear that there is a good market for watercress, believe it or not, just have to get the restau's lined up ahead of time. ... kind of like with shrooms! :) Anyhoo, I'll keep you posted with the season. My email hasn't changed. Cheers! FB

shroomkid hehe you sound just like me when i was younger .i wouldnt sleep thinking about shrooming but there wasgood money then .my advice to you would be save your money and mabey do fiddleheads in theearly spring. im told the island produces a few not sure of location tho. i got lots of work again thisyear may not pick. if you want to go north for pine call me ill hook you up with nice patch ( no charge) .still too cold here for morels to start. newbies dont pay just listen with your ears and be polite it works . good luck to all this year and stay safe

Hey golden lobo and others-thanks for sharing so much insight to how picking has been in your life- I was a city boy from Houston, my first picking was in Telluride at the Wild Mush Festival- my first foray with Andrew Weil 20 years ago. I have since lived in Seattle, Whitefish MT,. Sedona and picked all over the West. We got 12 inches of snow down here in Sedona, 56 inches at the Snowbowl 2 weeks ago, but it has really been drying out fast. I am gonna check a yellow spot this morning at Sedona elevation. There may still be burn picking on the Rim country and the Whites, but this dry spring is whittling down my hopes. Also not much snow in the Whites these past few storms. Records show early-mid May for picking in the whites so there is still time....gonna check another sub irrigated canyon spot Sunday for yellows....

Unless your a buyer, then you want to train all the pickers you can and send them into everyones best patches..... Is'nt that how you make lots of money....That's what I was told....... That you could make lots and lots of MONEY in this business. Money money money..... screw up the ground, screw up the bush rape and pillage. get 'er done.... Till it's all gone..... Does anyone remember what happened to all the Yew (bark) trees a few years back.... Rhino horn, Ivory, Coho, shark fin. The list goes on and on. Then we have the government letting them export all the trees out of the country..... not one decent Channie patch to be found on the coast......

I recall meeting a 'professional' picker who required newbees to work for one year with him on the circuit while paying all of their own expenses, the professional would keep all of the selling profits of the year. It makes me wonder how much revenue was lost over the next few years by the 'pro' and just how hard the newbee actually worked that first year as they learned where and how the mushrooms grew. I never made that mistake but I have possibly made enough to fill a book all on my own.
