Garf......................skookumchuck or Skatin is about 22 miles from Tipella or Port Douglas where I live. Yes the winters can be difficult out there in the bush but the Pro's outweigh the Con's for living in that kind of isolation.I drive out the west Harrison road every weekend to go see my kids who live in Kelowna. Don't know phil but when I'm up there I kinda keep to myself with so much area to explore :) enjoy ur stay and I know we will cross paths one day till then stay safe and full buckets.

ChuckinKamloops.............yes indeed there are still some good samaritans left in this fast paced world where most people are too worried about thier own selfish little lives to help out others when in need. It seems to me that in the mushroom circles there are more good hearted human beings than in most other walks of life, and I for one am HAPPY to be included in the mushroom world :) .....................Shoegy are you still in the same place at the bottom of the hill? Coffee and a Pow Wow sounds good. Tomorrow I am going to the Nahatlatch to do some spring fishing maybe I can stop on my way through. ttys Full buckets to all :)

I just want to thank Bill for helping me out last week. I was in a real jam and he drove me into Kamloops to pick up what I needed to get rolling again. It was a late night and I would not have made it home had he not helped me out. there's not many Buyers who would drive you two hours for a cup of coffee. Thanks again Bill! :D Prayers out your way Trudy!

Rainbow Warrior, I happen to be headed into the hotsprings for Monday night, if you have some free time to come to The Springs then pop by and say hello. We should be a van and dirtbike in a campsite by 7-8pm, likely head down there as soon as we get setup. Not sure about the mushrooms, but what a nice place to live, if not including stores and cities.

Ive been to Chilko lake area a few times and loved it. You are right about leaving the forest the way it was when you walk into it, and am teaching my children the right way to harvest the matsi without destroying the ground. It should look like we were never there. lots of luck and full buckets to all............... gunna go hit a fire close to home tomorrow and can already taste those delicous morels mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm :)

hey rainbow warrior ,,, have heard about the skagit valley and that they watch pretty close during mushroom season.... had a friend who was up there and he said he found a big pile of buttons close to the road that were thrown out and cut up .... figures the park patrollers caught someone with them and cut them ,,,left them to seed .....fortunately i never deal with parks and the tweedsmuir is isolated mostly so its not patrolled a lot.... the law is on the books to prevent worse things than mushrooming so its understandable ,,,,should respect all areas like its a PARK .... ... that theory works wonders.... glad you're doing good on the morels and i think they are almost done here .... blondes and greys now but those are really nice.... full buckets ger

Is Kelly Creek a prov. park? People do pick pine in Tweedsmir Prov. Park without being bothered by bc parks, i'm pretty sure morel picking in Eastbranch will be the same. I really don't think bc parks have the right or funding to chase down pickers unless there's a need for picking permits.

When you get upset after reading a post, or feel you have some kind of issue with someone here. please think about what you are going to post, and if you think it is negative, Try emailing or maybe have a private talk with whoever you my may have a issue with. As far as price of mushroom issues. You will never get what you think the mushrooms are worth. And the market and the supply and demand quantity of mushrooms available will always dictate the current price. With many people out of work these days. there are many many more pickers flooding the market with mushrooms and the price will drop low when this happens. So if everybody could please use a little restraint when posting. It would be nice to see

I was up there(Kelly Lake) a week and a half ago. Another Fir fire that looked too dry to produce. I have walked miles through Fir this year to find no sign of Morel. The areas in the Prince George Fire district should produce better yields. I am not financing an expedition to scout that area with the volatility in the global market right now. If someone wants to hire me I would love to show them the patches.

Carla, I have great success with freezing them fresh. I wash them first and let them air dry. Then straight into ziplock bags. As long as they go straight to heat(in the oven, in a pan, in soup)and aren't defrosted, they are no different than fresh. Daddy

All things considered the price Bill and Trudy are paying for Morels is more than fair taking into consideration the fact that the world economy is going for a big crap right now. I'm sure that if you were to properly dry the mushrooms you pick you may make a few bucks extra for your efforts. For now the complainers should take a look at the realities of the big picture. I am glad I have someone to buy my mushrooms for 4 bucks right now.

For personal consumption one alternative to drying is cooking and then freezing. As long as they are sealed well after cooking and cooling they should last you for 6 months :-)

There is nothing wrong with Ashsplash mushrooms that are being dried. I would gladly pay 50 cents a pound for them. As far as brown stem... we have had 2 great days of sun, the stems will be white or the mushroom is done. I know they don't buy brown stem so don't say that the mushrooms bought today were all crap. The Price should be 4 dollars a pound for sun picked mushrooms 3.50 for wet. Fresh market mushrooms should be higher. I was told that the price was 6 dollars in Lytton. I will be out tomorrow to pick some nice white stem...

I have finally come out of the flu-bed and picked a few merkles, I had a hot tip that was apparently a bit too strenuous for my old ravaged body and I only got about 10 pounds of naturals. I was really surprised at the response given to my statement of " "...other than that I have had no involvement in any forays but am willing to teach a few who are interested in more truth if & when I have the time." " it seems to me that several posters on this board are interested in educating people in proper fungal procedures. I did not say I objected to paid forays. I have even been out foraging with August and Augie and gave them copies of my photographs of what we had found. ...... I do stand corrected though for I had forgotten about the mushroom forays in college back in the 70's & being as I was paying tuition for college biology credit it may be considered as a paid foray, lol. ........ I also forgot about several 'dates' where I took girl friends up for a day hike to examine the flora and fungi... hummmm, forest fungal fun

Morels, fire and the pine beetle - I spent a happy day in an interior fire yesterday and noticed a real patchiness to the presence of morels - some spots had lots and others were completely bare. I wonder if areas that had beetle killed pines before the fire are producing in the same way as areas where the trees were alive before the fire? An image from the hunt: http://public.fotki.com/ajtree/morels - it's very hard to stop and take pictures when all I want to do is keep picking!

I was on the Lava canyon/Chilko River fire a week ago and no action whatsoever, even the road wasn't rutted yet in the rain. It was 20 degrees in the daytime, but after an hour stopping at different burns beside the road I couldn't find a single one. Too cold at night maybe? The plateau was only slightly wet on the top 1/2", but maybe this has changed now. Anyone know whats the deal there? If they do appear I can't imagine there would be cars everywhere on the road, the road is one lane wide mostly with much blind corners and sandy cliffs, etc. I was on my dirtbike but I guess someone driving a 4x4 would have to be super careful....no ones going to find you if something goes wrong out there!

JT, I would say that there is nothing free but freedom. I understand way so many people are down on pay forays but do you really know what there learning? well let's say you find a place that you like to pick and and you going back year after year then one day you find it was trashed by people that know not what there doing and you run into them and what well you say?, now what do you think there going to say to you after you try to teach them on how to pick and save the patch's of mushrooms and there Pine's?. If you have been reading the board over the last five year's then you should know what other's have been mad about!. Those that pay to attend a foray want to learn more then those that just going out with other's. I know some people here have been to a foray and have learn more then someone that goes out with those that have only been picking for three are four year's and still they have no real judgement on how find the right place's for what there looking fore and they well tell you what they won't you to know and to lead to the wrong place's. I have done it to other's just to save high grade patch and I did it just to keep those the would trash the place. 34 going on 35 years and I still don't know all there is to learn and I do tell those that pay to learn that know one kind know everything. I would say that most people that attend a foray have little time to go out and spend hours in the field like most of us and they also want to know what they are eating if someone was to cook up a meal of shrooms. I know I was one many years back and later took a class and yes I had to pay for what I learn and this is way I teach people. I'am just a guide for a club of people and I don't even pick for myself unless I'm not out teaching and then and only then I spend time looking for New Patchy. J.T. I would like to have this talk with you in a e-mail or over the phone but that would be up to you. Just ask and me and we can pick a time. There are many people here that just stop to read the board and learn without even asking and I would say they are learning the same way I did......! by the way you also pay to play when you fill up with and buy food are a permite's and supples for you Hunt are you could call it a foray. A" I trust you, but I trust not you friend's -as one onec said

I don't mind being undercut, but seven a pound is ridiculous!! If your going to sell privately at least keep your price up,don't give them away!!

Ha, if you think that I was out to trash someone, then you are all wrong. My only statement was to let those that know of me and the Problen that some have with what I do for my living. What I have giving to new mushroom pickers is the tools to learn what is safe to take home for dinner. As I see it, there is no big money to be made anymore and the old day's are past , There are some who still think there going to get rich like the 49er's when gold could be found. For some time now most of you have been posting on how the buyer's are paying a very low price for what you have been bring in to sale. There are to many people out to make a buck are two and you are only making ,gas money, beer money and (beer money is just $50 a day )and for food and some of you take your trash to the wood's and lieve it there. There are many good folk who love what they do every year and injoy the Forest as I do. But what about those people that are trying to teach other's the do's an the don't and what about those that come here to hide like a Virus and when someone like me that post here for some years now and Virus's come out with there ture colers. Yes we where filming for a show and I did tell those that we had left a spot to be film and they left for a week and on day of filming who show up ,a Virus. Later that I was called on by a Friend the work's as a Forest Service Officer. He was told that someone in a camp near the burn was trashing the site with Beer Can's. When ask about this,I told him about this Person and or person's and I told him that I know of the party that was drinking the same tipe of beer and it was the only can's around and they could be found at are camp or those that was camping near us. I did say to him that I would pass it on that the beer can's where to be pick up and that other people have reported it. This is what I call My Back Yard and it's only 45 min's from home. I don't fill that most people would like Trach in there nick of the Wood's. All I every did wanted we to teach people to be safe and know what they are picking so that no one that had dinner with them would end up six feet underground are need a liver transplant. Most of the people that have been to are foray's only wanted to just be safe on what they take home. How many of you have seen the way the store's keep there wild mushrooms out on the shelf's. There is no one really helping to keep them fresh like most of us know how, and when some people look at what they are trying to sale at the store's you and I get a bad rip for what some one ele's is not doing right and then those that well come to are Forays learn how to find and when to look and end up bringing home the vary fresh and are happy. if you find me wrong for what I'am doing then you are wrong for I and many other's have sale's of what it only the vary fresh and the best. So I well leve it at this and you can learn from the wise are the have not. Bucket to you all........A"

This board is getting as bad as the bush some pickers leave, trash all over . I picked the Barriere fire 2004, and i asked my buyer how to pick. Babies was a no no , I even got to harvest two or three crops by leaving babies. But towards the end it was terrible ,baskets and garbage all ove. My son joined me a few times and what we packed in we packed out ,law of the land.I was 61 with ashma, met some great guys and made some money, not as much as the guys i met but they been doing for years ,but i was happy and got along with all.If they were picking there i just looked else where .We should all try to get along and enjoy it,I 'm hoping to get out again. So good luck and lets pick clean and leave clean ,a mess makes us all look bad

While it is a noble thought, the sad reality is that a number of these people will ignore what they are taught as soon as they are on there own. This is not to say that what they are doing is right or wrong. But most of us who has shown people some of our hard earned patches can tell you a horror story or to.

I say, give each other your personal email and hash it out there, like Woofer say's, this is not the place for it. I personally send people to this board to learn from you, and to buy from you, not to scare them away!!!! Your all a good bunch of people here, I respect each & every one of you that hit the ledges with the ground three inches from your face in the climb, to get that last Morel. That's what we need to be sharing with the people who visit here, who don't know what that's like. We risk life & limb to harvest mushrooms for people who can't do it for themselves. So let's tell them what a pickers life is really about, rather than what's edited out for those who see what's going on, on TV. Share & instill the mushroom Fever, that's what I say !! I swear to God it's gonna kill me, and that's okay with me,,,,,,,,,,,,,Dwight In New Brunswick,,, P.S. I'm just Bullshitting you guy's, I haven't seen a ledge since 2005 and to tell you the truth, after this Fiddlehead season, I don't got it in me to even come out there and try, I gotta face reality, I can't, although my younger heart is there with you all. For everyone's info, Marion are (the Tacoma kid) there are the same person. There are people that would like to know about Fire Burn Morels and other muchrooms and are not going to tresh are Forest with Beer Can and other Trash like Tacoma Kid did on a burn in my back yard two ago year's back and than put me down for Teaching others how to pick the Right way. What I do is what other's should have known how to and what there doing to the many patch's that some just don't care about and if they make some money to buy more beer to tresh the forest with there beer can's. I well alway's teach other's and if I make so money doing so it's ok to. I know there are those that would say it's wrong but, IS IT REALLY?. The Forest Service Sales permit's and they don't even care if people dig deep just to pull small buttons that no one want's to buy the small one's. Last year I took some friends to a patch of Pine's and they seen what bad picker's can do to a bed. It was sick to see what people done to a patch that I have gone to for many years and what they have done is what I am teaching other's not to do. Some of you well have something to say on what i'm doing but if you have been picking as long as I have then you to would be sick to call yourself a Picker. What the Mycological Clubs would like to us have stop at what we have been doing for many years. I love to Pick and I would like to walk into the Forest and see good picker's doing what other's should have done Right the first time. If you still won't to put me and other's down just for trying to teach the right way to new people then going right ahead and do so and the next time someone walks into your patchy's and its been tresh think of what I am doing for the Forest and You. You can pay me now are pay my later. Those that I well teach well be the batter picker's and not all of them are from are near your home town most well be from the east coast and only here to learn how to take good care of the forest and not turn out like Tacoma kid also known as marion. If you really won't to know something about Tacoma kid (or marion) then if you know Joe that buy's sometime's in packwood ask him. Marion is the kind of picker that would take the baby's and tell you that he saw other's doing the same and didn't want to lose out on a pay check. That is all I have to say and there are other's that well stand next to me and tell you I have the right and that I have done my vary best to teach those that want to learn the right way. Thank you and remember to tell those that are not good at what they do to learn from other's and keep it clean.

I will be selling to them myself this year. Make your own arrangements with them, but they did promise me that they will be fare with you. Dwight In New Brunswick

I hear the market is already flooded with morels yet I don't hear of many buyers buying or pickers picking. Any word of a buyer at the Kelly Creek fire near Clinton?

The time is almost upon us, and since there are some among us that will sell knowledge to those that have not paid their due's, and I mean, sell, not given freely. Boo! They sell all of us out that has spent the time, blood, sweat and tear's, year after year to learn what we have about mushrooms. For someone to sell the information at a couple hundred dollars ahead is despicable! Now is the time for me to remember to pray, even for for the ones who cause me grief! I'm sorry to vent on this board, but this is what I beleave!
