Hello gang, Estey01, looks like you need to start phoning the restaurants in Whistler. It will only take about an hour of your time to make the first few calls. Decide on your price first, and be ready with at least one basket, because sometimes a chef will be happy to create a special dish that night, and will want to see the product right away, so he can get his staff on to prepping them for dinner service. And Thanksgiving is coming up next weekend, so if they know now, then they can plan for their special meals next weekend. Also, never call a kitchen from 5:00 - 9:00. Messages left before then are fine, usually. And, doing a general pre-cleaning on them will go a long way to creating a good relationship with the chef. Good luck! :)

While some may wish the law protected their apparent mushroom tourism monopoly, there is no such law on the books. In a related case, legal experts agree that dui checkpoint locating software can not be made illegal without encroaching on our right to freedom of expression guaranteed in the constitution.

Passing information to alert criminals about a law enforcement operation is VERY illegal. One would think that with the amount of attention on here focused on the illegal activities of Chris Matherly's Morel Mushroom Hunting Club that he would change his m.o. It would seem that Chris is ready to ride this baby until he kills it. Is anyone that has been burned by Chris a member of Angie's List? Chanties, clustered blues, lobsters and hogs yesterday. Price will be dropping on chants and lobsters soon, crop is pretty much here on west slopes of the Cascades that got rain and in the Coast Range. They are still tiny. Salem

Hi estey01 - why don't you just dry or freeze them to feed yourself and your family and friends? dried ones in a pretty packet also make wonderful xmas prezzies that all the cooks love to get. :) Little miss shroomer, if i had the time off, i'd join you for a jaunt, and a stay at the hot springs too! One of these years! I'm itching for bush time - mushrooms, hiking, scenery, and good company, and a good road trip... and if things were really rosie, a hot springs with a hard bed in a nice room, with a kitchenette, so we can cook up our treasure for supper and breaky! :) Also, everyone concerned about the Tofino mushroomers gone missing, no need to worry any more - the young couple has been found, and are ok. :) So, wish me full buckets this weekend - I finally get a little time away, and will report back on Sunday or Monday. Anyone know the bolete situation around Nitinat Lake? buddy wants to check it out. (i want pines, chants, and angel wings...) Full buckets to all!

The price in Terrace started around $12lb for pines in mid Aug with Lobster season, then drifted to around $18lb. After the early pop around end Aug early Sep, the price dropped to around $10lb and $7lb on weekends. Once that early flush, which was early but not that big, ended in the Terrace area the price went to the low twenties as there are "hardly any pines around at the moment". All can rest assured that when the next flush comes, the price will plummett. As TC points out, it's low for supply. ITK, they really are hilarious.

Hey old man.I knew that if I put the cash in the bank it would get your attention .I ended up going to the patch on saterday cause I couldn't stand it anymore, all i could see is buttons everytime I closed my eyes.it's been a long time since that's happend to me.Anyways I went to see how big the patch actualy is,and to see how fast they really grow from the last time that I was there.so off I went with a small pack thermos lunch and ect,oh,and one glad bag cause I figuered that there wont be much to pick just yet.Well let me tell ya,have you ever gone across a patch and not picked, that has got to be the hardest thing to do.after a little while I realized shit I gotta stop for a smoke. Then I look up and noticed that holly crap i've got atleast 20 piles there, well shit I only have one glad bag and a already full pack dam,so off comes the cote and the shirt.I eventually get it all loaded up,now I'm in my teashirt cold and I've got a 3hr hike back to the shack.Eventually I get there and it's 3:30 what a relief, but then I noticed my door is on the ground what the hell.A frikin bear got into the shack and distroyed the place shiiiiit! Just what I don't need.it took me all night and most of yesterday to get it cleaned up.Now here I'am in town getting supplies and materials to fix the joint,to top it all off I still don't know how big the patch is.I also Gita get a hold of buyer to set up for another day cause of set back.Oh ya I'm also sending baskets should be there today later priority. One more thing and you'll probably never hear me say this again but,Help. I could really use some there's no way that I could possibly keep this patch clean by my self, and I hate to say but, if you can't make it here then I will need to send for my and your older boys.No shit man .anyhow sounds like your doing ok as well so just keep sending me whatever you can cause I'm sure you can use the extra cash especially at these pricess.well must go now lots to do and no time to do it all.my heart goes out to the family of the dead picker found that's the last thing that anyone wants to hear.be safe out there and don't leave home without proper precautions.until next time buddy take care.

Hello all! nice to read some familiar handles. :) PineKing, Lobo, old man, Pascal. One of these days we'll bump into each other out there. I need to retire so I can come out hunting more. :) The season is underway on VI now, thankfully. Couldn't believe that I found some out of season chants in July though, after that freak rain we had. Sweet to have them so early. hope that patch produces this fall. And, yeah, Jbaulne, has anyone gotten back to you yet? I'm hoping for a buyer from south VI. Also, you can try advertizing on craigslist and UsedVictoria - make sure you include a picture. you'll get a better dollar selling direct. or start calling high end restaurants. little miss shroomer, the Nass region is huge, and anyone saying it is done now, is leading you astray, unless the frost has come, or snow is flying. keep on hunting there, or come south, or west, or downhill! lots of season left. :) and, thanks to the folks posting prices - nice to hear they've come back up again a little. selling direct is still the highest buck though. but a pain in the ass if you have a lot to sell... craigslist and UsedVictoria were good two years ago for me. and the white pages a full battery on my phone! :) full buckets!

shroomer chick...The season is just starting. New chanties are coming all over the place, pines are about to start. The chanties flushed once and baked in the sun, and the rain came and they soaked it up like a sponge and went mouldy. But new ones are coming and the season could last a lot longer than mid october. Wait for a week and take another walk in the bush and see whats there...i think you`ll be surprised

Carla; I still hope to get down your way sometime this year depending upon many variables, some of which are addressed here. When the government announced last spring that the La Niņa was over I wondered if there would be a normal morel season in my more Northern research areas. Then they began predicting that we were going in to an El Niņo which would mean less than normal moisture in my area and I had been entertaining hopes of a higher than usual fire morel crop due to past performance in areas which had burned the previous season, some areas of the NW and left-coast did fairly well but others produced hand-fulls instead of bucket-fulls. ..... location-location-location as they say in the sales vernacular. ..... Now I hear that we are entering into another La Niņa and thus I would imaging that it may be a repeat of the same period with the last La Niņa concerning the mushroom crop. Over all it could mean higher stream flow levels which are good for increasing mushroom size in some patches but conversely these sudden changes may be counter-productive. It also dampens the gold recovery in some areas, yet as it increases the water resources in areas which often dry-up by late summer it can be a benefit or hindrance depending upon the perspective of one involved. If we really are entering another La Niņa period then folks foraging in the high country ought to prepare for earlier than usual pass closures.

...hey forest harvest, it is good to see that your dry spell is over and the pine, lobster etc are pumping. I do not get that residual rain like you do when a hurricane passes along the right-coast and thus it is still dry as an old bone here. However that makes it better for chasing the gold in some areas so at least there is a beneficial trade-off for me. My pine patches ought to flush this week with the warm-up that is coming. Sometime last spring they said that the La Niņa was over and we were going in to a El Niņo which made me think that my area fire morel crop would be quite good... but instead it was horrible and we apparently slipped back into another La Niņa, whew.

mushroomeddie, Regarding the mushrooms in Kitwanga. I wish i could be more helpful ,but I only pick the odd chance I get. The Kitwanga area varies quite a bit depending on which direction you go and how far. I have a couple of good producing areas. But you have to catch them at the right time. I checked both out in the last week. I found tons of flags and very few buttons. Being that I have a bum knee and can,t pack much weight I never bothered with the flags. Hopefully someone will chime in about other areas and the the second flush that usually happens.

Hey old man, sorry for taking so long on a reply.first of all I got your 12baskets and got them off to the buyers with the rest of mine, made some good cash man.thanks for the offer of 50% but that would'nt be fare of me to do that,so there for we'll take care of that when we meet up.now for the week past,I was doing good and all of a sudden everything slowed right down man what a bummer that was.next day I decided to do some exploring and you'll never believe me but I got lost, and lost I was.that was the freakiest experience I've ever had,but I eventully found my way back the next day at about 4 in the afternoon.man I'm not ashamed to say that I got scared.Anyways my excursion paid off because I have found a nice big,and I mean big patch.yes I do mean pine buddy.there just starting to push,a few are showing and there's slot of bumps.I wish you were here to see it.We haven't seen a patch like this in years.I get excited just thinking of it.When are you gona get some time off? Another week or less and it's pine on man.I'm gona take some time off until there ripe so get in touch with me at usual cafe joint.I'll drive there once a day around noon.until then bud.its getting late so I'm gona head to the shack and get some needed rest.talk again soon I hope.

Actually the douglas fir( psudogoga menzesi ) is more closely related to western hemlock than the pine (pinus). Doug fir is not a true fir (abies). The Island has white pine, shore/lodgpole pine, hem, fir, etc. Matsi likes what the loggers like. If you know what that is. Check the price of raw logs and you'll figure out where they grow. Too bad, most of the good ground on the island is very hard to access at best. There is lots of dink poles within reach but they don't produce near as well. Most of the best ground has been logged out and will be soon. Many of my patches (even secret ones) are not a secret to the logging companies. I see ribbons on trees that Ive been picking under for 20 years. I have cut down millions of trees myself but I cant stand seeing good mush patches fall to there knees. There will always be somewhere to go but its getting thinned out fast. Find lots of spots cause they wont all last.

The chanties in Tofino are light and dry, hardly worth the pick as few buyers want much to do with them at the moment - but that will all change in a week or so with these rains finally. Bill and Trudy are buying in Campbell River just north of the Gold River junction on the left hand side, but I'm not sure if they're open just yet. And Shantyman, please do go on a patrol or two - let me know when your northern ground comes in because mine is always around the same time - I'll email you some detailed directions to help get you into some of the sneakier zones too if you like. Tell PlanterSon he is always welcome too. Have plenty of room here now also if he needs a place to crash. I'll be back in Qualicum in a few weeks.

Hi Shantyman...working like a dawg for a while yet...looks like my timing might be good though as the rains are just coming now...hope to wrap up in two weeks here in Campbell River which should put me right on top of the pine crop...tons of new ground to explore again this year...one of the side benefits of working in the forest industry for sure...and yes I have a gate key or two Zed if you want to take a wander out Gold River way. As for the Cranberry Shantyman, as much as I love it up there, and you know how much I do, I can't really justify the trip unless I know it will be fruitful - my priorities have changed dramatically in the last few years with a 6 and 7 year old in the mix. I miss you and your family though - you were always very good to me. But I'm sure we will meet up again in the future - I intend to take the kids up one day to show them what is surely some of the most beautiful country anywhere on earth.

I emailed one of the buyers on this website and he replied he wants chanterelles for $13/kg for 40kg lots and he pays shipping. one sec... calculator... that's $5.90/lb. I wonder what regular buyers are paying?

Hi Rick, I can't speak for everyone but I have not seen any except for the fluke one that came in around the end of July. But that 1 pine grows in his yard every year around the same time, which is odd because everything else is feeling late this year.

JD g-lll, Thanks for the kind words. We receive price info. and contact buyers to try and post the best available numbers which are averaged and do reflect decimal pricing. I welcome all real time pricing info. so feel free to update with the numbers you are getting. Buyers are welcome to name themselves, post their locations and prices and I'll be happy to post but I have not as of yet been asked to post a buyer by name or location. We do have a number of private buyers looking on a daily basis and you can connect with them on our "public market" page. We have a number of private buyers in Van. Alberta, Ont. & Sask. especially that are looking. Full buckets...... ;-0

FYI, sometimes the company will pay you more when u go into their shop because there is no commission or transporting cost to deal with, never 22 a piund but sometimes it is a little better. Most companies will not buy from their location if they have a buyer stationed close by. :-)

matsutake2011., Great looking site. Very professional. I see on one web page (hXXp://www.matsutake2011.com/Pickers-Page.html?entry=matsutake-mushroom-professional-pickers-forum#comments) you have a scrolling banner of prices. Do you name your buyers anywhere ? I have never seen prices that were not whole numbers. Is it worth the bother to have to screw with change?

Hi Lucky, that might just work out depending on when it is done. When the broker is just letting the buyer stay open to "keep his buy" and the prices suck, no way! But later on when they are all fighting for the right price to keep the pickers coming in, then is the time to sell as a group! Some mushrooms the brokers don't want in small quantities because then they cannot be shipped by the bulk pricing :-)

lucky logger...lol...what a dreamer. Everyone stick together?...what a pipe dream. The guys you are selling your shrooms to, "DO NOT" have any say in what the price is, they follow orders like every other buyer and have to put up with the wrath of all the pickers who figure they deserve more cause they pick more...what a load of crap. When the price is low they get their commissions cut, so they are struggling just like you. As far as getting people to stick together....rofl...good luck with that...don`t bet your last dollar on it cause then you "will" lose your last buck. The only way it can possibly work is if EVERYONE stops picking till the price goes up, and we all know that ain`t going to happen. So...things will never change

Former Fungus Finder, Yes, we recently created the "Public Market Page" as an alternative for pickers and buyers to meet directly. There is a buy/ask link where you can enter delivery options, price, weight, special circumstances. For long distance shipments we can act as an escrow to insure buyer satisfaction and seller quality. We can do exactly at you suggest and post directly for sellers/buyers and let you make all the arrangements. We don't really have any interest in getting too logistically involved but are happy to assist with advertising and networking. Right now we have buyers on hold and the warm temps. are not helping. But for example we have some private interest coming out of Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Sask. that keep hitting the site looking and asking. If you're better positioned to fill their order please feel free to post, sell and deliver as I'll be happy to network it through the site as an alternative for anyone interested. Cheers!

good call lucky ,if you could get 4 pickers on same page its a miracle lol. my partner and i control our own destiny. we dont do as well as phantom but we do get $12 across the board for clean mushys. as for buyers they prey on newbies promise you anything and give you nothing. mabey some of us older pickers should start posting stories of how wewent brokeon picks instead of how we made $30,000.ive picked for a lot of years and i still havnt seen that. but i have gone home broke lots. buyers have changed . they want to change grades and all .whats a 2? last year i nearlly fell over they dumped my mushrooms on a table in a pile before they grade GOOFS . also one buyer phoned ui peple on us (he sent us letter i still have it) hope i see him again.lmao was right if we dont sell til late they will raise price, they have orders that must be filled .then you got guys picking on other pickers because they havnt spent time creating thier own markets, we pick for 2days sell the third . it works . wish we had some this year very dry here.no rain for rest of month. full buckets all. stay safe

Good rant, "LMAO". I suspect a lot of pickers agree with you. I wonder if it would make a difference if each evening the pickers sold as a group: highest bidder takes all. I don't mean pickers sharing the money with each other, I just mean combining their bargaining power, a united front presented to buyers. "Look here, buyers. Us 5 or 10 or 30 or 100 pickers are ALL going to line up and sell to the ONE buyer who gives us $40/lb, or failing that, to the buyer who pays $2 more than the rest. Let the bidding commence..... now!"

FYI you sound like gerry the buyer, or mabey your pissed at those two fellas that have made thier own market. No excuse. why lie to pickers about how great thigs are. tell them how you went broke 2 years in a row or how your station burned down because you cant speak the truth.RD hasbeen phoning pickers down south saying big bucks mushrooms are everywhere. they get there and starve,or make gas and food money.buyers get commision for poundage. 200 pickers 2lbs each he makes his money, picker gets his share $15 . who is smiling now. buyers blame cartel, used to be we never sold a shroom until 10 at nite that way any orders to be filled had to be paid for. now they open in afternoon close at 7 because thier ordersfilled cheap.oh ya its too late for them they work so hard of course.picker sleeps in tent gets up at daylite gets back at 4 and the buyers closed because he has all he needs but will buy them cheap if you want. SCUMBAGS. sorry for the rant. ooops forgot about the emperors 6 birthdays , powerful man he sets the prices. buyers grow some balls step up and be liked. kudos to the boys doing thier own thing keep it up. pick on

www.matsutake2011.com i glanced at your website, is there a part where buyers/customers can say "Wanted: 100lb pine mushrooms/day. $30/lb delivered to Vancouver" or "6lbs pine mushrooms available, first $100 takes it" etc etc. I couldn't find the part where it gives me, the picker, more choices. Maybe the website is so new that it hasn't filled up yet.

Might make the trek if some money is to be had. Still remember most of my patches, if they havent been logged. Shantyman, For scale testing it is best to have something that weighs close to the amounts that you are actually weighing in. Scales can be balanced at low weights and way off at high weights, for instance don't use potatoes because they shrink like mushrooms do but instead use a sack of flour. I would suggest a 10 pounder and a 20 pounder. That way you can see what the scale does at an actual weight close to the basket of mushrooms. :-)

Zoo prices wed were 10ish. There were 3 stations. Found one guy who bought "special #1s" for $11 if you didn't mind his slow grading and cutting half of them or his scales that were not level. He seemed to get a bit nervous when I questioned the fact but it worked out alright as he "bought the basket" five times by mistake. This made up for any questions I might have had about how legit it was : ) On that note it is a good idea to have something like a leatherman tool or knife which you know the exact weight of to test the scales if you have any questions about the buying station. ...save this for the fly-by-night operators or ones you are not familiar with. A good buyer that you know well and trust is worth their weight in receipts and you could leave your 'shrooms with them and come back for your money once you have finished dinner. YES I miss Carl up in the Zoo and am grateful for many years of good times and honest dealings including chats in the patch. B&S you have my business for now but don't close down and leave me to these clowns like you did wed again. The pineapple express rains have hit with overnight temp at 12c...could be bad for fleas etc stay tuned but stay home for now.

I picked a couple times in Cranberry about 10 years ago, so I vaguely know what I'm looking for, but my question is: is there anywhere near Vancouver where you can find pines? I'm not looking for commercial picking, I just want to grab a handful for dinner (bought some 2 years ago at a local Japanese grocer for like 9 bucks each). I don't wanna know where your patch is, I just want to know if I should even bother looking.

Femme Fun-gal, we heard that Trudy passed away about 4 years ago, and my old man said he thought he saw Bill in his usual spot. Our usual buyer in Kitwancool (Dale'e mushroom depot) was closed and he told us to go to Shirly by the post office. But we did not sell in Kitwanga so we do not exactly know who is buying there.

I wanted to post this as an update. We got in a few chanterelles and with the weather the way it has been the quality and volumes just are not there for it to make sense to start our station up now. We are going to hold off opening our station until after we get a good ground soaking rain. Hopefully after a good rain the volumes and quality will be there for this season.

Hey Lucky, Thx for the positive vibe. Alternatives drive solutions in my opinion. This talk about stomping button......wtf..... I ever saw someone in the bush kickin' Matsis.......there'd be some kickin' going on. That said, we have plenty of interested buyers from everywhere hit the site. Commercial to just household who are interested in buying a sweet 10 lb./100lb. pack of fresh harvest. You got 'em....put up a price let's see if we can connect and sell 'em? I'm okey with changing the market.

Some things never change, there is an eternal need for some people to belly-ache and snivel about prices. I guess that's good in a way, we all need something to count on for laughs. Yeah, you stompers go out there and destroy all the mushrooms you can. That is really proving a point. Have a real good time doing your thing, and don't think twice about the havoc you are wreaking. Maybe while you are there you can kick up a bunch of moss too, anything at all to destroy the natural world.

Way to go www.matsutake2011.com! This is what's needed: a market with options. Competition will lead to prices that reflect value. I picked Hwy. 16&37 for 8 years but now live in Campbell River, and sadly thought my pine hunting days were over but the guys at work tell me pines grow on the Island!! So now I need to figure out what type of timber they grow in here. The Interior had no fir trees, and here there are no pine trees. So I have to learn all over :). I don't want to pick someone else's patch, I just need to discover what type of ground they grow in and I'll find my own patches. I'm a logger so I travel a lot on back roads.

you will have something to bitch about this weekend! Watch the price drop to 7 on saturday and 5 next week. They sure know how to play it. And yes they will still get the volume and save/make a few grand. Dont keep them tomorrow thinking price will be higher saturday! Wont happen!

Hate the cartels, kicking mushrooms, 30% price drops. Yikes! If you don't like Yakuza market prices well........create a new market. We have buyers from D.C. to Dubai. Our "Public Market" page just went active and if you have "block sell orders" post them. 5 lbs. to 500! Right now there are multiple buyers from Vancouver to Vienna. You want a fair market prices....here it is.

"shantyman" 13 to 9 dollars a pound drop ? The last time I sold in Kitwanga it was only nine and that was on August 20th. I wonder why the huge difference in a thirty mile area. You don't usually see that much of a drop unless there is a Japan holiday.

Just got back last night to find prices dropped from 13 to $9 at Rons in Hazelton. West is slowly coming on for a FALL start , looking for the monsoons and the highlands are at the very earliest of stages. Get your Nisga'a permit it may be worth while as it looks like they will be successfully keeping the non-permited pickers out this time...several patrols. The valley bottoms are in full bloom and still pumping them out. 70 baskets at one station for the end of August is not bad! The Zoo is getting a bit bigger...B&S buying? yes there are a few now.
