Hey, Cowlitz Girl, Take me to your candy shop, I'll show you my big matsi pop! Trees require mushrooms to live. Ectomycorrhizial mushrooms grow with trees. Saprophytic mushrooms grow on dead trees. Parasitic mushrooms grow on live trees (ummmm, Fistulina!). Drive on any road that is not a freeway. Find enough trees together to make a contiguous ecosystem. Get out of car. Search woods. Find mushrooms. Remember what kind of mushrooms you found in what kind of ecosystems. Don't post here every spot you find them.

Hey Cowlitz girl, yes, the woods along 4 are ok. Look for a mixture of firs, and hardwood trees, with oregon grape, ferns and salal growing underneath. The woods near longbeach, and quite a few spots along hwy4. You can always drive up past woodland on the lewis river road also. Good luck! And full buckets!

The Ranger Station that was in Packwood is now something like a Real Estate office and the closest RS in that area to obtain permits is the one on the east side of Randle near the mill. Good luck.

you go to a gifford pinchot forest service ranger station. Look it up on the web. They are open mon thru friday only. There is one in packwood, one in amboy and one in vancouver. Those are the closest ones to us. The commercial permits run around $100 I believe, there are a couple of different ones. If you want to pick for just yourself, and not sell, the personal use permits are free. But you still have to get one. Any other questions, and you can email me.

The DNR doesn't issue any mushroom permits, but the Forest Service does, in some National Forests.

Slimpickins, thanks for the tip.The young laptop wizard that seems to be here everytime i come here showed me how to do this earlier,I think he lives here? He also showed me how to google, pretty cool.then he thought I'd be intrigued to see google earth and, intrigued I was,so much so when he focused down to the rooftop of the building that I then turned my laptop facing the window then went outside looked up and waved at my self,I look at the screen and, nothing thinking maybe it takes a minute or two so again look up and wave again nothing but happen to notice the young fellow with tears on his face from laughing so hard waving me in he then clues me in "well" I have never ever felt so small, stupid, and embarrassed in my life but I still have to laugh everytime I think of it. From now on questions first. On another note picking is slow because of tail bone, and it is a long ways,it makes it for a double D, start at dusk and by the time it'said done it's dusk so all in all I still do ok, but just a little slower. Going home for thanksgiving, so until next time.

Hi, everyone. Does anyone have any suggestions for where to find chantrelles in Cowlitz County. Looked over on Mt. Brynion and in the woods, but found none. Would the woods off of Hwy. 4 going towards Long Beach be better?

Marin, thanks for the compliment. I have set chokers and cut timber for many a year until I got bit and had to get stitched up but I don't have Phantom Pickers proclaimed experience. He writes a bit like you have at times in the past but with more imagination. I truly enjoy his writing of experiences in the bush, so I doubt that he is you except like you he has made his long posts on the Buyer & Picker Messages board. If this phantom is you then you are more full of katunga than in the past, but it does make for an entertaining read. I agree that his posting name of Phantom was similar to Phantom Writer who has not posted here in a while. But there again I am not so sure because that one doesn't make as many spelling errors and some of the words he uses do not match the Phantom Picker's style which I feel is a more like yours. However when reviewing the boards I didn't see any resent past postings from August either so I feel that he may be in the bush picking and grinning. Therefore if he isn't August or myself or Phantom Writer and if he isn't you and he isn't _ or a myriad of other posters on Mastsiman then I would just accept him as being what he says he is, a self-proclaimed successful matsutake bush picker with possibly many more years experience in several industries than some of us have but with a special talent in capturing folks attention through his writing style.

Phantom Picker, this is the board that I used to like using for posting my information because then very few complain about it unless they are going to complain about anyone just to see their stuff in writing. I also enjoyed your writing and thus it has brought me out of the doldrums of not writing on this site, sometimes there is some immature imbecilic trash talking of a negative vibe but mostly it is good fun. This board has been for bull of whatever type and I believe I read once that matsiman may have created it specifically to move the bull about Alice & the Rabbit etc from the Buyer & Picker Message board. I haven't posted anywhere for about a year, as Slim as it may seem, but I agree with matsigurl that the pickings are quite slim. I even had to bake my signature stuffed peppers without any chopped up chanterelles this past weekend. All that I have left are a few sliced & dried kings and some morels. I guess it is time to hit the old tried but true October patches, that are a ways to drive.

Matsiman; I just returned from my most productive week ever at the placer mine however the gold is larger than expected so that there are no fines to try your machine on. I filed my annual assessment with the county and BLM and made extra copies of everything to share with a person who was wishing to present the property to someone he knows who might purchase it, the person got sidetracked and never showed up as promised. It is just as well that he didn't show up because now I realize that the mines value is much more than previously estimated and thus the selling price will also expediently increase.

Lobo, I don't get gold fever either. You are right, gold does change people. The machine is for finish work only. It is designed to run material from devices such as the blue bowl, gold genie or a shaker table. Not for any type of bank run. Later, Matsiman

Matsiman; I have been to the mine four times this summer but health challenges have prevented me from working it myself. I am supposed to be getting 50% of all gold recovered by the person working it currently and with pending sale that would drop to 10%. However I must trust the persons involved and thus far have received 0%, gold does things to peoples minds and then the fever can set in. I do not believe that I have ever had "Gold Fever" however I do get 'mushroom fever' which is why I stopped mining and have since spent so many years researching morels and other gourmet fungi. I still wish to see your box in action and hopefully I will have some concentrates this fall to test with. Is it capable of having bank-run material shoveled or pumped into it?

'A' I finally got the new computer up and running and now I can relax doing some fire research for next year. I've been having web withdrawals with nothing to post on. It has been a rough summer with chasing all over to research burn sites that produced the poorest morel crop that I have ever seen. .................. .................... Matsiman; I didn't get into the gold like I had wished so I currently have no concentrates to test on your machine. I have a potential mine buyer testing the gravels, so if the claims sell I may never personally get more yellow metal from there, perhaps a percentage depending on finalization of paperwork.

TK, I am in the Central Rocky Mountains and the only profiling here is where the porcini are hiding. It looks somewhat like you have a chip hanging off your shoulder and desire to twist most everything the lobo says arround to create disharmony. He has bent over basckward to help me and others on discussion boards in the past and I for one thank him for his kindness. ITK; I am in agreement with you and run into the same story wherever I have done research, some persons feel that the rules only apply to outsiders. I have spent as much as $600.00 in one year for picking permits yet never turned a profit, my desire is to learn as much as possible about where and how fire morels and other gourmet mushroom propagate but I have lost my motivation for helping others learn how to find the fire morels that I research most due to how I have seen my information abused with little or no thanks for sharing. ………………. The friends & family reference was not directed towards any particular locals but groups such as TK seemed to be indicating. I recently heard it mentioned that someone who uses the ITK name here may also be the partner to TK, could you verify if this is true? Are you the same ITK whom I helped with a lengthy private Email containing some of my fire morel research a few years ago and then at the end of the season that person posting as ITK bragged on this site of all the money made from the burn site area I had shared lengthy information on; yet that ITK never even bothered to thank me for the help. It was following the bragging and dollar amount posted here that caused me to stop helping anonymous harvesters on mushroom boards. ………………. Buyers have told me of friends & family groups harvesting matsutake in NorCal and then the one who has a permit will drive the matsi up to Crescent Junction, Chemault etc depending upon price. It happens with morels, porcini or any mushroom that can be sold to the highest paying buyer. Other groups will always purchase permits for each person, I have seen husband and wife teams who will always purchase permits and others who never do, I certainly am not the conscience for what others choose to do but do advocate that if it is a rule of law then it is easier to sleep better if in compliance, at least this is true in my own life. I also will pass the word along if I hear that someone might be targeted by the law … isn’t profiling unlawful???

Lobo, per your statement about families and friends picking w out permits in the pinchot. Yup happens all the time, and the way we see it is like this.....thats our back yard. we arent just out picking, but hunting, fishing, cutting wood, camping, working etc. Youre there "researching", go ahead and get a permit, but those of us that actually live on and feel a direct connection to that land, well we dont really feel the need to give the feds money.....just sayin/

I am impressed, it seems as though we are on the same page in several respects, I also have purchased permits at the same Ranger Station in Randle over the past 15 or so years ans sometimes at Trout Lake when I am researching in the Gifford Pinchot. The non-compliant pickers do seem to involve the larger friends & family groups West of the Cascade Range in Washington State. Most anywhere there is a well established law enforcement presence the visible compliance rate seems to rise. The further inland areas I research often do not offer any type of permit and others only personal use. I would compare them somewhat to the Naches District which mostly looked the other way and did not wish to be bothered with permits even though they were still required if you got caught with more than three gallons or selling what you picked. From information I heard volunteered from a forest worker in Naches on my last research foray they are planning or are currently doing an environmental impact study for the district due to what they learned about current mushroom activity at that symposium in Yakima. I am afraid that what they heard at the symposium woke-up the local powers of the district that might have otherwise let things stay the same. Over the past several years Montana and Idaho have at times restricted or removed commercial picking in many areas or required the mushrooms to be cut in half lengthwise so they might not be sold. Did you ever noticed how many cut-lengthwise morels were sold on Ebay following the cut-lengthwise-rules... that is 'way-too-funny.

I want to say from the start that I don't have anything against law enforcement officers, my grandpa was the cop in the old an new town of North Bonniville when I was a teenager going to school in Stevenson. I always had great respect for him and all of the Sheriff's in Skamania County, how could it be otherwise, everybody knew everybody else! lol I've said this to let you know that I too follow the rules of law and the golden rule! I've been roaming from Stevenson to Troutlake to Couger to Randle and Packwood for almost forty years and every time I get there I feel like I'm at home. I've helped plenty of people out of a jam in my travels out there, engine problems, flat tires, lost, ect. I always treat people the way I would like them to treat me, I firmly beleave that what goes around comes around! Every season people try to get away without a commercial permit, for me it's just not worth the trouble I could get into, plus all the time, gas money, loss of mushrooms, to risk it. You can see the ones that don't have a permit, they have a friend sell for them. What really gets to me is there are several groups of mexicans, the same ones every year, that pick together in groups of four and more, and only one of them has a permit so they can sell! I guess what bothers me the most about it is that they are good pickers, make plenty of money, yet just will not buy more than one permit! Come to Randle and watch! Having said this, It's not my place to turn them or anyone else into the law! Thats not my style, anyway enough rambleing for now, full buckets!

Marin; sometimes I feel that the governments mushroom permit policies are discriminatory against people who believe like me. I have nothing against those who do not like to purchase permits or choose to disobey established rules or policies for I believe that we all must choose our own path. What irks me about permit policies is that because I was raised to believe in honoring, obeying and sustaining the laws of the land I thus feel obligated to obey. I cannot recall even one friend who will purchase a permit unless ‘Big Brother’ is right there to pounce… Even though I do not feel it is right to require a paid commercial permit I still must of myself be obedient to the rules and thus it is discriminatory for me to be required to purchase the permit …. My logic may seem flawed to some but if I desire to sleep well then I personally must do as is required by whatever established rule-of-law that I might be aware of. When I hear some Law-Man or Forest Ranger say that they are trying to catch one of my friends I naturally feel obligated to warn my neighbor that I heard they are looking for someone in particular. The most recent was the one who said they wished to catch someone who’s last name sounded like a month of the year. Now I do not know anyone with such a name but I do know of a first name that might apply, thus my words of warning and of how to rectify the possible challenge involved. If the person’s phone was working then I could do it in a non-public way. I also realize that even though my wife might feel that it is OK to fudge the speed laws or roll-thru-stops … it is something I just can not consciously do of myself.

'A'; My computer has been down for the past few weeks and I have been on the road chasing gold and morels in Idaho. The wife met me in Idaho two weeks ago and we went down to Arizona for several days to place everything still there into storage and then put her home up for sale, got back to Washington yesterday and tried calling you again but still got the interupt and left another message. I'm using her computer while she is at work. .................. information.... Picked a few fresh wild strawberies yesterday, lots of green ones in that patch but no porcini or yellows showing yet, you must be getting your yellows at a lower elevation. I was going to stop at the old Crow and see if the alleged crack pipe was still there in the weeds but people were sitting on chairs, camped at that location. Stopped in at the Ranger Station and they told me of a speaker who came over the mountains for a mushroom symposium, was that the one you told me about that was going to be in July? ........fyi, a forest employee person there at the station who had been at the symposium told me that a young boy was bragging of all the mushrooms that he and his dad pick and sell and that his dad doesn't need a permit & has a name that sounds like a month of the year. .... & that they haven't caught him yet with his unlawfully picked mushrooms but will be watching. ......................................... For others reading this, I advise as always that everyone purchase a permit if they plan to give away mushrooms or sell what they obtain or if they wish to pick more than the legally allowed personal volume. Even if a particular district does not curently sell commercial permits that does not preclude the need follow curent Forest regulations requiring the purchase one at the Supervisors Office or other location in that forest if we desire to do more than personal use. Full Buckets to all, have a safe and prosperous mushroom year.

CleElumGrl and Mr D the man. Just like to say we had fun and enjoyed having the two of you down for the day. Now let me know when you have some time to go with us to hunt yellows as they are now up and have started as of the July 2ed and now with all the rain they should have some size to them. I have been to fifteen patch's and still have five to look at and so fare there all are showing strong signs of a bump crop year. With all the rain that has been dumping on them and the temp's being cool in the 70's in the day and med 40's at night, I well be picking by the end of this week. I do hope you two well be out looking at your patch's as soon as you can. Kelly and Doug, you two as well should be looking around your Lake Yellow rock Two Twin Sisters. I have a new Phone coming some time this week and I well still have the same number so try calling me before you go out this weekend and maybe we can meet up some where!. Golden Lobo, I would like to see you as well and if timing is right with the other's, all six and a half of us can meet up and pick the old patch's and look for "NEW ONE'S" and I know where to look!!. Tell next time "Buckit'stoyou.

Im only going to post this once. I have nvr givin Chris M permission to use any of my work ie: photos or written storries in a book for him to make money from. I did give him permission to use my work on his website to promote wild mushrooms as that benifits us all. I have helped him out of a spot in a past and nvr recieved a thank you or kiss my ass in return. That hurt. Chris if you read this I want you to either remove my work from your book or pay me some cash and percentage of sales from the book, along with credit for all work. I will hold you to task on this issue.... kingmorel aka Randy Marchand

seasonisanonstarter and others posting info about Chris. I have heard this is the only place his endeavors are posted. I believe as you do, there should be a place to post and read complaints. I only want it done in an appropriate manner. Chris has a family, wife and kids, they don't need to read some of the posts here. His wife is divorcing him. Would you like your children to read some of the deleted posts, if you were the one discussed? Keep posting about Chris, but keep it clean. Later, Matsiman

Chris matherly of the morel mushroom hunting club is already internationally known. He is known internationally as a carpetbagger. If his future victims, I mean clients, want to search they will find this story. If he keeps plagerizing and infringing on copyrights, I am sure that it won't be long before he steals from someone with the means to be sure everyone knows the REAL Chris. Catching him in the woods may be kinda fun for a while but I think that pulling his pants down in the media would be much more rewarding (sorry for THAT image). To those that have been injured by Chris's dissemination of copyrighted and plagerized materials, PUBLISHERS have insurance for that and are responsible to make sure that it does not happen. Sue the publisher, collect their cash, enjoin them from making any further copies and make them pay twice the amount for each copy sold or hunt down and buy back all the copies. You get restitution and Chris Matherly returns to the world of anonymous scabs. If Chris self-published the book, jointly and severally sue Chris and the distributors. Sue Chris, tie up his money and he will stay home and probably try to come up with some other way to take advantage of people. As you can see by his posts, Chris is a taker, not a team player. NEVER give Chris the benefit of the doubt as he has proven that he is out to stake a claim on any info he can find. I am not a lawyer and you should talk to one. If you are not willing to do that, then you don't really have much of anything to complain about. Andy, if you take this board down, the one that benefits is Chris since the records of his expoits will no longer be in the public record. Not too much else to say about this topic.

Golden Lobo, Its been too long, haven't chatted in awhile. When is a good time to call? Been having some nice chats with August and did find a few a couple weeks ago, but not enough to fill the pantry for the year. Schools out in a week and a half and I'll be heading back with the whole family. Hopefully there will still be some left. Daddy in Wa

I hope this doesn't seem negative but people being made fun of for their lack of education doesn't seem to be in order. One should always be proud of a honest job well done to the best of their abilities. Levena chose to use her degree stripping. All of this bad mouthing just because your girlfriend lied and said I took your 1 pound of mushrooms, you are paranoid. We are already a success and will be nationally known by the end of the year. You are just jealous and sad because you are the one that *ucked up last year and was late on the first day, everyone waiting on you and then skipped out early because you were too lazy to go and get your gear together, then never called or showed up for the next two days. It was certainly all you buddy. We did nothing wrong. You messed up big time now you are trying to bad mouth us just to make yourself look better. Who would want to go on a foray with you? You are nobody. Shut the hell up and get a life. Stop bad mouthing Levena, she is very intellegent and has a bachelors degree in English.

In response to the recent washington "foray" activity. Bring it on! I saw and heard you everywhere you went this weekend! Those whistles really gave you away. No matter they made it easier to blast past you and to less molested turf. Jokes on you, scouring those skidder tracks, when the gems were actually all over. Hidden in their more "natural" environment... not to mention their cute blonde cousins! Does paying to have someone serve you a home cooked meal mean you made it?

If I find that any of my photographs are published in a second run of Chris Matherly's book on morels then he broke his written promise and thus already knows to expect prosecution for copyright violation.

kingmorel; Thank You for your kind words, did you view my wolf-mix Charlie's photographs in the gold section of my web site; http://morel-doctor.com/ I sure miss Charlie and have never met a K-9 since then that I felt I could love & trust like I did him. Now previous to him I did trust my Police Patrol German Shepard that was my almost daily companion for two years at Torrejon Air Base in Spain many years ago. As for Chris, he did request that I co-author a book on fire morels with him and perhaps some other people he has made contact with, I thought that perhaps you were one he was expecting to help write the book, I told him I was not interested. He promised to leave my photographs out of his next book but I had the impression that he did not know who owned the copyright on all of the photos used in the first book and if I recall correctly he said in an Email that he had only used two of my photos even though I saw more than that published in the book. I still forgive Chris and even liked him when we met at August's place but I just have a bad feeling of trusting him in any business endeavors.

I personally cannot add worth a darn, but I just visited http://www.weather.com and clicked on Nowata Country Club Nowata, Oklahoma where they show that the low on February 10th was -28 & high on the 17th was +82 degrees F. But Nowanta city shows a low of -22 on the 10th & high of 80 F on the same two days. Yahoo news showed the low as -31 and high of +79. Whatever it actually was, I am hankering for warmer weather here to bring on the molly-moochers.

Just walking the the frozen ground is bad enuff and Helicopters flying over head and the bud's are in bloom,I think I would leave tombstone town before they find the frozen buds and let them push the warm air south across the state line, and now for the local weather: payed for by Lobe's.... Woa! What did I start with that Priest Lake comment?!? FYI, we're talking about a general area that covers hundreds of square miles, not some secret spot. It's like saying "I found matsi's on North Vancouver Island."

easternWA; from a phone conversation with Dave in NEPA last year, I understood that ganoderma gave up the site and there is a new site with most of the old folks and stuff that is operated by Mushroom Mary. .... I have not been to it because she used to threaten me with being banned from the Oregon Myco site whenever I would post truth about my fire morel growth research that did not jive with erroneous established thinking or if I complained about all the foul language posted by those that already knew-it-all. ......... Thus I can not say how it is but I am reasonably certain that several posters on this site might be able to help you, or ask at the Oregon Myco site of which I also do not post at.

Does anyone know what happened to the mushroomhunting.org discussion board? It was run by a FL guy who called himself "ganoderma." I get an "under construction" message when I try to go there. Mushroom Mary and Morel Doctor (Lone Lobo) used to post there sometimes and I think I've seen them pop up around here too, so maybe one of them knows? I hope ganoderma is ok.

Hey, Cowlitz Girl, Just because the mushrooms were not in the trees when you visited three weeks ago, does not mean they are not there now. You have to be there on the schedule of the mushroom, not on your schedule. Weyerhaeuser Corp. ground is off limits to all collecting and they have been actively pursuing mushroom collectors.
