Pickinpox, the Oden Road burn is not fully out of the snow yet, the lower reaches are on private ground and the higher elevations are mostly State Land. They are logging it all as fast as possible and it may or may not be a good pick

Morels are popping in Cle Elum, more verpa's than trues but they are there. I saw a group of people with huge bags. We spent several hours out and all found morels. Going back next week. I'd like to get two days in instead of part of one. Not taking to many people with me might help!

CleElumGrl; Sorry, it did not do that to me, I didn't even notice sound....but then my old lap-top does not have much sound anyway. I believe that the Jones family he comes from was from just down the road and around the corner from where I was raised. Both of our families had 10 or more children, which was common back then and he was of the age of some of my elder siblings. ....... It was common knowledge among those of us working or living in the area of Elvis to leave that elk alone and that he often would walk down the mountain just in time to shed his rack in that same driveway. ....... The elk dropping their antlers in the same area or spot each year can depend upon spring weather, 'horn hunters' tend to rely upon visiting the known locations each spring and often watch from a distance with binoculars to see if a particular elk has dropped one or more sides.

Lone Lobo; should of warned me about elk whisperer web site on opening it. The music blared so loud I jumped out of my seat. LOL. I would not of thought they would drop in the same spot every year? Even if thats true, everyone in the area is scavenging for them. Going back to read about Elvis the elk:)

Hey Bill in Blaine; thanks for the update. Probably will be about the time I can go hiking again. So many obligations in the past couple months. The longest we've ever been away from our cabin. Can't wait to go morel and shed hunting. It has been two years since I found my 6 point elk shed! Once you find one like that you expect to be lucky again and uh no that doesn't happen. Happened on it though by going to the exact spot where I found a patch of morels the year previous. My husband said no, lets not go down there, theres still snow. I said oh no, I am going and he waited. I started yelling and he thought I found morels ;) No morels yet, but the antler sat right over the spot.

CleElumGrl; I came north a wee bit too soon this year and possibly should have stayed in SoCal iffin I wished to collect MORELISH FUNGI. ........ Attended a funeral yesterday and memorial today at the OMAK Long House of confederated Tribes. ........ I do not expect many morels here for a couple or more weeks but we are making progress with a large mushroom grow room. ........ The logging outfits are taking as many trees as they can from the burn up Loup Loup Creek and I am not holding my breath for much of a fire morel crop there this year. ......... I would venture that over on your side of the mountains is the best bet for awhile yet.

Steve; listen to the 'A' expert, if morels were ready to flush prior to the snow or if snow fell on morels then often an area will melt around the morels and you can hunt them by looking for holes. It is awesome to look down into such a hole and see a fresh morel growing.

Steve; I always like seeing the heavy snow because the penning morels and mycilia are insulated. The snow often thaws with warmer temperatures than previous and thus the underground morels may be undamaged. When we get a hard spring freeze on bare ground the season may be over and done for that elevation. .... as with any postulation based upon experience there will be detractors...

My trilliums are up so the Morels at least below 1500 feet above sea level and below should be ready. We have had crazy weather so? I'm a little worried about the high elevation mushrooms we had 60=70 degree weather for a few weeks now they Mountians are getting hammered with snow not sure what to think.

The snow level here is down low but the line is staying just above town. I am bringing the links from my response to 'A's message board & forum thread to here because I feel that everyone ought to know of the dangers in eating mushrooms from old orchards and cemeteries where arsenic may have been used in the past. ................... Being as mushrooms absorb toxins from the soil I figure this is a good time to remind about arsenic and other things. http://www.fungimag.com/winter-2010-articles/shavit-morels.pdf http://www.springerlink.com/content/ddypdaq3ft7vtykg/ ...orchards can be bad for contaminants, however this orchard was planted in an area that had never been toxified and only organics are used to spray.
