SNIPER, I AM ALSO IN SW WASH. MY GIRLFRIEND AND I WALKED 5 MILES INTO A PATCH AND FOUND NOTHING. DOWN BY THE VANCOUVER LAKE. BUT THE MOMMA UNIT FOUND HER FIRST MORELS AT FRENCHMENS BAR 4 WEEKS AGO. SO I AM STILL SCRATCHING MY HEAD!?!?!?! THE WIERD WEATHER THIS YEAR HAS DONE A NUMBER ON THE LOWER MORELS HERE IN TOWN. BUT THEN ON ANOTHER NOTE, ONE OF OUR EMPLOYEES FOUND 2 LARGE MORELS IN THE GRAVEL OF OUR SHOP BY THE AIRPORT DOWNTOWN. AND 3 IN THE BARKDUST AT EVERGREEN HIGH SCHOOL. SO, MY RULE OF THUMB IS TO LOOK EVERYWHERE THIS TIME OF YEAR.

I'm going to be looking in the lowlands for now. I looked at your pics. Those were nice. Did you get those low or high? I heard cottonwood stands along the rivers are pretty good. Is that true? I sometimes wonder if i'm getting good advice or just being steered away from the hot spots.

sundanzkidd; report I got on Saturday was $20.00 per pound in Keno and only about 120 lbs were sold to the lone buyer on Friday. But that is all sure to change soon. Joe Daugherty was paying $21.00, he possibly has his info on the buyers page on this site.

Nice find dude, its still a bit early for blondes, maybe another couple weeks, for some reason in the area we are at now, it is pretty common to find multiple clumps with 16 being the biggest single clumpi have found so far, with doubles, tripples and quads being pretty common, and if you only find a single, that is all you will find, or there may be dozens in a small carpeted area

Yo Fellow Pickers: Bit of a 'hit' for the Island as Logging is slowing down radically. We have had one of the coldest winters ever with good snow Mid April. Will be an interesting year and has Potential to compete with "Bumper Crop" years of 1996 and 2004. I think things will start early... maybe Chanterelles in July and Matsi coming in Late Aug. Would be nice. As well, in the event you like Bears, it would be a good ting to contact Wildlife Management and voice your concerns, Bears are dissapearing at an alarming rate on Vancouver Island as tourist killing is still allowed, however Poachers are taking thier toll. Most of Europe and Britian do not have Bears.... Vancouver Island is headed that way as well unless killing can be stopped. Luck, Cougar

Well there Junebug I don't work and I'am retired and If ever one think's the same then they've got you right where they won't you to be and taking from your family the money you work so hard for. Don't take me wrong but deep down inside of you your mad at them just like alot of us are. The time has come to stand up for all the small people like you and I or just let them keep digging deeper and deeper into your pocket. how much more can we take?, The rich get richer and the poor become poorer. I need to eat and so dose my son, yes I to have kid's and it is getting harder and harder to feed them on what I get from S.S.D. Everthing is going up and pay has not gone up but it has gone down.

I think most of us have to work. So we have little time to take it to the streets. Think of your family and work hard for them. They deserve it. Taking time off from work will not do you good and you know that. Unless you are not working. Then take it to the streets....

What a deal $4.50 a gallon.

US gallon is the same as 4 liters . In canada where I am we are paying $1.30 a liter . So that works out to $ 5.20 a US gallon...

But I agree, way to much .

From what I understand about $35-$40 of the price of a barrel of oil is simply because of speculation. And who are the biggest speculators in the world. Why the very people that CAN afford to pay the high prices at the pumps. They should have some guilt..... What about the 10 of millions of people around the world, that are in the position of not being able to buy food even though it is available. These millions are above those millions who already have no hope. The fuse on that stick of dynamite has been lit and it is getting really short.... just pray none of them have a nuclear device..... There goes BJ on another rant. shut-up Joe......

Sundanzkidd, they've been finding morels now in the Sierra for a few weeks now at one particular burn, but then I just read this interesting report and now I'm not so enthusiastic...... "Larry S. and myself invested in a fairly extensive evaluation of our CA morel season and yet again the california "amorel syndrome" seems to have raised its head. Although I have limited experience finding morels (started after the legendary '73 Cherry Lake burns), we both agreed that pre-drought conditions have made the Central Sierra dry out, while temps have finally hovered above 30 F. Generous swaths of cut and dig promotes fruiting if wet; I would say the same with any burns.

Alas, dry as dust with no Geopyxis, large cups, orange peels, etc. Absolutely dust and devoid of fungi at many promising locations. I hope this is wrong.".......anyway, the morels are coming on in Oregon now so it won't be too much longer RIGHT?????

Thanks for the pack info. I have some researching to do. I did pick up one with a foldable shelf but now looking at it, it makes me wonder truly how much it could hold without breaking off the screws in the frame.

Wow almost 200 bucks for a frame! That is a nice one, but gee i'd have to bring a bike lock with me and find a tree to lock it to when I was picking haha

My next question is where can I pick up some of the larger sized baskets? I have about ten of the smaller white (5lb?) baskets, but the source I got those from is gone. I'd really like to get about a dozen of the larger ones but I'm not having luck finding them.

I've searched for plastic baskets and lychee baskets and litchee baskets and I can't find what I have nor what I'm looking for. Where do you get the things?

Shobi.... here is another link Google "Tatonka Lastenkraxe"

http://forums.outdoors-magazine.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=8591

With the addition of some cordage, it is very easy to carry 4 standard "one hole" baskets. It would be easy to modify the base so that you could carry 8 baskets. all that would be required, is to make a larger platform. Well you ,if you get one, will see the possibilities this frame pack has. You will quickly see how poorly engineered the other type packs with the fold down shelf are. This is a superior pack and should last for years. I payed about $200 canadian for the frame. and about $80 for the bag that attaches to it. ** I have never used the bag. So depending how you plan to use it... Maybe save yourself some money by buying the bag at a later date, if you need it. If you want some more info emaile me. boletus (at) telus (dot) net

This is what you are looking for...this is the BMW of frame packs, if you get one, keep a close eye on it, I had one of mine stolen. They are a bit pricey... but worth every dollar. ..and the most comfortable pack you will ever put on....

Shobi, I generaly have luck hunting garage sales and used stores for older back-packs. Not sure any brand name, but most packs made 20plus years ago have external frames...

Looking for info on what brand and where to get a frame pack with bottom shelf?

The ones I've found so far all seem to have some straps supporting the bottom shelf which don't allow baskets to fit.

sundanzkidd; I agree with you as long as the surplus cost does not exceed the lighter weight tipi-tent. So often anymore surplus places charge an arm & leg because of supply or just the novelty of an Army tent which attracts many. .... The excess weight would concern me as well as storage space and the long drying time needed for a canvass tent to keep it from molding in storage.

id go with the army surplus tent and a small wood cook stove and cot, to keep the snow snakes off me.......... I ran out of pickeled herring (vita brand) in a wine sauce, so last night i crushed one dried morel, one dried chanterell and 2 dried slices of matsi into small bite size bits and sank them in the jar of brine over night -- wow i taste tested them.... the matsi was great, the morel was good and the chanty was ok in the medley,,,,,,, now im real itchy for more pickeled herring with wild mushrooms

tipi tent; It looks much like a verson of the military tents that were used in the Korea Conflict era and you could purchase them at military surplus stores in various sizes. I know of a family that lived in a large one of similar type but with walls while they built their new home in Oregon. .... They were built of heavy canvas and bulky to set up but very strong during storms due to the many guy-line attachments. These tents look to be built of a much lighter material but of similar design to the military ones. .... If you are setting up a base camp for mushrooms where you desire to have a warm refuge then this type of tent may be more sturdy in storms than other tent types but with an open fire inside you can expect to eat lots of smoke.

Treeguy - I've been wondering that myself. The 2007 forestry service fire report wasn't posted online yet last time I looked. And of course they had to reorganize the website to make it impossible to find. I might wind up hunting in some 2006 burns to see if anything turns up.

ITK, Yeah Pete seems to pretty on top things I got pretty good vibes from him and Paul as well as the other guides seems like a tight knit group. we are going out agian this weekend. With the snow pack we have looks like it could be a great spring/summer rafting season. On the other hand i'm not sure how all this snow will fair for morels will it be a late/non existing season. Sundanzkid, They did a bunch of logging up by my Chantrelle patch last fall in a few weeks if I find time I might do a little morel hunting up there. Last year I found some verpas and a whole lot of false morels in the area.

Sundanzkidd, Last weekend I did som guide training on the upper clackamas with an outfit called blue sky rafting ( I know pay to play but I will be the one getting paid). I had a blast but it nothing like a kayak the boat was 15' with 9 of us first time guiding a boat that big I definatly need more practice. I am also evaluating my time I really like the idea but I may be streaching myself thin so many day to day issues already burning my wick on both ends. The owners name is Pete have you heard of this outfit? Sounds like an awsome tile job. Good mushroom luck to all! Steve

That seems to happen to me every year and each summer I cut back on research miles but the cost keeps rising. If I had gone south for the winter I would be in those burns hunting nuggets and morels right now.

Lone Lobo. You are correct. Still alot of snow in northern NM as well. Actually i got up into a canyon yesterday that is a known producer and the ground is still VERY cold, even on south slopes. Thought of hitting the Jemez but the cost of driving is so high that spending $$$ for gas on research is most likely putting me in the negative. Ill just wait like everyone else!

ITK; Have you considered checking the Southern California burns? The one near Lake Henshaw stretches from near San Diego, north to the Riverside/San Diego County line and includes much of the Palomar State Park and the AguaTibia Wilderness, according to my map this ought to be mixed conifer in the upper areas and good for morels right now. I wish I could go down and check it out myself, I would appreciate a report if you do go. Reports on landscape morels in the City of San Diego started coming in in February so the burn sites ought to have a few conica. .... .... The next one I would desire to visit is in the San Bernardino National Forest west of Big Bear Lake and extends through Green Valley towards Lake Arrowhead. There is another little one that is only a few square miles on the other side of Lake Arrowhead. I have my doubts that the hills that burned down through Malibu would produce fire morels. .... .... The Castaic Lake Recreation area burns and up around Bouquet Reservoir might be good about now also.

Well, found someone to set things up. Will be changing servers again this week hopefully. The server I switched to is garbage. Won't give any help with Front Page, and can't get all mail or send any. Tiered of messing with them. The new set up is spendy though. $950.00!!! To set up and first year, 2 domains. Two are needed to have a registered site. $300.00 a year after that. I have most the funds, thanks to donations. I'll foot the rest. Anything to stop spam and porn posts. Later, Matsiman

Next 30 day's are going to be nice still some Rain but I do believe as fare as the snow well that should stay up high. It's been sunny and cool but by the weekend it going to be in the mid 70's and dry at lest here around Yakima. I still see some rain around the end of next week but it should stay warm and the rain up in the mountain's. I should be picking fire burns in med May are the frist of June. Good luck to you all that still have alot of snow.;( I well not have to go fare to find them and not have to spend that much for gas and I'll be home ever night with a warm bed and a hot meal with a hot shower.

ITK; You might do better for morels in NM or AZ. ... With more than 400 inches total snow fall on the morels patches this winter it will be a while in Central Idaho. Snow predicted in the valley tomorrow but up to 70's by Saturday. .... .... The Old Farmer sez precip 1 1/2 inches above average in the Sierras for a total of about 2" in April and that could make for a lot of snow. .... norcal and Southern Oregon 4 inches of above average precip with about one inch below average on up towards BC. .... .... Intermountain West for April, 1/2 inch above average precip.

yes be great white water all summer in the nw, i saw many controlled burns going on between the snow pax all around tahoe, i stayed for 5 days at the silver legacy in reno and they had a fire convention there where all the tax dollars paid for blm, fs and other agencies to work play n stay at the casino, all their rides had 6 floors of the parking garage sucked up - i had issues and questions about the week long meeting there.

Ive been looking at some burns up in NE cali and even the low elevations (read 4500'asl) are still buried. Im a kayaker too, so i follow snowpak/runoff info pretty closely and this is about the latest start to meltoff in years. Yeah yeah its only April, but i digress....

I try to avoid those places and save my pennies, I got hooked on slots for a bit in Korea in 1973. I won a big pot one day and sat there feeding it all back into the slots, that cured me. I looked my self in the mirror and said, "self, that's enough of that nonsense". I never did get hooked on any of the games.

Actually, even though we are behind last year and the year before, it's not because things are late this year, but because they were early the last two years. I had knee surgery on the 23rd of April last year and I actually mowed my lawn before I went to the hospital. That's just unheard of for my part of Montana and at my elevation. (4600') The grass is only just trying to turn green here and nothing is blooming yet. We are more like a normal year here and I think you've all forgotten what normal is, since we don't seem to be having anything like normal lately......I never found morels in WA state before the 15th of April and that was on the western side of the Cascades south of Seattle. On the eastern side of the Cascades I never found morels before the last week in April to first week in May. Then at the higher elevations (over 4,000) it was more like second week to third week in May as the snow melted so you could drive up the logging roads. Every year people try to push this earlier and earlier and it's just not going to be that way... especially this year since it was a la Nina winter which for the Pacific NW means colder and wetter than usual. That's just how it's been here. It just won't warm up... nights are still very cold.

It looks like my patchs are going to be why late still have two foot of snow on the grown. ZiQuinn... Like I said early this year it well be late even my penny patch well be late, it should be on some time around the 19th but not this year.I have been picking there for ten years and it going to be four weeks late for the frist time. The past years we have been in the low 70's but this year its in the low 50's.

But it would taste so much better with some fresh shrooms.... Looks like it will be very slim picking this year in B. C. Lots of steep ground to boot... ZiQuinn.......thanks for the kind words about our country. I too don't have any bad feelings for our neighbors. Our countries have much in common , and yet differ in many ways. I think people are people and governments are governments! we may not always agree with the actions that our politicians take, but can't blame it on the people. When I was a child I often thought how it would be with no border, but now that I'm older I realize what a pipe dream that was.lol. we are two unique countries rich in our own history and wouldn't want it any other way. I feel blessed to be a CANADIAN as well as having the U.S.A. to be our neighbors. now I wish the shroomin would start so we can all chat about the pop!!

w0w, my computer was down for 24 hours and look at all the trafic. ... Back in 1971 I sent off for information on homesteading in BC to see if it was a viable option at the time to VietNam. .... Yes I did literaly kiss the ground when I returned from three years of oversea service for my country. .... I decided that obedience to my obligation to the laws of my country was more important than moving north. .... I have learned over the years that true freedom comes from obedience to the laws of God and whatever country one chooses to live in. .... I may not agree with some actions that others in my government make but I have the freedom to help create positive change. .... I feel that it is often the daily simple things that create freedom. .... As a simple example watch how many folks roll through stop signs or fail to stop at rail road crossings when required. ....The habit creates in the mind the possibility of no longer recognizing danger and thus one day the person goes through a sign or light and smashes into someone else or a train pushes them down the tracks etc. .... .... It is the same mental process that create thieft, murder, littering, drug dealing etc. as we mentally harden ourselves to the little things we do and justify our actions we then teach poor principles to our offspring and intolerance for others in our own minds. .... .... I believe that freedom and enlightenment comes from positive actions and obedience, our behavior shows others what type of person we are inside.

Your O.K. Ricco, it is hard to remember that sometimes. A negative attitude is a sign of a person that has suffered a much. Unlike you, my experiences and friends from Canada are my most dear. Most of my time was in B.C. from Prince George down to Vancouver. Never in that time did I ever have a bad word with anyone about anything. I love Canada and I wince when I see trouble cross our borders. Buck up me lad, you have the ability to solve all your problems. After all, you always have haven't you??? Don

Other news, the new server is garbage. All the things they said they could do, they can't. So, I'll be switching to my old server. Costs a little more, but thanks to donators, I have the funds. I have contacted someone who can set up a registered site. Board will not change, but you'll need to register. At least that's the plan. Entering the numbers on the photo is working. Three days of porn posts stopped this morning, or maybe they just didn't show up last night. Monday is the day I'll try to have the new system working. Later, Matsiman

Found a short but interesting article on sciencedirect.com. It follows in quotes. Discuss. "Mushroom picking does not impair future harvests – results of a long-term study in Switzerland Simon Eglia, , , Martina Petera, Christoph Buserb, Werner Stahelb and François Ayera aResearch Department Landscape, Swiss Federal Research Institute WSL, Zuercherstrasse 111, CH-8903 Birmensdorf, Switzerland bDepartment of Mathematics, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, CH-8092 Zurich, Switzerland Received 10 August 2005; revised 27 October 2005; accepted 31 October 2005. Available online 5 December 2005. Abstract Forest fungi not only have important functions within the forest ecosystem, but picking their fruit bodies is also a popular past time, as well as a source of income in many developing and developed countries. The expansion of commercial harvesting in many parts of the world has led to widespread concern about overharvesting and possible damage to fungal resources. In 1975, we started a field research project to investigate the effects of mushroom picking on fruit body occurrence. The three treatments applied were the harvesting techniques picking and cutting, and the concomitant trampling of the forest floor. The results reveal that, contrary to expectations, long-term and systematic harvesting reduces neither the future yields of fruit bodies nor the species richness of wild forest fungi, irrespective of whether the harvesting technique was picking or cutting. Forest floor trampling does, however, reduce fruit body numbers, but our data show no evidence that trampling damaged the soil mycelia in the studied time period. "

Ill be heading back to the NW from NM soon and was looking at that Inyo complex between Sequia and Kings canyon. I think its probably i bit further south then many of you work so if you have any beta itd be much appreciated. You can email me if you want to keep it on the down low.

I'm sorry you fill the way you do but don't blame all Americans. I don't know why you fill the way you do but you do have a right to your express yourself but you need to direct it to those that make are laws. I would also say you have your freedom and rights just as we do and if we lose those rights then freeodm is lost forever. I to don't like some laws but I must live with them and I well stand up to those that would come here to take it away from us and would help you as well.

There is no truth to the polo bears dieing, all they won't to do is get the Fish&Wildlife to come down here and tell us that are camp fire smoke is killing the polo bears up north. Why should I believe that the Earth is really warming up when it was the coldest in years and the snow es also.why should I believe Al Gore? after they said in a report that the bears have been coming back 700% in the last 40 years and there is no truth to the Oceans well rise 20 feet.It all comes down to Oil! they just don't won't us to drill for oil.Now they won't to place new laws to say that we must only drive so many miles a year just to clean the air. What if you or I could only drive 30 miles a week how fare well that go before it really happens and how long well we let them do this to us.What I am saying is very true and we need to make a stand to not let are rights as Americans be taken away!

Well,Today I wok up to 5 inch's of snow and it drop as low of 18 over night I don't thank we well have many cherry's are other soft fruit because of the freeze temp's overnight and if there was any morel's pop up they would be morel ice pop's. I have heard that the buyer's down south are paying five dollar's a lb for morel's and that the price well stay there for some because of the price of gas and other thing's and that a report on the news said that the restaurant's are not doing as well because people are cutting back on going out to eat and there price's are going up...................................Lobo, I see that has drop as low as$30+ today!
