Hi SONYA, the baskets are usually bought in bulk from oversea's somewhere. The problem is that a whole container has to be bought at once (A ships container) and that adds up to mid 6 digits... Good Luck!

Hi everybody, it was me who called from New Zealand. Now I'm in Dubai for a few days, then I head to Mozambique to witness the birth of a mulatto child ( I think it was me) and then I head to Canada, early to mid June. Just don't know where I should fly into. I picked morel in 2005 in the Yukon and I'd love to do it again this summer, I'd go anywhere in B.C or the Yukon. With the high gas prices and for saving time it would be good to know where are some of the burns located that are expected to produce a decent crop, where buyers most likely will be found. I need to buy the right ticket soon before it becomes too expensive. So I will really appreciate any information, just can't wait to get straight into it. Though I'm a passionate apple picker I found that mushrooms are even better, in fact, the best thing I've ever done. So please, if someone could help me, here my e-mail address ponguino@hotmail.com (ponguin is the ancient name before they converted into penguins) Thanks so much Frank

Response to sundanzkidd .It seems that the snow pack is still there however it was a number that you can call for information to check with the U.S. Forest Service at 503-630-6861 as when or if they are going to plow or let it melt down I don't know much about it ,it maybe worth a call before you drive up there,I dont know if i am posting twice, need to get use to do it.

Where is 'the right place' to look for/find these baskets?

Part of our harvest was destined to be shipped somewhat locally. We've used the small 3k baskets in the past and just included a small charge for them since it was a real pain to get them back.

We went to buy another hundred or so from the buyer and that's when we were told that he was out and wasn't having luck locating them. He claimed the places he had previously bought 1,000units at a time from were out and they were the ones that mentioned the factory burning down.

Sorry not Mike from cow

Hi Mike. Baskets can be bought from some local buyers depending on how many they have. They are really not necessary for pickers to have them (they are nice though...) the mushrooms can be left in the bucket until you get to the buy station and then dumped into the buyers baskets. A shower cap fits nicely on the top of the bucket to keep out the crud... (we call them 5-k baskets or 3-k baskets depending on the size) Good luck! Carla

Hangtime, that ok! but for all other's you need to know that there are two types of Gyromitra, one is the(Esculenta) and the other (Gigas). Gigas cap is attached to stalk and stalk is whitish and short and fat as the cap where the Esculenta stalk is not nealy as wild as the cap. Gigas is good to eat and popular and the Esculenta is not recommended.

JDS. . Some people call them brain mushroon but there not. Gyromitra escalunta is the brain mushroom that people talk about and it is not recommended. the one that loon lobo show's in he's blog's is call Gyromitra gigas and is Edible and Popular also know as Bull Nose are Walnut or Snow Bank Fasle Mushroom. If you have David Arora's book look it up page 234 and 236, if not buy yourself one call "All that the rain promises and more". People need to get this one right are you could eat the wrong one!!!!!!!. That's all I have to say.

Lone Lobo...Thanks for posting that blog about snowbank false morels. Are those the mushrooms commonly called "brain mushrooms"? I've read that they can be toxic to some people, even those that have eaten them for a long time might suddenly become sick from eating them. Any truth to that? A friend of mine who lives in Central Idaho says everybody in his town eats them and they don't sick!

chickenof the woods; I do not know how to reply yet from the blog and am in a hurry to go on a scouting foray to the north. .... August was not the buyer that got took, it was an Oregon friend that lost his shirt on the deal however August was the one who got the initial call. .... as for Jack there was no one there on Monday, the lower end of the burn is dried out deep and even new buck brush leaves are shriveled up like in a drought. .... the center of the burn is out of the snow and ought to be flushing in micro-climes. ... I found 7 naturals on the east slope of Hood but snow is blocking access to my main patches there.

w0w, I leave for a few days and now I see three discussion boards. ..... An interesting thing happened this past weekend and any buyers who have been contacted to have someone ship morels to them really ought to look at the photos and information that I just posted into a new blog....... if these people ship fire morels in a month or so when they come on or matsutake this fall as they plan to do ... then you may expect to receive dirty product until this person and what he calls his 80 Mexican crew get educated on how to pick and care for mushrooms. http://mushroompicking.blogspot.com/

morels can certainly be found around moist cottonwood stands (rivers, ponds, etc...) but also search near any disturbed soils sites. with expences on the rise, know the value of your product. commercially- find your own market or create one. again, know the value of the product. peace
