Today is just about my last day to finish the last of my peach chantey patch's before the snow fly's. I have three more patch's to clean up before the weekend comes around. It's been really nice to have been picking for three and a half month's and still see no end to them but must stop soon to allow the wildlife to eat what is lift and to re-spore for the years to come. This has been one of the best year's over the eleven years I have been picking over on the Yakima side of the mounten's. Now it's time to start looking for new patch's for next year and before the snow starts to cover the ground. August

Well went into the woods around the arrow lakes. It was an awesome day. Took our three chocolate labs and had a great day. Found a few ones but most were old and flagged out. Stopped at a campsite and built a fire for a couple of hours while the labs played. Never sold the mushrooms, but truly had an awesome day... I think they are done in this part of the woods..probably going to dry some and teach our new chocolate lab puppy how to find mushrooms... good luck to all and have awesome times in the woods......

The pines are slow but steady in the Randle area, but there is alot of competition with the Asian's. I was really surprised and pleased to see you and Sadie there in Randle! later, Marin

Yeah, OOTBB, same here in the Qualicum area...pines are pretty scarce...and most of the ones that are out are wormy. I totally agree with you August, but I have a sneaky feeling that we are in for a good flush soon - I base that on the quantity of fresh Russula (a multitude of species) that are just starting to come. Buttons everywhere, (especially reds and purples...not going to even take a stab at their names...just know that I see them in conjunction with pines always) If we do not get too much snow in the next little while (it has covered the mountain tops already) then I am pretty sure we will have a pop. If not, there seems to be no end to the chanties - here on the island anyway. Good luck folks. CD

pines still coming here.not many pickers, some getting full packs, average 20/25lbs. was at 20bucks no hard feelings in nass.good to here it`s slow as that means no t much for the cartel. slow recovery, heavy botton`s.five buyers in the nass.three cartel and 2 indepents.hope more indepents get involed next season too.make it tougher on the cartels.it`ll bring the prices up for the pickers.by the sounds of things you guys down south aren`t going to have much of a season .snow is creeping down slowly. how nice

Lets stop and look back at this last winter's snowy season that left ton's and ton's of snow that stayed around most of the summer and did not malt off early and allow the ground to warm up untell late August are early Sept. Most of the west side of the Cascades have been late and also had the most snow fall over the winter. The berry's were late as well as the mushroom and even the plants an flowers as well as the tree's. I had found that many tree's at and above 3000 feet had light green tip bud's in Oct when they should of been dark green in July at 3000 feet and higher and I also found more mushrooms below 3000 ft sooner then they should have been. What I would like to ask you all is to ask yourself's, If this was true where you pick as well. Andy has said that he has not seen a bad year like this in fifteen years in his study patch's and I could go as fare as to say it is because of all that snow last winter and ground never really getting to warm up like it should of. If I was to point my finger to the late melt down and a very slow warm up then I would place all my money where my mouth is and would be right!.

not sure on that one at all cranberrydawg ..... suspect they should come back but all would depend on how close the logging was and how it would effect the mini ecosystem around there.... like more exposure to sun etc..... if that happens i think it could be the end..... unfortunately... gl on that one.... still picking a few here .... flagging now .... 8 lbs of ones today ... clean up.... 20 for them

Hi Zed, been busy with the kids a lot lately...haven't had much chance to get out lately. But definitely still want to go for a hike with you...perhaps next weekend. An interesting note on the Trestle Patch - as you are well aware it was logged by our friends Island Timberlands but I walked down into the cut block where the chantie beds used to be and of course there were none to be seen...BUT, all around the trestle itself was loaded as usual. Odd eh? Obviously they prefer their tree hosts but it is clear from this that will also cling to life in other ways - the conditions necessary for their survival were somehow being provided by the dead wood from the trestle or at least the earth surrounding it. Chalk one up for mother nature! That patch wasn't going to give up the ghost entirely, not without a fight anyway. It will be interesting to see if it comes back next year around the trestle also, or if this is perhaps its last hurrah. Any thoughts Zed? Matsiman? Kieth? King? August? Garf? Etc. Etc. ????? CD

To All. I sincerely apologize for my postings should they have offended anyone. I was only trying to reach a friend. But I will not stand for anyone who feels it is necessary to inject negative comments regarding others, espescially when they have not been invited into a conversation. Happy Harvesting to All.

Hi BC kid. I am always shocked at how the mushrooms look a few days after i buy them... I can imagine what they might look like after a trip overseas in a boat...I do hear that the boat is way better than the plane though. The plane has no cooler at all and the holding belly gets hot...yuck!

susie,

You are so right and the Mad Morel board was created by Andy the matsiman as a place to vent those types of things and discuss Alice and her rabbit etc...

For me the joy comes from being in nature where I can listen to all the sounds of birds, animals, water, wind, etc.

If I find unusual fungi to photograph or a few gourmet mushrooms to savor then I am a 'happy camper' for sure.

My children are grown and their mother always discouraged them from going with me to forage for fungi but my wolf hybrid never complained of sharing woodland experiences with me.

I highly recommend that anyone who has children to show them how much you love nature and to respect the wild lands that we have left. Perhaps our world will be a better place as a result.

Just a thought on this site is to focus on the mushrooms.. In our life we all have our problems.. If we could only live our lives for the good times, picking mushrooms, enjoying the fall smells and honestly be happy with ourselves, we wouldn't need to post the other stuff. Thank-you for the Nakusp number.. Always remember that picking mushrooms is only enriching our lives as is our dogs, children and everything we enjoy.. good luck to you alll.......

Hello all again, Was at the Supermarket in Nagoya, Japan a few days ago and came across some North American pines. They were asking 1580 yen for two or three number fours or fives. They looked like crap but were asking around twenty dollars for two four or fives. Probably those two mushrooms are worth a buck in Canada. Can't believe they are even shipping that kind of quality here. I don't think that is the way to get Japanese to like N.A mushrooms. Have to send the high quality. Anyhow, Just thought I would let you all know that a pound of number fours or fives are catching 30 to forty bucks a pound. That's right, number fours and fives catching that price. I would like to see the store that is selling the number ones and twos. Bye for now. BC Kid

Looks to me like "Someone" is a little upset that they've been scolded like a child for sticking their nose where it does not belong. Next time do not get involved in other peoples business. As to me just wanting my money back: Bugeye, If you are reading and laughing at this diatribe, please leave a message as to how we decided our personal business regarding any past debts would be handled and whether or not the posting I left really was about "The Money".

As for you "Someone", I have been very polite in my postings out of respect to the Board and others reading the messages within it, nor do I make it a practice of chastising those who need it, in or on, a public forum. My final message to you is: Have a Nice Day.....! Read into that what you wish.

"Someone". I dont see any ranting on my behalf, I was just trying to get ahold of a friend, which I did. You on the other hand got involved by posting the comments you made. Remember, you were the first to make disparinging comments and involved yourself in someone elses posting. I agree that there is a common trend on this board for others to get involved in postings that are not their business, or make comments out of hand. Maybe, just maybe, in the future others will think before they set their fingers in motion.

A safe day to all. Gerry L.

Yeah Bugeye was a drinker, but that was then and this is now. People do change. First, he never leeched from me, I extended the offer because he picked for me and came on a river trip that proved shroomless, along with Jan and Nate, Rick, Rex and Halfrod. The posting I left for Bugeye was not to be demeaning in any way, shape or form. Just a note to say hello in my own way. My apologies Bob if this caused you any grief.

As to the posting by"Someone", if you leave your real name in your statement while calling Bob a leech you may actually receive respect. As to the $150 he may owe you, why not just ask for it back instead of being.........

I hear Bob got his name because his eyes never went back into place after he found his first "Motherload" Ain't that right Bugeye.

Take care and safe harvesting to all, even you someone.

Gerry L.

just wanted to post a note about picking, buying and prices. Over the last 25 years i have sold to independants for "a little more" many times (usually a buck or two). It was always short term gain. The Company I have dealt with over the last 5 years has provided me and my working partners with solid backing and exceptional support. I am a harvester, but have also bought for the past 10 years. In this industry reputation and trust is everything, and working relationships are the key. Loyalty has its rewards, and that is the key to having a successful season. The company i work with is Ponderosa. My name is Rob. I harvest mushrooms, and I AM CANADIAN. ps- im heading to my old home town on monday.

I would say that the season is over in Washington and it was short if there were many out there to pick and most of the picker's that I know decided to not pick this year and I know more that well not return next year unless the price starts high. I walk in to four of my patches and I could of picked at lest twenty baskets of one's and two but not for the low price's, But I do have other sale's but small one's at that. Let the Elk and Deer have them!. Marry Christmas to them this year.

The price has gone from 6 to 10 to12 in the last week. Thats what I`m talking about...just a general feeling for me of what the price may do. I know what it takes to get somewhere to pick (with the price of fuel) and if i can see what the price has been doing then i can judge if its worth going or not. I know the price bounces around...i used to buy when buying was good, it sucks these days i know. Thats why i want to know how the price is moving cause i just pick now, no more buying for me.

Hi Pineking. I can truthfully swear that i really do not know if the price will go up or down on any given day. 2 weeks ago i was paying 4 for chanties and not getting very much at all, i was barely covering my gas each day. I get a call to go down to 2... You could have knocked me over with a feather, I was absolutely shocked. When i get a phone call for prices, i have to be really careful to say that as of right now the price is ___, because i never know when that call will come in and i have been quoting a higher or lower price all day on the phone....Either way is bad. If I quote low then the picker may not come in to me and if I quote high the picker will be mad when they get there... Buyer's have it pretty rough sometimes... We have to keep the pickers happy if we want to buy any mushrooms and we have to keep the broker happy if we want him to let us buy....

Well around here it has been dry. just got some rain today. Picked a few nice chickens the other day. Been doing a good bit of canning preparing for a rough winter both financially and weather wise. Started making my own meade, breads, cheese and flash freezing in season fruit thanks to king Morel for showing me the way! Oh and drying my own herbs. well best of luck to all you pine pickers. Would love some #1 but the shipping will kill me. Had hoped to go to Northern Ontario to pick my first ones but will have to wait and see. Hola King Morel and Qpines!

Zed you are right about the mushy part. A lot of them coming in this week after the rains are way too mushy for me to buy. It is strange how the firm ones are awesome in quality but how many are mushy that people pick. We are also paying $2.50/lb for yellow chanterelles at this point in time.

Cranberry Dawg I haven't posted in a while due wanting to wait until we opened for the remainder of the chanterelle season. We opened up again yesterday and will bang away at it until the end of it all this year. I will let you know about the pines. Right now we are buying yellow chanterelles for fresh markets.

I understand that Carla but the amount of info a picker can get is very limited.I live on Vancouver Island and i like to pick the Terrace area but it`s to hard to get the prices, and other info. If i know what the price was the day before and which way the price is going up or down, then i can make a decision to go or stay.

Pineking, i am not sure how many times i have said that posting prices on the net is only a bad idea because of the way prices change so quickly. trust me when i say that as a buyer i do indeed believe the pickers need to know the price so that they can decide whether they want to pick for that or not. The main reason that i do not post prices on the board is because they change too quickly for the information to stay accurate, You are more than welcome to call me for current prices on mushrooms at 541-269-2309.

Cranberrydawg, i have not been back to the chantrelle patch, i almost made it there on friday. however picking chantrelles near by i was disheartened as weeks ago i found crispy chantrelles, then with a little rain...mould...now with more rain and mild weather.... mushy... what the hell? do you (or anyone else on this board) know why the vancouver island chantrelles have been mushy for the last 3 years? i am getting about 20% out of my patches.... in years past it would be the other way around.. that coupled with the raping of the east coast by the 2 timber companies has my volume way down (20 lbs for 8hrs of hiking is great exersize but does not pay for gas). i know i am complaining but it feels good. there used to be a buyer in courtenay that bought other mushrooms - hedgehogs, sponges, lobster... i think his name was Gerry? is he still out there? cannery in nanaimo paying $2.5 lbs for chantrelles. they said 10 - 7 - ? for pines but not much coming.... later zed

The brokers don`t control what people post online...it doesn`t have to be the buyers who post but the pickers. We`re using the net for the wrong reasons, Info is what we need not bitching at each other for stupid reasons. The buyers are the ones that should post prices but if they won`t...then there is us...the pickers. The brokers DON`T have the power to stop that.

Mushroom prices for the other species are down too, I would suggest not picking Chanties in this area until you call your buyer and hear that the price is coming back up. Most of the pickers are not even making all of their gas money back at the moment :-(

Hi Matisman. In my area (Coastal Oregon) the best of the best Matsi pickers are only getting a small basket of non-wormie's. We have about 50% worm from what i can see...

Prices here in this area anywhere from 11-15 for #1's

rondadonda, Haven't heard anything and haven't been out to look.  This is our second cooling in CJ, so it's possible.  I'll try to get out and check early patches. We'll see.

I was at the study yesterday. First flush, if you can call it that, is mostly up. Worst year in 15 years of monitoring so far. Didn't see any new coming. Haven't counted it a bust yet cause there is another flush coming. Have to wait to see what happens. Should be starting to show this week.

Carla, Got enough rain to call it wet here. Got an order for a large quantity of the spore I collect so won't have much time to hunt matsi.

Later, Matsiman

Another 2 AM post...this insomnia is killing me - Kieth...there's a bit of a pop you know where...are you buying pines yet and if you are, do you have a price? I notice you haven't posted in a while, I'll phone you if don't see you here. And Cougar, it's a funny thing about those black bears on the island...you would think that with all the trees being decimated that it would open things up for more berries and the population would at least stabalize, but if what you are saying is that the black bear is becoming scarce, I would have to agree...I have been dawg slawging for months, doing one thing or another around Qualicum and have yet to see one - crazy! Usually see dozens by now. And, thanks Garf, I just read your post from a while ago and appreciate the comment - ty. CD

hey moe. just got in10 bucks up the nass.you see ,where ever the best produce is thats the best price.to get the pickers to areas that are producing top quility mushrooms. thats why such a change ,causes a good picker to follow the mushrooms route because they figure they can find lots.most can and will travel. it`s all a game, to get top produces for the martket over sea`s. pay you cheap and getting Max $$$$$$`s. p.s. rick work`s for the cartel, joe chung ,has for years.watch him ,another snake in grass. you`ll find out.. trying to gett some orders set up,will keep in touch.got your email..need a few days. hey i know your brothers.grew up with you all,see what i can do.

6,4,3,2,1 in Nakusp. Nothing but flags though. 50 lbx. of flags equals $50.00. Not worth the gas. Pineking, would be nice if prices were posted but you know brokers would never go for it.

This is a buyers and pickers sight and we all have the right to know prices and why not. Also we keep in the loop about quality and quantity which helps us decide whether to go out picking. Ricks is in Terrace beside the Northern Inn, good grader and is a fellow picker. I was loyal to Wendy's for 10yrs but she is now the same as the rest of the buyers so I thought I'd try someone new. Where is Tc's, he was the one place in Terrace that helped force the prices up in past years. I will keep posting what I can. Goodluck to all

The price is and has been around $6lb for 1pines for a few weeks in Terrace. It's not due to anything other than people will sell for that price. Oct is prime month for this area, the next two weeks should be great for excellent quality pines, and the price is likely to go down if anything. Then late in Oct when things get tougher and most pines open below the surface, the price will go up to try and keep people in the bush. Has happened every year in the Terrace area for the past 5 years, my crystal ball tells me it will happen again. $15lb around here when there are any Pines popping is a dream, or a vision from the past.

HEY ALL, STRIKE EH! hummm, that's going to be tough cuz most people need what money they can get. The only sulotion is to find different buyers by surfing the net and looking locally. I'm sure every town has an oriental joint. Everyone needs to communicate, if one starts looking and comes across some one interested in all the hard work you've done picking, they may tell you and you'll tell your friends and they'll tell their friends and soforth. Every one needs to work together =) So yeah, we'll be looking for potential buyers here in AB and if we do find them we will definitley share with everyone, heck maybe even set up a buying station. So yeah, we are determined to help the pickers that work so hard to get so little. We are going to be busy this winter with trying to find a market for you all. You all deserve to get what's fair =) So think and work hard to make it happen. CHEERS =)

Hey all, just wondering why when people ask prices the chances of a reply are next to none. Moe has a price up(Thanks Moe), but where is Ricks, im guessing Terrace? I guess if prices are posted that might create an actual interest in picking and no one wants that do they. I am starting to realize its every picker for himself out there now a days, no wonder strike would never work. One picker stops picking and the next just jumps into his patch and carries on. I know my opinion matters very little but anyone that knows me knows I would help a picker any way i can whether it be prices, areas to pick in or whatever. To all of you helpful people and I think you know who you are THANK YOU. The rest of you can rot like an old wormy shroom. Terry

selling mushrooms: try seeking your own market. just about anyone can pick an apple or mushroom. find some chefs and restaurants and work with them. pick local and sell local. more cash in your pocket and seek a FAIR price. fair trade means understanding the prices. prices are out there, just hop on the internet and search. selling for below value leads to awful business. then there's drying. sell, keep, or give away as a gift. Peace

Can anyone just image about 80 lbs. of pines and expect me to do something with them. Let's see he has been out picking on a beautiful October day and I have had to be at work. Thought I would be happy that he never sold them at this low price. Smart man....Hope the price is going up..

The person that August spoke of as setting up in Cougar is still down in Crescent.

It is still only if he gets a deal set up will he be at Cougar or elsewhere buying.

I tried calling the potential buyer in question last nite but his phone was turned off and he has not yet returned my message.

Well I was out scoping the patch today, seems I've missed out on lots. Still feel real new to finding matsi, couldn't believe all the spots I've been missing. Never picked a matsi until i moved to Salmon Arm 6 years ago. I know that they grow in Nakusp, my only real picking partner grew up there and he had all kind of tales of the glory days. Anyways it just rained here yesterday, how long should a new crop take to come in. The patches I was in today had very few buttons but lotsa flags. Seems to be a new flush of chanties and lobsters as well, is that any indication of a new matsi crop. Any tips would be a great help. Thanks folks. Terry

Yo fellow pickers: Looks to be an end to an Era. I really dug the trip over the past 20 years picking commerically most years. Best was 96' and again in 2004'. However this dang Bill30 by the Liberal Government and sell-out of the peoples land in the form of TFL's to Fee-Simple ownership, has shut me out of my patches. Gates are stying locked and even those with Mining claims can't get a key. I started this year at $12.00 for Yellow Chants and have held it there, have been offered $9.00 but won't budge. The COSTCO strores apparantly sell Chants for $10.95, however I have also heard $7.99, I never shop at COSTCO and never will. Anyhow, it waz real cool to meet real people in the patch, many had 'attitute' and were highly opinionated about the 'bush' and thier territory. We pickers are not unlike the Black Bears on Vancouver Island slowly going extinct. Luck, Health and Prosperity, Cougarman, signing off fer good. Thank you all.

Rj,a few days ago I had to ask Matsiman to remove a couple of negitive posts I made. Those posts were made out of anger.Since all anger is a result of hurt I have made the decision not to feel hurt by what the cartel is doing anymore.Unfortunately, there will always be people that will pick regardless of the price, and all the anger in the world won't change that. The only way to change it for yourself is to find your own market.Don't compromise your own integrity, instead try channeling all of your energy into taking control of your own destany.I have personally decieded to back away from the industry for now because I know that my anger (hurt) is clouding my vision. I also know that Matsiman has put a huge amount of work into this site and I don't think he intended it to be used as a beating board.Good luck rj. I think you have the energy to make positive changes for yourself.Remember...if you change the way you think about things...the things you think about will change.Good luck

Greetings All, Raining here in CJ. Not very cold though. This is the second cooling this fall. Will check in a couple days for matsi.

Got report from Crescent. Best pickers making less than 100 a day and spending 70 for gas. This was report from last Saturday. Pickers are saying worst season in years.

Later, Matsiman

Anyway...Thanks for keeping this industry dead.

Pssssst.......Moe, Do you know how much Wendy made off you guys for all that walking? Most likely not!
