Greetings All, Anybody interested in a Matsiman led Matsutake foray early November 2009? Location of foray, Cave Junction area, near Oregon Caves. I am thinking seriously about offering 10 people, at a time, a free Matsutake hunting day led by me. Sorry, ten is all I can handle at once. May conceder more days of ten if interest warrants. I'm just probing to see what interest is out there. I have stopped picking commercially. Will be 59 in July and too banged up to walk these mountains all day packing mushrooms. I think it's time to share my knowledge and experience first hand. Those interested can leave a message here, or email me. Email link on banner at top of every page. Thanks, Matsiman

JDS, Crescent and Chemult are 2 ranger districts, side by side, in the central Oregon Cascades. They contain the largest area of matsi in the US owned, almost entirely, by US government and managed by forest service. There really aren't many local pickers. Most come from California, and are of Asian decent. Last I heard 85% of permits issued to Asians.

As for the cutting, I was personally involved in 2004 in some of the preliminary work to locate matsi in the units for cutting. I also made reconditions based on our habitat studies at the Diamond Lake study site. In many cases I then consulted the picker who picked the area and asked if they agreed with my survey and recommendation. In every case they did agree.

Last I heard the 12 million board feet were coming from 12 thousand acre. That may have changed.

Later, Matsiman

There's a story on KGW.com today about the Forest Service plan to cut up to 12 million board feet of timber in the Crescent area...they know they will be cutting in prime Matsutake areas, so they went to California to talk to pickers. Aren't there any locals they could have talked to?

Being as morels in the US come on first in the south and move up the Latitudes as winter changes to spring, it is logical to assume that morels in Mexico could possibly flush sometime in November, December or January depending upon the year.

Morels have been documented as flushing in Texas during that time frame and Mexico is further down towards the Equator. Then depending upon elevation and moisture.... It certainly would be a worthy research adventure for someone with plenty of time and money.

South of the Equator the summer occurs during our winter and I have heard of fresh Argentina morels being shipped to the USA during our winter season.

Chad,

00ps, I neglected to sat that there have been reports published in the past of most gourmet mushrooms that we fine here being also found in Mexico.

I believe that there is information on this site about Matsutake in Mexico and I have picked up US Government publications at Oregon Coastal Forest Service offices many years back that showed matsutake growth areas in Mexico.

I would surmise that by looking at those areas on a map and then looking at past morel growth patterns in known US or Canadian areas in correlation to morel growth... anyway it might be possible to make a postulation as to what might occur.

I just did a google search and the 7th paragraph down on this site mentions Mexican Morels as well as morels from other countries.

Hey Joe D, good to see you here again.

Chad,

Morels were reported to have been researched in European burns, 'way back' and a researcher foraging in an Austrian burn site described what we now consider as the grey fire morel. China also exports to the same markets as we do.

I have read reports of fire morels as well as naturals producing south of the equator, particularly in Argentina and Chile if memory serves me correctly. Therefor I would surmise that most any country that has the proper conditions will produce morels in season.

Some years conica fire morels have been imported to the US and Europe from Pakistan or other countries that often have earlier seasons that produce high volume of morels which can cause our market outlets to be flooded and picker prices to drop to mid-season lows prior to volume of naturals and conica producing in Western USA.
