Yeah, I should of thought of that pete...I know lots of buyers just set up on the side of the road with no permit. HAY- has anyody heard about a flush of lobsters down near bandon? I think that would be really weird considering the heat wave going on and time of year also the whole place is in extreme severe drought.

Not really sure, but what I remember is you don't need a permit from FS, but you do need a permit from the county to buy. Matsiman

Correct me if Im wrong but I don't think you need a permit to buy mushrooms unless your buying them on national forest lands. A guy set up buying at a gas station don't need a permit from the forest service ,that don't even make no sense.

Lonnie; It appears that the forest sites mushroom server is down but normally there are five forests together on the permitted area including Chemult area. Deschutes, Fremont-Winema, Umpqua, and Willamette National Forests. Call the Chemult Ranger District at 541-365-7001.

conicalifornia, Thanks for the update. Your forecast may mean a good chance for a productive matsi season in Sothern Oregon and Northern California. Wet weather systems usually mean a cooling, then a warming after systems move through. Perfect conditions for matsi formation, depending on degree and length of warming after cooling. Matsiman

gonna be brief and short this time....historic climatology based patterns on track for our mid summer dry out however our first wave of monsoonal moisture is looking likely for the sierras, southern oregon, and intermountain west starting this friday (too bad everyone thrashed idaho burns and now the conservative backlashers have shut everything down; word of note-DO NOT LITTER IN BURNS!!!!).... Atmospheric wind anomolies in the northern hemisphere are still showing ramped up westerlies from suppressed trades or easterlies and the el nino is progressing extremely nicely suggesting once the days start to shorten in a month or so the jet stream should ramp up and really take aim at Vancouver island, northern oregon and washington in august and september and then oregon and northern california toward middle september. So bottomline is be patient and work through this window of heat and dryness and things should moisten up substantially soon pretty much everywhere. Cheers and happy pickings

Boletus Joe, The server has been down for almost a week. I can't even send email or receive email.

I'm not sure things are truly fixed. I have found a new server that should be better. Get this. they say they will help with formatting a registered board!!! Probably cost though. I've had a couple donations and sold 1 of my gold recovery machines. Should be able to handle the added expense.

I hope to have the new site ready next week. It will be the same address, just a new provider for the web space.

The site will be down when the transfer takes place. The DNS  (Domain Name Server) needs to direct my .com to the new server. Takes 24 to 48 hours for the new direct.

pg shroomer: Do you have Google Earth? If not you can download a free version. Very handy for picking, because you can get the KML files from the bcwildfire website, which is essentially an overlay of the fire perimeters right onto Google Earth. From there, you just hover your cursor over the area you want to get to, and in the bottom right corner Google Earth gives you the lats and longs. Just punch them into your GPS and you're golden!

Mikefungi.. Sure, you can bring any kind of vehicle down that road, but bring two full gas cans. It's 200km to the picking sites and then you'll still need some gas to drive around. The roads are in great shape, but expect a flat at some point. Lots of pointy loose gravel...

Bummer831; Sorry to hear that. I'm shocked but then not surprised either. They'd rather let the mushrooms rot in the ground and go without your spending on gas/food/cigarettes(?)/etc, than willingly let someone live without their oversight and fees. Legal is will masquerading as reason. Bah humbug. I can understand putting "Canadian jobs"(local pickers) first, but as long as there are more mushrooms than there are pickers let the Americans come pick our mushrooms like the Mexicans work America's farms.... also it's stretching the truth to call Americans "foreigners". Banned for a year for harming no man nor his property, and/or for telling the truth to government. shake my head. /rant end.lol I guess next time you say you're a tourist eh?

Looking for pickers to go on boat access only pick. We have a buyer on site. We had rain yeatersay and today and mushrooms popping everywhere. Looking for crews, we will take you into the fire, picking a grid off the lake shore and move camp every three or four days to eliminate the long walking. We have quads on site as well. Mushrooms picked up and transported daily to the buyer , cash and groceries brought back daily. This is a remote area and you won't have any pickers working next to you and be competing for ground. Top dollar paid, will provide radio communication between camps and crews. If your interested please text 7802360322 or respond by email to solutionpipeline@gmail.com. Large crews are ok. Huge area. I'll be checking messages etc multiple times a day .

Jared M; Never seen buyers there that I would trust. I shall attempt to get names right but my memory does not work the best since my stroke; used to sell to Murphy's on Vista, to a bistro on Bogus Basin Rd, a store/market on the same road, to the CoOp, Eagle City Market, various restaurants in Boise & Eagle, but my best areas to sell were in Hailey, Ketchum & Sun Valley. Just look presentable and don't bother chefs during meal preparation times. Restaurants change, chefs change but the love for morels stays the same. I still have my Meridian cell # but live down south in the Sonora Desert. Call if you want pointers 870 0243 I an available most of the time.

Morels are just starting to come on in marketable volume in central Washington State. The main flush may be in a couple weeks and as far away as one month in NWT this year. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=877330542306050&set=a.431522440220198.94715.100000873380585&type=1

Always be cautious when getting into something new, there is no way that harvest amounts can be predicted or how much competition you might have. Read back through the posts about limited burn site access in the NWT, they may be trying to discourage or they be accurate in their assessments. First off don't go unless you have the money to waste in case it does not work out. Every year pickers get stranded at areas they hoped would be their salvation, not only in Canada but in the US. From what has been posted about what has been happening in mid BC I would surmise it is too early in NWT, I would check burn sites closer to home first and if they do not have greys flushing yet then I would stay to the south until I knew how to forage in a burn site before putting the petrol dollars in the tank. If you wish I have 4 photo galleries that might help in finding fire morels, be sure to read the information above each fire morel, good luck. http://matsiman.com/md_web/morel_doctor_photo_gallery.htm

Hey, amateur picker here from Victoria BC. Heard this years harvest is going to be a large one. I was thinking of heading up to the NWT this week by myself to try making some picker friends and hopefully enough money to put myself through school this coming September. I'm willing to put in the work. Realistically is this something I could do? How hard is it to find a buyer? any other tips? Thank you all so much, I really appreciate it you have no idea.

Hey Lobo, I'd love to talk more about your mushroom delivery research if you have the time. Packaging ideas and affordable shipping thoughts would sure be appreciated! On a totally separate note, have you done any research on killing worms in the mushrooms? I often will pick oysters or kings or something the worms love and find that after a few days in the fridge, a perfectly good mushroom with maybe one tiny worm or so has had time to sufficiently riddle the whole thing with his little tunnels. Vacuum sealing for a short time maybe to suffocate them? Although that would be expensive and time consuming. I experimented with pines under a hot lamp to drive them out, but found that it took too long for the health of the mushrooms being warmed like that, and even then it wasn't 100% effective. I've also heard that heat will hatch the eggs laid on the mushroom, whereas keeping them cool might cause them not to hatch. I guess that makes sense, although I've never tested to see if that makes a difference. Anyways, if you feel like sending me an email: krumplez@hotmail.com

I can find good points in what both Austin & Ron have said and do not feel that either one was too negative, we have had such things pointed out to us several times in the past. Every area of mushroom sales is different depending upon location, whom one is selling to or many possibilities of different scenarios. I conducted extensive research on the viability of driving to markets, shipping via FedEx, UPS or Postal delivery. I found one consistent way of getting my morels delivered in health and in a timely manner for less, but the packaging is the key, but they do not spoil with up to 4 day delivery. Also a method that cost the most yet delivery was what you paid for, however lots of customers did not like the added costs for overnight or two day FedEx.

Ok Austin lets examine the issues you mentioned one at a time. 1. I'm not sure how you decided the picker needs to get three times the field buyer price to make the same money. Blanket statement of opinion? A guess? Everybody is different, has different customers, different prices, different expenses. We also got no benchmark of the field buyer price from you which makes a lot of difference. 2, When the picker sells he looses a day of picking. True enough IF your a one horse operation, but then who doesn't need a day off every so often and if you don't your not working hard enough! You dry them if you don't have customers lined up for them fresh and keep on truckin! Among small groups and crews one person delivers and the others continue to pick, they rotate who delivers and conside it their day off. 3. Mushrooms loose weight. Of course they do and for everyone including the field buyer unless they are dried immediately. But if deliveries are made promptly, within two days of harvest for example, the customer gets fresher product and less weight is lost. If the mushrooms are kept cold as they should be, very little weight is lost. The customer gets WAY fresher mushrooms than if they had bought from a big distributor and we all know why that is so there's no point in going over that again and it something the big companies cannot avoid. 4 Most customers don't want to pay in cash? Huh? Ours pay in cash or check upon delivery, no problemo! Some smart tech saavy crews even take payment over their smart phone now! 5. When there is lots of mushrooms prices drop and chefs like to lowball pickers. OK when there is lots of mushrooms is a blanket statement. Lots of mushrooms somewhere may not be lots of mushrooms someplace else. Chefs try to get the best price from EVERYBODY not just pickers. 6. Stressed out and likely to be in an accident from driving all night? Not an issue for those with good time management skills who think and plan ahead. And who delivers mushrooms all night? (See above example of delivering) Sorry man it sounded scary when you ckim over it but when you take your break it down issue by issue there is nothing to fear selling your own mushrooms but fear itself!

A picker would have to get at least 3 times the field buyer price to make the same money. When a picker sells his own mushrooms then he loses at least a day of picking. Mushrooms loose weight plus the cost of gas to deliver them must be considered. Most customers don't want to pay cash on delivery and can take a month or more to pay. A few never pay. When there is lots of mushrooms available, the price drops fast and chefs like to low-ball pickers. You are also more likely to be in an accident and stress out while rushing morels to customers sometimes driving all night. It's just not worth it. Cash doesn't go bad. It folds nicely in your pocket.

I only use a buyer for cash to operate, gas, food, etc and sell maybe 20 percent of the haul weekly. Otherwise we dry all our morels and sell direct to our own customers.

The comments about prices are interesting. Under the "old" system whereby large groups of pickers gather and sell to field buyers at buying stations the price is controlled by the buyers, or companies. Some buyers buy for their own company others work for a company. There are global and export prices based primarily on availability, demand and quantity. There are local prices too. Outside the old system there are prices based on actual individual consumer demand and domestic demand. For instance, the independent harvesters who are not part of the old system sell their own mushrooms and negotiate prices with their customers themselves. A good example is morels. The average consumer or small restaurant cant do 35.00 a pound for morels but most can swing 25.00 The basis for that price is often the retail market and by removing the middleman from the equation, the harvester gets a better price and the consumer gets mushrooms they could maybe not otherwise afford or the small restaurant can add dishes to their menu they might not otherwise be able to afford. This system is an improvement over the old one for the harvester and puts thm in direct contact with the consumer. Another way of looking at it is selling wholesale direct to the public. An increasing number of independent harvesters of all kinds of wild edibles do not use a buyer. There is no middleman and the consumer very often better quality fresher product and at a more affordable price.

mushroom bandit, Thanks for explaining how things work here. I want to add a couple other bits of info for new visitors.

Asking where buyers are set up will likely get no response. If a buyer is in an area, there must be mushrooms. Other pickers don't want to attract more pickers to that area.

Responses to prices are not likely to get a response. If a buyer is paying a higher price, it will attract more pickers to that buyer. More pickers means more volume sold to that buyer and his buying price will likely drop.

If you want to learn anything from posts here you need to pay attention to previous posts and glean info from all posts. As mushroom bandit says, when the board goes quiet, it's a clue.

Do some home work. Don't expect anybody to just hand over good info. Eventually good info will be posted, but that's 1 to 2 weeks after it's over.

Joe, You still need to read previous messages concerning posting of prices. First, you should know prices can change daily and even hourly depending on volume available around the world and number of buyers in an area are just 2. No one can say what the price will be tonight, I suggest you go to a buying station and find out for yourself. It's the only "current" price you will get.

Joe, there are many reasons prices for mushrooms are not posted here. To condemn a site because you can't get the info you want is irresponsible. You should read previous posts explaining why price is not posted. Become informed before you condemn. You didn't even name an area you are seeking a price or what type mushrooms.

Well as the season in Oregon winds down I would hope your finding some early low elevation ones in Canada! People are srill call me wanting morels, I sell them myself, and just like every year I tell them they waited too long. I don't get that. It almost seems like a psychology thing to where they wait till it's over then act like they want some....Like the car ahead of you on the highway who keeps pretending they're going to pass the semi holding everybody up but, never does actually pass. I look foreward to Wa now and the coming price war for Morels. That's another yearly event, not the price wars but the buyers bs of telling everyone they just bought 500 lbs so they are only paying so much or there's a big harvest happening somewhere which is why they are only paying so much. Bs everytime. I quit selling to the company buyers years ago but keep up on whats going on with them. You heard it here first; The WILL be price wars for what morels come out of Wa this year. Don't sell your morels cheap. I blame the pickers themselves to a large degree for the low prices they get. The companies find the lowest amount they will sell for and then squeeze it down just a little bit more. Hey a dollar a pound might now seem like much but for the company it makes them a lot more money. DO THE MATH!!!!!

conicalifornia, thanks for the forecast. It is always appreciated.

I don't know if you have looked at the results of a study we did in 1995. I did the same in 1994 in the Cave Junction area with zero mushrooms produced. http://matsiman.com/waterstudy.htm

You should also look at the documented seasons on this link. http://matsiman.com/fruitform.htm It strongly indicates temperatures are directly associated with matsutake mushroom production. This model was applied in many areas and years. Similar results were recorded in each case.

I have to agree with Ron. Proper temperatures are also required for morels as well as moisture.

I just don't see the weather saving the morel season in Ca Or or Wa. Maybe Canada will have a normal season but at this point I don't think anybody knows for sure. I don't want to be a downer or mislead people. BUT as we all know in order to make money doing this you have got to be able to fill a bucket. Otherwise it doesn't work. I hope Wa gives up some kind of volume for a harvest but that is ytbd. If your a recreational picker who wants some for eating you could find a few but that's not the same as a commercially profitable endeavor of course. Remember; don't let a field buyer screw you out of your hard days work!

Hi everyone, climatology wise things are looking very promising for a much wetter late spring and summer than the last few and i wouldnt hang your hats up on the morels and spring kings just yet. The west pacific madden joulian oscillation (mjo) is acting up again and is producing another series of intense thunderstorms and typhoons/cyclones around the equatorial micronesia region and is once again inhibiting the progression of the easterlies thus allowing the subtropical westerly jetstream to energize low pressure depressions whether a cut off low or just thunderstorm development over the intermountain west. If everything plays out like im seeing the timing will be very good for the full moon around june to start producing nice mushrooms almost everywhere from california to the yukon. Nevertheless global oceanic and atmospheric wind patterns are still showing very promising signs of a fairly strong southern oscillation or el nino developing by early next fall and this time my friends could be the real deal! The oceanic hydrothermal kelvin wave surfacing right now is anomally wise so warm the color spectrum can barely represent the warmth of water coming to the surface southeast of hawaii and northeast of the equator. This surfacing and progression of warm water should accentuate the already warm sea surface temperatures around the peruvian and ecuadorian coast and really start the el nino to take full control of the global weather. In addition, the mjo episode occurring right now should help propagate more kelvin waves eastward toward peru and ecuador and is what happened during May of 1982. This led to a full fledge el nino and consequently a very extremely wet winter along the west coast of north america. This summer, weather wise, is going to be very very unusual in terms of normal if normal is such a thing. In regards to the morphological variance in size of matsutake fruiting bodies based on moisture levels in spring and summer is very interesting and i would predict that your study plots display some very large matsutake this late summer around middle of september. I would also predict large numbers of mushrooms too. cheers to seasonal changes and long days

Gennda, the burns off 2 and 97, Leavenworth area. I would concur with Ron about having to work your butt off to get any even for personal use. Unless there is rain really soon, there just isn't going to be much going on. My advice to the personal use folks is to go to your natural spots as many of them are more apt to have held on to some moisture.

Ron, thanks for the reply and the update.

Your right. You're there and can accurately describe the situation. Other visitors appreciate your onsite report. It will likely save others gas money and a worn out body.

Thanks again, Matsiman

The northern slopes have already flushed. All the way up to 5300 ft. So have the western. Not everyone of them but most. Sue you still have remote high elevation places but they require long hard packs often overniters because of distance from a road. That is not for most people. When your out in it everyday you know whats up. But if you must you go right ahead, gas up the car and head out!

Ron, Well said.

I wouldn't call the season completely over. There is still northern aspects (slopes) and higher elevations. Granted prospects are slim, but still possible, Could be personal use amounts if we get rain.
If you think Ron is trying to discourage you from picking, do as he said, go look for yourself.

Me and my people have done well thus far. But we always do well. Or is basically over now unless you wanna walk a burn all day for maybe a pound or two. Lol. Your average Joe hasn't done well at all this year. Even family groups of Asians have struggled mightily just to buy gas and rice, no joke. The predicted harvest from the burns in Ca and Or didn't go off as expected. No snowpack and no rain and hot weather may have played a role. er uh I dunno duh. . . .Extremely dry conditions persist everywhere with no rain in the forecast so. . . .? Anyone expecting the burns in Wa to produce in quantity will be disappointed. Like last year, this is just a tough year and there is little to no roadside picking let alone filling a bucket in two hrs anywhere thus far. You have to be able and willing to climb the steepest hills and get far from the beaten path to fill a bucket. As you all know we have REAL MOUNTIANS out west here not those little speed bumps the folks elsewhere whine about. More lolling. As I said a while back, and just like last year the seasons morels belong to the hardcore few, maybe something like 10 percent of musroom pickers can hack the brutal physical effort needed to make money in a season like this and that's certainly true so far. Don't believe me? Go see for yourself. Everybody and his brother has combed the roadsides everywhere and a million footprints in the dust is all the proof you need. Ya I heard all the propaganda being spread by companies about big harvest coming so we're only paying x amount. Were only paying x amount because theres a big haul coming in from somewhere....None of thure just the same crap as everywhere year meant to deceive the pickers into selling cheap. Some buyers are happy to see how little they can get the poor and desperate to sell for anfer a hard day of REAL WORK. Its truly the worst of human nature, man preying on his (desperate, poor and hungry) fellow man. Which I why we work outside that appalling system and everybody gets a fair shake. Best of luck to those who dare but I'm telling you right now unless you like to punish yourself all day and work to exhaustion then crawl into bed at night in pain and misery stay away! Let the young people and professional hardasses have the morels. Your not as fit for this thing as you think you are!

Daddy in Wa; Perhaps August's prediction earlier this year that it might be better to focus upon boletus instead of morels was a good one. But then I would surmise that he knows where to find morels on his side of the mountain when he wants too.

Got a chance to check out a couple of the Wa burns for personal use on Saturday. I hiked around some really steep hills for about four hours total and only came out with a few morels. Saw very little evidence of picking. It was very, very dry. I am guessing that once we get some rain, it may be worth going back if you are willing to work really hard.

Well fellow shroomers, the california morel season went flash bang! and it was over and now oregon has done the same thing. Wham bam all at once massive morels and poof it was done! here's to hoping washington has some kind of season but it's just as hot and dry there so expecting the same to happen there. another year where the same clowns as usual predicted a massive harvest and low prices that never happened. Ha. canada may or may not happen as expected so don't quit your day jobs and if you already did better go see if you can get it back right now.

Big morrell; The only time I have seen buyers there was after the School Fire and the next years burn, at Pomeroy & at the edge of the forest. I sold to a restaurant whenever I passed thru Dayton, at Huckleberries in Spokane, at CdA resort catering in CdA also Gretchen's Kitchen on about the 5th floor, also at a couple health food stores in CdA. That is a few, just knock on doors and ask to see the chef, a word to the wise.... do not bug a chef when he or she is in preparation for lunch or dinner. I will not be trying to compete since having my stroke.

I like to watch the tamarack when going over the Blues because they are easy to see, if the Larch is ready I might turn up summit road and check a few patches or down lower if it is not. I like Spring Creek up past all the pine a bit later.

Lyle; I watched the show also that came on after dredging for dollars in the sea. It seems there is always someone thinking that they are gonna corner the market on something. I had a friend who was going to be Mr. Truffle and thought that he could control the price; he has been gone from the truffle scene for maybe ten years. Another friend thought that he set the price and he too is gone to who-knows-where. Those shows are interesting but there are better dredges in the sea that we don’t get to see, they employ fine gold traps that the producer either does not know exist or they do not allow filming of their operation. Instead we see the drama instead of real gold dredging.

Lyle guess you will have to actually try buying to know about the work involved.part of what's wrong in this world today people are to quick to judge others you have to walk a mile in someone else's shoes before you know get both sides of a story and get your facts straight otherwise its just a judgment without all the information  .TV is always hyped nothing new there.

That's a cool idea, I like it. I bring them too but have just had them on the corner of my table. Your way is a good space saver. Did you ever get those people that glance over at your table, see these "abnormal" musrooms, and look like they fear for their lives a little bit? I watched one lady take an extra step away as she walked by, so as to increase the buffer distance between her and the fearsom fungi- lest the reach out and grab her. It made me chuckle.

...amen on the MD bible if one could find time, I had to concentrate on what I call the goof-proof fungi only and huckleberries which I purchased from pickers. I drilled holes in the corner of Arora's other book and a USFS publication; chained them to hang from the canopy so folks could read up on various mushrooms.

Heh, that's more or less the exact same gig that I've got going Lobo. Not much sleep sure is right. Picking dawn to dusk, driving home, prepping for market, a couple hours asleep, then up early for the market. I guess I'm often guilty of getting caught up identifying some new interesting species after I get home though, further cutting into sleep time. Mushrooms Demystified can turn 11 pm into 2 am pretty quick.

Right on the money Joe, a buyer catches it from both ends and if it is a tarp drying operation the morels must be turned to prevent carmelization; spelling may be off but to not turn the morels can cause chefs to not buy any more. Then is the prevention of sporing out etc, no time to sleep doing that job right. I was trying to do two farmers markets, deliver to my chefs and pick my product myself, little sleep there also.

Have to agree with boletus Joe.I'm thinking lyle has buyers mixed up with companies .buyers do a lot of work and are just paid commission they don't sell the mushrooms just buy them and are basically employee, s.any expenses they have are out of there own pocket and they have to pay tax as well its the company that makes most of the profit.

Llye.... You must be an accountant is my guess. I have a lot of admiration for just how hard the station buyers work. Take a look around you when your at a station and just SEE WHAT IS GOING ON. and not when things have quieted down.... Grading, Weighing, Shipping, Bookkeeping.... and then trying to keep your pickers on side when the price drops, (or when another buyer "run's" the price). Then there is the scouting, the setting up the dryers and the camp, Oh and the banking.... and after all that you have to eat, sleep and wipe your ass. A few times in my 40+ years I have thought Hmmm.... might be nice to be a buyer.....NOT!!

I agree with ol' gulch. This is my first year running a drying op but it's already clear to me that it will be a full time job. It's very easy for pickers to go online and see that dried morels are retailing for 3 times what they're getting fresh, but there is significant overhead and expense before the buyer hits their profit margin- not to mention far greater risk.

Hey Lyle, while I absolutely agree with you that there is big money in it for buyers, I think there's a little more to it than the picture you painted. I've never bought for a commercial company, I pick for my farmers markets and restaurants, and have solld commercially, and have bought from a few guys when I need more mushrooms for my markets. But I have been doing a lot of reserch into distributing my mushrooms myself, as (just like you) I have seen the potential to make a lot more money selling retail. What I have found is, there is absolutely work. Lots of work, actually. Time sent organizing shipping from remote burns, time getting the mushrooms to the shipping company, time spent developing customers, time spent distributing to customers, if buying from others- time spent doing just that, time spent organizing and planning (since everything must happen very efficiently with fresh mushrooms) if drying, time spent setting up dehydrators, maintaining them, and moving the mushrooms through. Etc. Etc. And if you can't do it all yourself, then of course you have to pay someone to. Not to mention costs- shipping costs, fuel, dehydration equipment, baskets, refrigeration if storing them overnight, etc etc. If I were to pick 60 lbs of morels and get double their commercial price selling them myself, but it took away a day of picking, I'd be losing money by the combination of lost picking time and distribution costs. Not saying that it isn't worth it to the buyer, because obviously it is, but I am saying that there's a lot more to it than we see when we get our cash and the baskets magically disappear into the back of the buyer's tent.

Hers' the thing folks - do the math before you sell your take! If a buyer pays you 12 a pound they at least double their money if they dry the morels, that's a low average, often they make even more if they sell retail or small quantity etc... If they sell the morels fresh, they easily TRIPLE THEIR MONEY! in a matter of a few days usually, and for no real work at all. Oh I can hear the wailing and screaming of the buyers from here already!!! But the fact is compared to the picker who does the REAL WORK, the buyer doesn't work at all. Theres big money in morels for the buyers, don't let them tell you any different. I know of one family operation that supports everybody in the family during the spring season and that's a lot of extra cash flowing to several different people. All of it off the pickers hard work!
