User_Name: Northern picker MessagesAs of this Friday. No buyers yet in the Nass. Only one I seen open was ricks in terrace. And he's not in the shack he's just left his number on the door so I'm not sure the prices yet. User_Name: Northern picker MessagesHey robster, I was up the Nass 2 days ago, on Friday. And aside from a couple of LITTLE cauliflowers , nothing yet. Mind you with the cool nights and rain that's been happening I expect it should be soon. Although come this Tuesday were expecting warmer temperatures. And lots of sun. My advice would be to give it another week and check again. At least thats my plan User_Name: Ol' Gulch MessagesHello all, this year I'm getting into markets and restaurants to sell my pickings. Should demand exceed what I can personally pick, I thought it would be good to try get in contact with other pickers in my area (the fraser valley) who might be interested in selling to me on occasion. If you'd like to chat about it here's my email: yourwildestfoods@gmail.com Hope everyone's having a great season! p.s. rain: yay! User_Name: robster MessagesHi , any news about the nass? Looking forward to any info. Thank you User_Name: Zelly MessagesDoes anyone know what the buyers are paying for fresh obsters and chanties? User_Name: Lobo Messagesmedicina mush; I don't powder the conks but I do dry them completely before use. A friend in Portland cut them with his bandsaw and then put them into a high speed processor for me. They come out looking spun, kind of like loose cotton ball type material. The conk is hard enough to burn up the bearings in most food processors. I then fill a metal tea ball with the material. In a separate smaller ball I place some of the Cows Cows placing them both into a stainless kettle that whistles when boiling. The pot intermittently sings on a low key when I turn the heat down for simmering one hour. The conk that I use goes by many names but Fomitopsis pinicola is its scientific name, Reishi is also reported as good but I do not use it. I use Ligustium canbyi root in my pot because not only is reported to be better than Ligusticun osha but it is easy for me to find in my favorite stomping area and takes the bitter taste of pinicola out. User_Name: Kootenay brother MessagesThanks jean! , For the info! Keep us posted on the mushroom scene ! I'll be selling shrooms to you this fall, I guess its firewood time gonna try to get er done just in time for shroom season!! thanks for the tel# K.B. User_Name: medicina mush Messagesi wanna know lobo do you put the mushroom in powder or still fresh when u boil it? User_Name: Lobo MessagesSteve from Oregon; I bring the pot to a boil then quickly turn the gas down as low as it will stay lit and let it steep for one hour. I use the red banded conk & some cows cows together. ………… Mad Morel; thanks for the phone call, glad you are doing so well. I neglected to mention that I’ve taken a few steps with my cane the rest are with the walker. I am learning to write again with my right hand but it looks like 1st grade. Boy I wouldn’t wish this type of a stroke on anyone, 10 months at this point. User_Name: Lobo Messagesbsquinas; The price changes from minute to minute in the field. Possibly a broker could quote a price but it will most likely change day to day. Also it depends where a person may be, matsutaki prices also depend upon location. Some of the varied locations that I am aware of having price differences in the field are British Columbia & Ontario in Canada. Alaska, Washington, Oregon & Eastern USA. Good Luck. User_Name: bsquinas@gmail.com MessagesHi what is the price per pound for pine mushroom for 2014 fall? User_Name: Phantom picker MessagesWent out today and picked 25lbs of shanties but they did not have much moister in them, ended up giving them away.Theres a few different shrooms out there so it's looking promising but we need a lot more moister to get things happening. The moss is moist undercover and anything in the open is crispy. Also picked one small bag of garbage and one fair size bag of beer cans and bottles from last season so it wasn't a bad day after all lol.Garf, I to love the fall man it's my favorite time of the year.if the rains can get here we might just have a pick.good luck to everyone and be safe. User_Name: MushroomManMike MessagesI went up to Nahatlatch valley yesterday! found some white chanterelle's (very few) as well as some yellow chanterelle's and Brain corral. No Signs of pines yet though... need some cool weather to roll in! User_Name: Mushroom slayer Messages10 pounds chantrells today. All a good size. Took to my usual restaurants. Only one chef out of 6 restaurants would take them. To sell them all had to take 5 a pound. Usually they sell real easy for 8 to 10. Must be to early for chefs to want chantrelles. User_Name: Boletus Joe MessagesYumm! Yumm! A few yellows and whites, all very tasty when they are dried out. Had to toss about 1/3 because of the mould. Rain please or some fog. User_Name: thegirls MessagesYa i hear you..just giving an update! :-) User_Name: pickers Messagesright. They have not responded to my email yet. will be happy to post that info when they get back to me ...... mikebrat@hotmail.com User_Name: shroomkid Messageshi driftless, yes, at the Victoria Public Market. but they aren't mine! haha! I've only found about 6 lbs so far. they're nice and hard, but many out there are going mouldy already, as it only rained one day a couple weeks ago, and did a mini-pop. a pre-pop. I'm wondering if it's the cool nights and mornings that are helping it along... And, for the record, that is the most I've found in August ever. we usually have to wait till september and october here on southern Van. Isle. I hear through one grapevine that it's already starting on Haida Gwaii and another says Prince Rupert has begun. Can anyone on here confirm that? User_Name: Kootenaybrother MessagesStill raining!! User_Name: Mad morel MessagesI have posted some Videos on Facebook of the many Yellow Chanterelles I have been picking. If you go to facebook Type in Auguststeinbornsr@facebook.com. User_Name: shroomkid MessagesHi CasperH, thanks! sounds like you have some good spots. I hope you aren't gauging your harvest by last year's epic pickings around here... (folks who had tramped parks for decades were seeing chanties for the first time in their lives and texting me photos, asking if they were the real thing...) Do you have a cooler? I have one more option, and that is Alex Achtem at Local Motive - he buys produce from local farmers and supplies markets, etc. here on the lower Island. I am truly not sure if he is set up for shrooms, but it would be worth asking him. you should be able to google him or the organization. good luck. you can email me too, at the addy below, that i gave to cranberydawg. full buckets! User_Name: CasperH MessagesThanks for the tip shroomkid! I'll be looking into all these possibilities. I've got a few chefs that want em but I average (mid season) 150lbs a day (6hrs) and don't wanna waste anything. Full buckets to ya! User_Name: Mountainflattops MessagesWell It looks kind of sad in the mushroom department in South Central BC Forestry maps are showing high to extreme fire conditions If we don't get rain for the last two weeks of August may as well stay home. 1998 I was still fighting forest fires in Early Oct and there was no fall mushroom season that year Going to do a Rain dance or something soon. User_Name: mushroom bandit Messagesya i'm right by the airport User_Name: Kootenay brother MessagesChoppers are spinning like mad up here in the koots!Looks like a whole bunch of morel turf is opening up next spring should great! User_Name: cranberrydawg MessagesDid go for a walk today even though it was as crispy as I've ever seen it. Found bunches that came out weeks ago I guess and just dried up and withered away. Didn't get to Tofino mind you, so perhaps it is wetter down there...always is. I'll contact you shroomkid as the season progresses...for now it's Labour Unlimited lol... User_Name: shroomkid MessagesHello to the BC pickers, it might be worth your while to contact Island Spice Trade, Andy Shepherd is the owner. He is carrying fresh chanterelles down at the Victoria Public Market now. So, he might be a potential buyer too. haven't asked him myself, just saw his post on fb, showing his new stuff, and the new stuff that Untamed Feast is carrying, which includes seaweed and BC wild rice now, as well as mushrooms. Good luck! User_Name: shroomkid MessagesHi cranberrydawg, email me if you want to get in touch: formosa30@shaw,ca. :) cheers User_Name: shroomkid MessagesHi KasperH, ... if you have mushrooms already, then start talking to the finer restaurants in your region, and set up a relationship. You will make more $ this way. You can also start hitting the farmers markets, if you have enough stock the restau's won't take. And a final direct sales option is to take photos and post an ad on craigslist, kijiji, and usedvictoria. good luck. direct sales is the best as far as $ goes. This is good timing for setting it up with the restaurants and chefs. You can also try the Island Chefs Collaborative. And call up Untamed Feast. Try them too. It could be great timing for him. good luck. User_Name: KasperH MessagesAny buyers on Van Island for any mushrooms yet? Im in the Cowichan area and both buyers are still closed. If you got info please email Cdatsik@gmail.com or FB Kasper Plus Jukka thanks and full buckets to ya! User_Name: Mad morel MessagesSteve from Oregon, Sorry for not getting back to you we have been picking just about every day and there's so much to keep up with I just have not had the time to our remember what I need got do and now it looks boletes are coming on and no time to do anything (no rest for me) at least tell the snow's fly. Here is my E-mail address auguststeinbornsr@gmail.com also auguststeinbornsr@facebook.com When I have some time I post pic's and Videos of my day, picking, cleaning and sale's keeps me going. User_Name: cranberrydawg MessagesQualicum Beach, shroomkid. Do most of my pickins out towards Tofino though...I think I'm going to wait for the rains before I do much of anything come to think of it. Anything out there right now has got to be on the crispy side I would imagine. But, as we all know, things can change pretty quickly around here. As a matter of fact, as I look out my window right now, I see that lo and behold a storm is brewin'. Yippee!!! User_Name: campfireman MessagesThanks for the info,... Matsiman. I was kinda thinking the same, figured I'd just ask a season vet. in pickin... lol plenty full buckets for all ..PeAcE User_Name: shroomkid MessagesHey cranberrydawg, where on the Island are you? It could be fun to meet up for a wander some time, if we're both in the same vicinity. I'm in Vic, but I come up-Island for various reasons, shrooming being one of them, for sure. User_Name: cranberrydawg Messagesany buyers buying chanties on Van Isle yet? Was thinking of going for a walk but not for my health if you know what I mean... |
