Hello folk., Well I'm as confused as ever, ground mushrooms are absent, usually we have a zillion slimies ( deer mushroms , Hygrophorous) here , however mushrooms growing in trees seem to be thriving, lots of oysters and believe it or not reishi , hell, I have only see them in the spring , they are just coming out, the biggest one was about the size of a small fist , but they were there ! plenty of shitakies of course ,I think the best time for them this year so far , anyways happy turkey day to all , They are cooking up a storm here at home , I just helped a bit , hell like 10 or 15 dishes but I am well in my way to get drunk, (posted while drunk}, be well all .

MTCW (my two cents worth) we lived down ny arrow parks ferry near Nakusp and i gotta agree with Tinker -beatuiful area, super friendly people, very healthy boxwood patches but just terrible mushroom harvesting. Just terrible! har hardy har. So bad in fact, as we are gluttens for punishment - we head back there every year. Land prices all over are quickly on the rise so if you plan to relocate, research and move quick. For those who have snow and can clear it, grab a few contracts as it pays well and keeps one's legs and lungs in shape for when you need them the most -harvesting! Peace Folks.

Garf,I live in Kamloops. Please feel free to send some of your rain our way.lol This town is a damn desert. As for Nukusp,it's really beautiful there. It's a small town that borders the arrow lakes. The mountains are tall and rugged, and the scenery is certainly breathtaking. The mushroom picking is like anywhere else, there's good years and bad years. On the plus side, there's lots of gentle terrane to pick, which is great for us older folks. On a good year down there I can pick as much as I used to humping my ass up the Van Dyke mountain. Also, the fall weather there is usually spectacular. It really is a lovely little town, and the people are quite frendly.I have never taken any pics of the area so unfortunately I can't send you any.You should consider coming over this way to pick some fall,I think you would love it.I would love to see some pics of your area,my e mail is drtroad@telus.net

Hey wild side, the part of the burn that I checked out is in fairly gentle terrain. There are some steep areas, but as long as there's mushrooms who cares! It's great that you have snowboarding to get you through the winter.I already have ants in my pants, and it's only November! lol

Hey Tinker, Ahhh - Morels already eh! I hear ya. :-) I've too have been researching morels in the West Koot's. The terrain may be a little harsh as we picked there years ago for Matsi's but that won't stop us. Local efforts are paying off as local interest is on the rise so get organized folks. Its time! Moving on, Got a new snowboard this year so it'll happily help get me thru the winter. Take it Easy Folks.

Hey there fellows., Well I did not make it to the shore yet , being doing a bit of farm work, also I'm getting kind of lazy , long season, I'm about ready for a vacation, however I did pick myself about 200 pounds of shitakies today, they are still pumping, ., hopefully one more trip to the shore before it's too late and it's a wrap for this season. it has been unusually warm this past couple weeks , some days we are hitting the sixties , however no mushrooms, I guess they went dormant , got to wait until next year.

Out today picking good Boletes in Oak and Pine terrainlthough alot of moisture there are no worms. Boletes freeze very well especially when saturated. Have/am drying Matsi/Chantys/Boletes in a limited amount. 28gram bags. matsi looks the best dried, will look at market price accordingly. I scrounged a few pines and healthy Chantys yesterday, however not worth a commercial pick. (Will pay $4.00LB for good Yellows from Island) There used to be good patches out there in previous years, however logged. Maybe huint for Hedgehogs and Yellowfeet once rain settles down. email: sunnyscharters@shaw.ca

Mad Morel; Happy VETERANS DAY and thank you and all other veterans who served from their respective countries so much for your years of service to help keep our world free. It truly is a sad day that your designated BULL BOARD has degenerated to the point where people who were never in battle or defending freedoms or who never came home disabled from across the oceans during the Vietnam conflict period of time like you and John did can do what they have done to the board that was created and designated for posting PERSONAL, NON-MUSHROOM related thoughts and opinions. I have spoken with Chris Matherly and he will allow truth to be posted on his board. He has allowed me to post my negative opinions about one of his past forays without censorship in the past and I believe that he is one who will not be manipulated by m5s, rpm and other liars. A truthful blog on certain subjects coming as soon as I find the time to make it.

Good to see a few familiar call names. I trust the fall season has been enjoyable wherever the wind pushed you. I'm doing some research and I have a few questions if you have a spare moment. I'd like to learn from some of you, in particular the veterans, of your efforts you may have taken towards giving back to the forest? How was it received? Do you feel there was some progress? I've read and participated on the Mastiman for a few years and would like to thank him and his team for making this site possible. Its been very helpful. Regards. weilerhart@shaw.ca

Re locked gates and harvesting private lands... As these lands are private for the most part there is not alot you can do but times are a changing... If they dont follow the old forest practice code then in future they will have to pay the assest value of standing timber in property tax, instead of the 5% of the value they now enjoy. Mills around BC have refused to pay thier taxes so the mayors are now taking companies to task over private lands to raise $$$ for the coffers... its about time IMO time for a more lvl playing field... FYI the best matsi patch in north america is now over mature logs laying on the ground... Island Timberlands sux big and should be in jail IMO... to log raprian zones that were left by other compaies is beyond any logic... to then leave 90% of the trees on the ground is criminal

If anyone can pick 700lbs a day its boomer... he is probably picking one of my patches ;) Knowing that boomer often will pick for an afternoon and then the nxt day it would really be a 2 day pick... Jimmy too always did that...also Boomer seldom picks alone on big picks so I would guess he was with Lawrence and prob bought some from others up the Dyke so they did not have to run to town... the real question is what % were buttons as low grade dont count with the pros... I have picked over 300lbs/day many times but only on the island... nvr on the mainland... nowadays i prefer to pick lobster mushrooms...700lbs a day or more possible if you dont mess with the chanties and the $$$ are better...easier pick as well... besides dont have to sell to the Joes to survive.peace everyone and have a great winter. Im off to Indo to buy more teak... got my website up now... http://www.enchantedteak.com R

Hello there ., Well it seems the faucet has been shut. off , very few matsies left , this year has been an bloody enigma ( however I did learn a lot } very short season, to say the least ., I remember a few years back , Thanksgiving day to be precise , I had dinner that night in Boston [Plenty of snow that night ], and afterwards the plan was to go cod fishing however , the next morning in our way to the ship we sow the biggest flush of matsutake flags ever , so of course we delayed the fishing since we wanted to go matsie hunting , I AM TELLING YOU , that was the biggest flush I have ever seen in the eastern coast line , but now early November and things are shutting down. best of luck to all .

Another buyer; It may be a bit late in the year to obtain arnica flowers, I picked some this summer to place inside my sock when a blister began developing but did not put any extras aside for selling. One summer when I was selling wild gourmet mushrooms in a farmers market the man next to me was selling arnica cream, I gave my only bottle to a friend for her arthritis and wish now I had obtained more from him. ..... I am going to do some more late season fire morel research and will watch for arnica.

I observed picking pines that deer chop and chomp the tops that results in a rather clean cut. as i dry most of mine, i've recently started slicing the tops along with some stem for harvest. its cleaner, is more efficient and resulting in better quality. after is decomposes, there's no trace. Matsiman or others: any idea if that discourages future growth?

Well things are now slowing here in PR. Still a few new ones but not rewarding for your time in bush. The " second flush" don't look good right now. But who knows, nobody has figured the pines out yet. I had a short year with my wife's surgery but been out most of Oct. It is fun while it's lasting. Hope you all are having luck. Just remember, after you pick that schroom, put the ground you just picked, back to the way it was before you got there. The peeled moss and dug up ground can't help your return luck. congrats cougarman. things seems to be working for you. i'm not sure what marketing imagination means though? may be helpful to explain. a much bigger picture is some people would rather explore options that may help others. as a pickers philosophy, its always a wise idea to invest a little time looking for new territory. Regards All.

Ya, marketing imagination, and the Matsutake facts. Today I headed into the Patch real early and picked a good bucket of 1's and some 2,3,4 and with the time change headed back to Victoria to me humble Mushroom stand and had a decent afternoon of sales. 1's $24.00LB and others are $12.00. See how this week pans out for the buyers. Usually when I sell the Chantys ($12.00LB, I include a taste of a Matsi Cap and low and behold most all come back to buy Matsi. // Today some real fat number one in the Patches, however not a lot of starters.... Matsi Nation. C

cougarman, you hit the nail on the head. what's needed is a much HUGER oraganized Media Campaign to spark interest. There's not nearly enough of this presently. Aroma, flavour and for many, many more, a taste of something that's new to them = Wild Mushrooms. As K. Hunter supports, (me too) its also about product accountability. ie. every commercially sold apple has a tracable stamp ... something practically simpler though? Peace All.
