Matsutake Benefits: As we knwo, the Internet and Books contain much information about the Matsi. Some purported amazing health benefits to us Humans ( actually still just cave people). Not just us, but Matsi befefits a myriad of other life forms. When I sell Matsi to the local people, the Tribe around Victoria, I tell them to do some research themselves, however when a customer was buying a lLB bag of 4s for $12.00, I told her that one reason the Matsi is so revered by the Japanese is that it waz the only thing that survived the Atomic Bombs in many areas. Most people I sell Matsi to are coming back for more after finding extremely supportive benefits, as well as the 'ol woody' that this Shroom is relatively famous for supporting. Sell the benefits, the aroma and flavor are excellent. With a fraftion of the Patches left to harvest in our lifetime, I am sure Matsi will rise to fame here in Victoria. After all the City is full of Mansions with designer kitchens ready to do thier thing. Yada Yada Yada. C

your right on the money there cougarman, but it's the canadian way, penalize those that follow the rules rather than holding those accountable that don't. Ridiculous that the island has just been decimated and now the public can't even utilize it, not just shroomers. Outta sight, outta mind, the canadian motto.

Locked Gates: It is the resposibility of the outfit to hire people to protect thier equipment and resource. Seems these outifits are so cheap that they fiqure the Gates are the program. Well this will ghange. Its not right and extremely selfish. There are things called trailers to house quards and things like survelence cameras to monitor the situations. The Mushrooms are for pickers and do not belong to the outfits, nor do the outfits own lakes, rivers, animals, minerals and everything else. They have a right to Log, thats all, so they will be squared away sooner or later. C

I feel for the people that come across locked gates. Its to bad there couldn't be a simple solution for all. But as a logger when there is work,(not to often these days) I will tell you the obvious. There are some idiots in our area that are robbing the small independent operators blind. By the way i am not talking about the island. The problem was really bad when fuel was at record highs. They not only stole fuel, they took tools ambulance supplies etc.Eurocan in Kitimat is laying off 535 people on jan 31 2010. I love picking but the crumbs the Joes are throwing us these days just don't cut it.

Called Carla Saturday at 3:45 she said "come on in" with boletes. 80 minutes and 50 miles later I was there...only she wasn't. A phone call would have been nice if she was shut down. She seems to have fallen off the edge of the world... Bolete report, Coos Bay and North: The blowout pop has come and it's 50% (or more) wormy and the mushrooms are BIG. Picked patches finishing up. Drop in prices attributed to Trout Lake. However, I understand it has snowed. Ridiculous variations on the Charlie Novi grade popping up. Now, if the cap is turned down and the gills white some buyers are trying to #2 buttons if the gills (!) are "too thick"!!!

I have never spent a night in the bush,I am not proffessing to be great, I have been "turned around" especially in "BobQuin", trust your compass and know how to use it......make sure your GPS has batteries, some water, munchie's and a lighter, waterproof matches, dress warm and always let me know where you are picking, just in case.....

Thanks for that link Keith.... That was my dad that was out there all night.... What the paper failed to let everyone know was that he was chased and treed by a cougar..... AVSAR.... they gave up and because of policies that they have me and 2 other experienced bush people were not allowed to help. After 5 hours of them looking they quit due to the whether. Thats when we went in and after 20mins of looking we have voice contact..... The new system they have is to call the RCMP to evaluate the situation then wait 1 hour to see if the picker comes out then they call search and rescue. The orignal call was made at 6:30pm they did go in until 11:00pm.... If this had been a matter of life or death who knows what kind of result we might have had.... Now to there defence the bush had alot of windfall and it was raining buckets, they put 5 grewling hours in out there and to people who don't do that for a living its tough work... Its also funny how they forgot to mention that the SARS member who went in after us got turned around and hurt so my friend, dad and myself had to get them out. The new system they have has hole and could use some change... SARS is always looking for new members and ideas and I hope this was a lesson to all... So yes please becareful out there picking no matter how experienced.

Actually in some areas Ive plucked out ten pound clumps.A pound a minute is an understatement. Its more than just parking beside the other cars and sifting through the shreds to be a successful matsi harvester. It takes an understanding of tree stands which produce certain fungi in symbiosis.A remote area of your own may on some years reveal more than you currently understand .

Hello folk , Garf I have a question for you, are you a night owl or an early bird , I usually read the posts here early (for me) , 8 am. in the morning and sometimes I see you posting as early as 3 or 4 am. your time , that's too early for me , anyways the weather as been unpredictable here in the east coast as well, two weekends ago it was snowing and last week some days we were hitting 70 degres F. so as you may guess matsies are flagging like crazy , I was in the coast this weekend and I did pretty good, however few buttons, I will post some pictures since I want you folks to get an idea of the type of landscape those shrooms are growing in. good luck to all .

Prices Vancouver Island: Looks like 1s are floating between 9-20. My 1s are $24.00, down from $48.00. They are opening quickley and soon qualify for my $12.00 group of 3,4,5. No worms as I make an incicion in just about every Mushroom stem, a little hole into the cap I cut a bit to see how much worm. Yellow Chantys I sell out at $12.00, whites as we know are going to the hereafter with the rain, but what a great year for whites drying just right on the stem before the big rain. We have had a decent flush and some areas haven't come on yet, where other areas are pretty well done..... this is one the same mountain. I hope to get another month in, qnd who knows, back in 96' I picked beauty yellows in mid dec along with a few pines. Sell as many shrooms locally, there is a good demand, after all Victoria and Tinsel Town have all these people in great houses with big kitchens who like gourmet foods. Yada Yada. C

Probably 10 hours of light in the bush now. For every one making a killing, there are ten doing so so. It has been proven two or three years ago, that if there is any kind of volume overall the prices will drop to two or three bucks a pound. There is no way the Joes will allow the common weekend warrior to make good coin anymore!

garf..... you have to give it up.... i have heard these big mushroom stories for 15 years.... and the keep getting bigger.... i remember walking into TC's shroom shack in terrace on a bad year in the late 1990's and he said " makin yer 1500 a day?".... at the time no one was making that money! prices were 10 and mushrooms scarce.... i call it the buyer BS to get people into the bush.... just like now 10 years later there is this big flush on the island or the nass is hitting again! if the buyers are pulling out of the nass, the mushrooms are gone.... and there (i repeat again) is no big flush on the island.... but the BS just keeps coming and the stories get bigger.... 700 lbs in a day at an average of $10 is 7000.... and well just not worth commenting any more... zed out!

rj, please clarify.... one person picked 700lbs in a day of pines? i am no rocket scientist but average full bucket is about 20 lbs, so that is 35 buckets give or take... so got to fill 1 bucket every 20 minutes (12hr day -no travel) or one pound a minute..... now i (with one picking partner) have picked 140 lbs pines in a day and 210 lbs chantrelles (they were within 200 yards of the road) on another day so understand big poundage days but 700 lbs for one person... it is pretty hard to carry more than 50 lbs out of the woods.... something smells like horse sh*t elmer... zed out

hey Dano.not bitter at all we had a great season.did very well this season.my poopoo truck was full every day, that`s the reason for the slow drive in.had the follower`s again.same thing every year.we miss ya,how `s it in hope.new flush happening again, heavy botton`s.you can smell them, boomer was doing well too,his best day was 700 lb`s shroom`s,and he played the river patch, know wonder mm only got 30/40 lb each as they don`t know the patch, but boomer kept it clean. it`s called experence mm so keep whineing.20 is good.prices should stay up as it`s almost over, new flush till it snow`s,warmed up here, never know, could go longer if it stays.it`s great as most buyer`s headed out, only the cartel left here, by monday, full pack`s too all.larence is on his way down in a feww day`s.it was a great pick this year.just need the contact ,maybe next season, over sea`s to cut out these middle men.the volume is easy, got other`s interested. pick lot`s,Rj.

Garf, I agree. When people bring in a basket of boletes no taller than 2 inches at the biggest.... I know for a fact that they had to tear up the ground to get them that small and then they actually have enough nerve to be upset when I say that "our company policy is not to buy anything that small" :-(

Went for a small hike today and was very distraught at seeing sections of a really good patch just torn to shreds.... some people really should just use the half brain that they were born with.... its really a shame ... i can't understand why someone would intentionally destroy an area and ruin it for everyone including themselves ... doesn't make sense... after the season is over i will take a few hrs and attempt to repair the damage .... i'm wondering if anyone has ever put up any signs asking people to respect the land and leave it the way they found it ,,, also another spot where a fourwheeler decided to cut a trail through crown land and destroyed a pretty big swath... makes me angry and its pretty sad to see.... anyhow i got 17 for my 1s and 2s 8 for good 3s and 4s and 4 for the lower grade 4s and good white 5s..... gl and full buckets

Only "one" buyer left in Kitwanga area. The other buyer left days ago. So you can tell what kind of year it was. (In the kitwanga area) Usually there are people that pick the cranberry that sell in kitwanga. I dont know if the cranberry even put out this year. (Not talking about the Harper.)

mfp.. so sorry, please review the previous posts and carefully read, there is no muskeg matsi's as far as I know, the reason for the post was to reiterate that pickers are not a bunch of pawns that buyers may use at their discression, to scout, follow a empty trail..It is wrong when a buyer sujjests that a area is modulating, when it is not, it costs money to move, I am sure any reasonable buyer would not be appreciative to travel at their own expense for nothing......fuel is too expensive

I rarely weigh in on these conversations regarding what is hitting where, however, i feel strongly that i have to make an exception. Vancouver island may be producing 200 to 500 lbs a day on the weekends for the last 2 weeks. anyone in the know knows 1. this is not terrace where there is 5000lbs a day. 2. there is no big flush at burnt bridge, cowichan, port alberni or Campbell river. i have been picking in some of these areas since 1995 (so newbie to some) and I generally know my stuff. if you really want to know what is coming in on the island... visit one of the buyers or call the Cannery. side note: Cranberry Dawg are U still around? would like to scout some of those Port Alberni areas we discussed a couple years ago.... my patches are very slow! later zed.

Why buy crap product and not beable to sell it when you can go where the $$$$ is...... I went for the same reason everyone else travel to pick...... Yes I was trying to save the picker world here from evil doers but ya cant please the world..... As for the guy who stuck out picking pines in port tell the pickers bringing in 75-100lbs that theres no pines....... Want some spots?....lol... And as for you tofino picker good luck my friend you know where im at if you want some of those big $$$$$..lmfao.....

Last Hurrah for the Pine Mushroom Picker: Today I walked for 2Hrs uphill to the Sacred Patch. I picked about 25Lbs of Number Ones and a few others and Walked out Loaded. The territory waz once the Best Vancouver Island had to offer, now isolated patches between Clearcuts. The Buyers were Paying $16.00 and $10.00, this week I will assess the situation and offer the #1s to Victoria at MY PRICE the other good qualitys will be $16.00LB ( 3,4,5,) to hell with Japan. C

Wow rt well noted... Burnt Bridge is having a nice little flush but the gates get locked up all over the place there. The logging companies are making it hard for the pickers, they lock the gates up as early as 2:30 in the afternoon. And well as for Port Alberni this is one of the best pines years for us in a long time. The mushrooms are plentiful and great quality. For the first time in years the pickers are seeing good prices 17/12/8/4/2. Three years ago when I was picking here it was $1 per lbs. for #1's.

Cougarman don't know not what your objective is saying there is a tremendous flush happening here it's just not true you could be encouraging transient pickers to invest in coming here and they will not make any money thats just cruel theres hardly any patches left and the average picker will tell you that so far as volume there isn't any.I suggest to any pickers thinking of heading this way check with the local buyers and they will tell you there is a very small flush none of the buyers are getting hardly any.Thats why fun gal has come and gone in about 3 hours. So by the way didn;t I already mention that your post may be better suited to a bull board although you are right about the gate problems and access to whats left of our forest.

It will be more FUN when the $14.oo for l's goes up. The $8.00 is way low for 2's. The Shrooms are beauties with that fluffy texture and light veil. So lets get real like $30.00 for l's and $25.00 for 2's cause my l's and 2's go out at $48.00LB in Victoria, my 'other' open caps are $12.00LB. No worms guaranteed. We have a tremendous flush happening on the Island. Timber West is playing Gate games. Pickers are compromised to walk for miles due to closed gates. I blocked a gate a few weeks ago, now less my Radio Antenna and a few scrapes when it waz swung open, needless to say I didn't get in. It is law that Logging Companes cannot interfere with the Hunter, we are Hunters. This Island is being sold off to Foreign Corporations held by very few shareholders. They clearcut, compromise the enviornment and sell the Logs Raw to the U.S.A. We will make a changeup. We will get the land back to the People. Otherwise we will end up like a sterile European Landscape with a very few in control of the Lands, no Bears, No Cougars, No Mushrooms. We are the last of the Hunter Gatherers. I am sure we will not lay it down without a confrontaion. Luck, C

Hey matsiman! I sent you an email, but just wanted to make sure I let you know I'm still down to go if there is still room. I have been checking some of my spots in the Willamette and they haven't started popping here just yet(matsi)...but very soon... Coral is just starting to show and I use them as an indicator in my areas. When the corals are mature matsi will be popping, at least around here... I have also seen what seems to be the opposite of what others(122451) up north are seeing and thats signs of other pickers. spots(non-matsi) I had all to myself last year are now stumptowns.. oh well I can always find new places to pick, and finding a new patch is definitely the most thrilling experience one can have while foraging.

Ah the good old days.Things are a bit different now.The last time i stopped at the zoo there was about fifteen clans camped there. Not even a single 100 thousand dollar motorhome! Not like the old days when it was packed. There is a whole two buyers in the Kitwanga area.Used to be about six or so. Not a soul parked by the highway around 18 mile.Used to be about four to six peeps camping there every year. The free park in the wang has hardly seen a soul use it. The last few times I drove by the depots in Kitwanga there was three cars or less, sometimes none.

just started raining again BC lower main. they are calling for a few days of it ... bring it on ! got my weekend trip planned ... gonna go & see if I can find new patches :) nothing like discovering new grounds .... 12 for 1's , hmm. I just might pick a few... back in 1995 is when I first got introduced to matsutake ( I know I'm new at it , lol ) by a buddy of mine . We took my truck with trailer up to Nass camp for a month ... stayed @ the campground .... still remember finding that very first pine , the woods up there , watching grizzlies around the garbage dump @ night ... brrrr. with a windshield between us and them :) northern lights were something else ! good times @ the pub. met some great ppl. will never that trip , have to go back some day .... full buckets !

Matt Briggs' buyers in Randle and Cougar, WA were paying 17/17/8/4/4 at 9PM tonite. Must be needing some low grade. I undertand a big flush in the Crater/Diamond Lake area is depressing the high grade price.

Greetings All, Well the matsi foray is still on but can only take 5 this time. May be able to do another one later. We will be picking private property, with permission of property owner. Makes it easier that way.

This isn't going to be a go to the patch and pick thing. We will hunt matsi using the signs given us at the time. I'm tiered of patch picking.

Friday 11/13/09 will be the begin date. I'll have campsites for those participating. If it is wet, there is a cover to sleep under, or set up tents. Friday will be a get to know day with a lecture in the evening. Saturday will be a guided foray on private property. Sunday will be a day for each to practice what they learned.

If you intend on picking on public lands, I suggest you get here on Friday to get a free use permit. Public lands are adjacent to private we will pick.

I have a list of 10 who made request to go. I will register the first 5 from that list who respond to this message.

Later, Matsiman

carla, the cost to ship over sea is $15 per lb.that`s air fair ,then another 8 % for the broker fee`s at the markets action house.the better quility shroom will fetch the dollar.chung shroom`s are day`s old before they even packaged, just kept in refigeration, then you take the cost for gel pack`s, styafoam cantianer`s,one kilo basket`s,which you need before the season start`s as chung will not sell,as this way he can control, who`s sending.you need to process your product in the different grades requested. so to some it up,you need the $`s to play the game and a honest broker to work with in order to do bussiness.have done it a feww times but your playing in chung`s ball park, his rules ,his game.when he find`s out where ,who,he`ll do what it take`s to delay your order.by this time your produce could sit for day`s.organization, with out it your toast.that`s why all the buy`ers involed, listen to chung, other wise he`ll break them down, that`s why they all sleep together,or lose almost every thing.he`s got the monie to stop most, but not all,as there are some back door`s,you only need how to open one or two. good luck in your search`s. don`t know it all but his watch dog`s are out there, right CARL.,plenty of pines coming out of terrace and area, lot`s from the nass, kitwanga is doing nicely too.very nice product and plenty too come, as the wealther is rain and warmer temp`s.full bucket`s to all , Rj

I am not sure of the real reason pines fluctuate so much but I have been told they need to pay less for bulk because of the price of exporting. I buy very few pines and am really not that knowledgeable and that was just what I have been told by a few pickers, so if it is wrong information, i am sorry ;-)

RE: Broke Carpenter, There are buyers located in Randle, WA - Cougar, WA - Trout Lake, OR -Crescent Lake, OR - Chemult, OR - Keno, OR - Brookings, OR - and up and down the Oregon coast. There is a small 2000-3000lb a day Matsi flush in the Packwood/Randle area. The Chemult area typically has more pickers and sees about double the volume of the MT ST. Helen's area. Winter mushrooms are plentiful but dry and not worth much to the pickers.

I did not know that pine grew in that climate zone forestharvest .Are you picking them wild or growing from spore? I rarely find them in the forest by spore,it is usually mycorizal fruit in predictable (grannys). If you do farm them, are they grown in the typical tree relations?

Mr. JJJ, i too was in Randle lately. My father died there 14 years ago buying matsies. So my buddy and went to meet mom there to remenece(sp?). I took mom to the buyers and met one who alot of you know and wanted to knock out his beartooth and push him on his boletASS!! Yes it was dirty. But whatever. only 2nd buy stand i have been to in 10 years. Stay away from them myself. My only complaint is the garbage left in the woods by "non english" speaking pickers.

Matsutake!! The Island is popping, even without the rain, certain areas are producing right now. It started to rain lightly a few minutes ago. I think the flush will be healthy cause it has been very cold nights. Buyers are paying $8.00-$20.00. .I hauled in 18LB one morning last week and sold em at $48.00LB. (Ones and Twos). I think the local Victoria/CVancouver consumers will be paying the Japanese price this year. People luv the Yellow Chanterelles at $12.00LB and the Whites are good too, and highly under-rated. It has been a great pick in the dry woods. Luck, C ( 3 Bears this year in the patches fairly close this year, a bit unusual)

Auction prices on Friday at Tsukiji market. US Pines US$45/lb top price, average price US$40/lb, low price US$35/lb. The market prices don't categorise by grade 1 - 6 so you have to make an assumption about grades. My mother-in-law bought Canadian grade 1/2 pines at the grocery store last month for 1000 yen for 100g last month roughly C$50/lb so I figure the those auction prices were for similar quality ie 1 or 2s. Interesting that Chinese pines were roughly 2.5x more expensive and the domestic Japanese pine were roughly 3x more expensive than the Chinese pines.

How dry was it? I only mowed my lawn once in six weeks this fall.(NW, B.C.) If it werent for the morning dew at times, I'm sure there would be tumbleweeds! It took over ten days of off and on rain, before the brown spots changed colour. Now most of my patches are showing very few if any mushrooms, never mind pines.

Why are USA pines twice or more of Canadian pines? Even the small perfect ones aren't worth that here.(Unless there was a spike in prices the last couple of days?) Maybe it is like it was here, just a ploy to get the pickers moving in and committed.

Maudster, Maud-o-ruski, Maud-a-loda-dingdong! Haven't been reading this board much lately, too busy making my fortune at $2 a lb on the chanties - but good to see you are still kicking, albeit in a foreign land. Miss the Hearts games and miss you very much too. I can send you some pines if you like; I am sure I can scrape together a few kilos here on the island. I'll email you soon. Mike C

what is the price at the zoo today? plus the last time i picked i heard that some natives were shooting right by some camps at harper and littering in the forest, how shameful and dangerous is that! people should post pictures of their trucks and cars to make a point that its not tolarated.

I found 2 lobsters, the gills are different color on each one of them. One has lobster color the other is a pale white, both with unforked gills and fresh looking bodies Could anyone tell us how to check edibility. I understood the lobster mushrooms are parasite to other mushrooms.

just got off a link to acution house, over sea`s.prices yesterday was 100,000 yen per kilo, equivalent to $360.00 u.s.90% of japan`s import`s come from china,north/south korea, western canada, and north western u.s.a. the japaneese mushroom`s are worth $725 a lb. the over sized one are package in small box`s of 3 or four @ $240 .just goes to show you, what the value is.how greed can control you, when chung passes on then you got joe lado, next in line to run the black market mushroom indu. chung rules as he will do every thing possible to srcew you over if you don`t play his game. he already threaten betty`s best to kick them off the truck if they raised the prices..he has the airport here plunge so not many other`s can transport by air. thought this might be of interested to some of you, others don`t care.just need a finacial backer from oversea`s. working on that now. the hard work will pay off soon. funny thing is ,it was easy, just had to look ,You all could find it,look at auction house where they sell your matsi`s over sea`s.The rest tells the story. You just need a export license, cash and a facility for prep.,good luck to you all.hope other`s the best,Price in Terrace was $8 a lb. How sick is that ?

Its a shame when your patch is layed out for standing stem logging.Of course all the mycorizal roots are connected to the nice wood with ribbons.I will play a game of switcheroo. Some of these trees have a few on the dryest years (osmotic pressure) creeks right beside them. They only leave buffers on stands in plain view.
