MessagesWTF.......... I think "Matsutake2012.com" might have been into the "smiling Jake's".... Or is just so over qualified to be in the foraging end of quote " shroomin' " unQuote.... That he/she is in a league of their own.... Right------- No university degree here.....Only 40 years of looking, observing, remembering, keeping a diary, traveling...... watching the weather.... and a lot of gut instinct ... I wonder how the animals in the bush do it? They don't go to school. Not to say that having an education is a bad thing. But along with education should come a little humility..... just saying.. Another week and I think we may all have a better time in the bush, educated or not...... Take your trash out with you.... lol
Messagesok...kookiexxxx...i give up. who is it? im right here and right next door. just saying!! lol... found some more lobster today but that was it...good times hiking for sure. FULL BUCKETS TO ALL...matsigurl
Messageschecked #2 patch today not a mushy in sight. oops are we allowed to post mushy, matsutaki. come on now most of us on this site have picked for weeks if not forever.ill bet there is a very small % of us that even know magics exist.ill bet you anything you like that i dont need to know a bunch of big words to pick any mushroom that grows, thier mushrooms.. temp, rainfall and the joy of picking is all ive ever needed. and of course helpfull info from all of OUR shrooming pals. back to the patch not a shroom to be found today.wish the news was better but its not.shroomgirl im just north of you same range, its not looking good for us but we can still hope for the best. stay safe and may the rains soak each and everyone of you shroomers. shroomkid ill be home on oct 15 if you have time drop me a line.
Messagesmatsigirl im off on monday shure would like to go up & check it out !! but no transpo!!! i'll be at the lone fir!!! just saying!!!
MessagesWow. I just like to walk in the woods and find patches. A little knowledge about botany and mycology coupled with many reads and discussions about factors that contribute to mushroom growth. That was quite a mouthful you just posted. I could be guessing at this but, I dont think there are many of us that have a university degree in fungi or environmental sciences.
Messages“You can be sincere and still be stupid.” ― Fyodor Dostoyevsky Skepticism breeds invention I believe and there is a difference between wandering around the woods with your fingers crossed and an understanding of biotic and abiotic factors which influence fungi. Mycorrhizal relationships, timber site index, soil PH and porosity, plant associations help when you're on a walkabout. Understanding that hyphae have perforated cell walls that when fractured cause cytoplasmic material to fill those perforations causing croisures to form which can lead to primordia formation when it occurs under high moisture/humidity and lower temperature conditions can lead to big fat heavy mushrooms in great adundance is mycology. Price control is I believe is not something to dream about but act upon. Here is a link to an interesting article describing the researchers experiment with the effects of electromagnetic influences on Matsutake fruiting and production. Seems to conclude that the electrical pulse again leads to the fracturing of the hyphae and primordia formation. Interesting short read. http://www.isrn.com/journals/agronomy/2012/462724/ Oh, and they are shipping for $32/lb. right now, not $35. Cheers
MessagesHey, us pickers from Wa and Or do post sometimes. Mostly when we actually have something to post about! lol Not much to post about since it is still so dry. As far as calling them 'shrooms? Not everyone that calls them that are talking about the hallucinagenic ones! I actually call them 'shrooms. And I have never picked a "funny" 'shroom! I just like to call them 'shrooms! Everyone pray for rain, or do a rain dance.........something! Our time is running out! Full buckets ya'll!
MessagesAnyone no if there is a buyer in powell river
Messageshey shroomkid, can i prod u for a little more info on the north island chantrelles.... how much did the seller have and how good did they look? (i.e. were they dry and small or large and fresh). i went out yesterday and found a few really really dry ones near buckley bay (where i could get in because island timber has locked from south island to north). I also looked at horne lake and even more dry (also IT is hitting it sooo hard... few spots left). so i can vouch that north island would probably be north of sayward. anyway shroomkid any more info you can provide would be most appreciated. zed
MessagesThe chants in Oregon are crispy critters, still no sign of rain . been dancing for a month and still nothing .looks like a winter crop .I will repost when i break the 10 pound barrier !!! full buckets soon !!!!!!
MessagesThanks anonymouse...I needed a good laugh!
MessagesI picked 50lbs of number 1's just this morning! I was a float in a clound of button tops, the ground was very clear and the picking was so easy! then I found a buyer for 35$ lb!!!!! OMG sadly I woke up shortly afterwards and had a shower.
MessagesI guess when some people get bored they make up stories to pass the time away, but it would make for better reading if the numbers they concoct were a little more believable.
MessagesIve been watching this forum for the entire season and 'BIG LAUGHING JIM(GYM)' is the first time anyone has mentioned a 'shroom'. I respected that about this site and its members. Magic mushrooms do not belong in anyone home or body. If I considered to be a prude thats fine. filling your body with poisons is not smart, even if it makes you 'see colors and laugh'
Messagesbring on the rain already
MessagesStill finding pines in strategic locations, Lobsters and chanties are still out there. Heading up the Saddle today in search of the rare and prized BIG LAUGHING JIM . Old school pickers told me about these large shrooms they have found in the past. Pulled a three pound rainbow out of the lake last night , Delish!!!
MessagesStill finding Matsutake , deep in creek gullies , Lobsters ,and chanties. Going to hit the high country up on saddle mountain in search of the prized Big Laughing Jim , old school pickers told me about . Hot Springs, mushrooms and garlic butter tonight again. Going to check out 23 km hotsprings, sweet spot , not known by many. 3 lbs rainbow last night delish!!!!
Messageskookiexxxx....i will be back up there first thing tomorrow morning. maybe i see you up there, huh? gonna go and get some rest and then go on the hunt in the morning. found lots of lobster and a few boletes so far...we need some rain up here on the mountain. My feeling is that this season is going to be good. Very good. I hope so. Full Buckets...matsigurl
Messageswhy don't we here from more ore.,wa. pickers?
Messagesstill pretty dry here in cougar!!matsigirl when r we going picking or scouting?
Messagesi'm her!!
MessagesYeppers, We pulled 48 lbs. of fat buttons off our little irrigated plots on the south side of Mt. Baker today. It was off some spotty areas where we had picked in the past but dumped spores last year and ran pipe this fall to irrigate. Heading down to our Couger plots next week with high hopes. We're just seeing again every year when we force fruting on South patches how productive they can be.
MessagesIt's gonna happen. just wait an see... Mushroom slaaaying tomorrow. Picked 2.76 in 1hr 20 min yesterday, know your patches, where they move to.. they are there. Full Buckets..
MessagesHi, well, went out today, and travelled the circle route around Port Renfrew to Lake Cowichan, and back to Victoria. So dry, it's unbelievable. also went down to the Cowichan River at Skutz Falls for old times sake, and could not believe how low the water is there, and how little is going through there. Have never seen it like that. Also saw the sign for the Mushroom and Salmon Festival at Lake Cow, and checked it out. Saw more chanterelles there - and bought some even for supper! (only found two buttons in the close-to-the-road patches I know) - that apparently came from the North Island area, where it rained and the fog sits. She said they're specially from where the fog sits. anyway, just thought I'd share. I'll be starting my rain dancing this week. Look out! :) Good luck!
MessagesSounds like the lower areas around the Skeena River are popping.
MessagesWaited a good 4 days for the heavy rains to soak my patches and checked them today. Nothing new to report. One or two gardens woke up but the main producing part of the hill was still silent. Oh well.......maybe next year. I quit thinking about finding a ton and just enjoyed myself today once I decided today would be my last day out. Found the usual 4 lbs and had a great day! Good luck to all who are keeping on :)
Messageskootenay joe, keep me in mind if things turn around. Thanks for your reply
Messageswasnt here yesterday but it had rained some ... talked to my chiropractor and she said it rained for about 3 hrs ... maybe enough to get through the canopy a bit but we need about 3 days worth to really kick in any surviving systems and patches ... more rain and some could still produce .... i always have a few spots that have kicked a few out by now so guess i better go for a wander.... will take my camera .... one buyer just got her baskets sent to her yesterday ... the other hasnt bothered to set up yet and most times there will be 4 or 5 buyers set up by now ..... so nothing here yet .... but the good news is .... it rainedddddddddddddd ....
MessagesRAIN,,, yes it rained here today.... but not hard enough to get through the canopy in any meaningful amounts..... Hope this is just the beginning.... But sadly it will take a couple weeks to show any return at this rate. White Channies are about all that is out there...... Must say though I have not seen grapes in this amounts for many years........ Keep your day jobs if you have them.
MessagesHey all, it's damp in the northwest of the province. my big patch is small this year and my small patches are a little under normal. It rained some in the last while, and cold at night. snowed up in the mountains a little bit and froze the top of water in my bucket when we went fishing. it's making me a lot of eating ones which are gonna be nice for TG next weekend. sorry not much commercial grade. For us on the coast here it should be a longer season, if it rains more, or we get more fog. if not, well, it'll be sad for us who are used to picking a couple hundred pounds. full buckets. stay safe and happy.
Messagesangie, thats because there isnt any. Im in nakusp, its dryer than a popcorn fart. people cant sell what they dont have. there was a flush a couple weeks ago, what you can find for remnants ya wouldnt want to eat haha.
Messageswesternwonderer anywhere along 23, but as right now non what soever its to dry. just wish for the rain.
Messageshey guys.... nothings up cut shift short weekend off. my friends there are no pine here . buddies went to my patches for me and only got eaters. going back to work monday, the weather is very dry all over the province. sorry about your luck cranberrydawg, things just arent the same.(stay outa my patch)lmao. ok guys till next time stay safe and pick lots
MessagesKootenay brother, or anybody from Nakusp, why don't you pick some for me, I tried to buy some in Revelstoke, people don't respond, so I can go to Nakusp and get them from you. Gosh, I'm a nice lady from Alberta, not some greedy buyer. Just getting frustrated that can't buy any where. (403)980-2883
MessagesOur prices usually go DOWN on weekends. They know there will be more people out so we can always count on a hefty drop.
MessagesIt's Friday, prices should go up to get pickers out.Time is running out, with fall weather coming quick. I went back to work this week, vacations over, I have a couple more weeks but I think I'll work them.. pick.. with the weekenders now.The Pop.. It's not gonna happen.. trickle at best.. maybe an odd patch has a few more but that's few and far between. I've hiked and checked my patches for the last month, around the North, and didn't see anything but small pops in some patches. It's gonna be short an sweet season. My back is aching, knee's and ankles are sore, but when I find my first buttons all pain is gone.. Next Week??? Full Buckets to all diehards.
Messagesi feel everyone's frustration with the lack of moisture. boletus Joe... you made some comments about global warming.... my take on it is global drying... at least in the pacific NW. i have been tracking the rain records over the last several years and we seem to be getting more and more dry. also, those pickers around port alberni... i feel for you.... since the logging companies changed thier logging practices from 65 years down to 40 years.... they have hit the prime chantrelle patches big time... Buckley bay, horn lake, wolf lake, iron river to campbell river, yadda yadda yadda..... i wish for rain and a few good picks this year
MessagesWell we had heavy rains for two days and light rains before that. There is no way the ground has not been soaked for at least 2 days so I will give this one more chance tomorrow morning. If my spots haven't popped by this weekend, I doubt they are going to come around at all.
Messages@ROAD 23 so where abouts the 23 are you,, just curious cause I happen to know a trail or two on both junctions all the way up??? Haven't been out yet will be soon,, any pine's?
MessagesJust wash the car and do the dance around the car and sing a song......working at the car wash car wash.... work for rain.
MessagesGoing to just do a rain dance, I guess. Not much action in SW Wash. Very dry. Gonna do some checking around today. Scouting....hmmmm...probably just more lobster and maybe boletes. Still beautiful hiking weather. Full Buckets..
Messages@ Garf....... Thanks for the kind comments. I remember a few years back when we had to all get together to help out a group that had gotten stuck at the Zoo because they ran out of money and food. I don't ever want to see that happen to anyone again. This year has been very dissapointing. Just when you've decided it's not going to happen, someone comes in with a 20-30 lb haul and you think it's on again. You rush out to check your favourite spots only to find out that haul was one of the "phantom" patches that are popping up this season. My best day has only been just under 7 lbs and that spot only hit the one day for me too. My patch in the Cranberry just doesn't look like it's going to come around at all. 2 hours for 2 buttons last week and I talked with a buddy who picks the same area and he did the same a few days ago. We've had a little bit of rain this week so I MAY check on Saturday. We'll see how I feel by then. As of right now, if I find something better to do, I'll do that instead. Good luck to all and don't leave real work to pick like I was.....it's just not worth it this year.
MessagesThe only way you can get your fair share is if you eat your profits!!!!
MessagesPine mushrooms in BC Interior, but prices dropping from $23 to 17 to $11/Lb. It'll be back down to single digits pretty quick if this continues. WHY??? Is there a big flush somewheres else or companies getting together AGAIN to drive it down. We need independant buyers here ASAP.
MessagesTs Shane for your posts ... i find them interesting and feel like you are just telling it like it is ... appreciate the honesty and the care for nature you seem to have ..... i always have wanted to go back to the kitwanga / nass / harper areas for another pick and maybe next year as i am so busy and have to get firewood for my customers...before we get mushrooms here ... maybe if i get back from vegas in time i could make a run up but there should be a pop here by then if we are going to get any.... no rain yet ,,, the chantrelles i got were very dried out .... usually i can be picking early pines by now... full buckets
MessagesNo chanties no pines in cougar yet, Lobsters thats it seen some chanties today on the 25
Messageswhat about the chanties are they up!
Messagesare the pine ready to be pick at cougar please report.thanks
Messagesgee thats funny, still getting $20 bucks a pound here, wonder what the difference is with the matsies here? been 20/pound for 3 weeks, buyer says market is steady
Messages@ 2012......... Fantastic idea!! Love the Bids/Asks section of the site. As someone who has been working on setting up a buying company this season, I wish I had thought of that. Nicely done :)
Messages@2012...... Crap year last year? Last season was the most amazing season I can ever remember. You are down south I take it? The season in the north was fantastic and I think a lot of us were spoiled because of it.
MessagesAlways fun to come back and read the thread on Matsiman when fall is in the air and the buttons are poppin', or not. Especially enjoy the "drove 1500 km" stuff.....keep them coming as those are just the best. Despite the crap year last year, we have plenty of domestic buyers lined up on our waiting list ready for fresh buttons. Enjoyed the good contacts we met last year and am looking forward to doing it again. Got any good pics to publish....send them along. Full Buckets and Kudo's again to MMan!
MessagesIs anyone out there interested in picking or buying in nova scotia this year? Early for matsis yet but lots of rain and cool temps if interested contact me through matsiman steve in NS
MessagesAverage a pound an hour, lots of patches checked, few big buttons coming up... not many fresh white ones. Last rain popped most of the old growth, the wait now to see if there is a kick or not. Price dropped to $12. most buyers were at $10. By the time my area's pop??? the price will be $5. and then I'm basically back to square one again, paying to pick... that's no fun... A 1.0 lb button for $10. I don't brag about... Full Buckets
Messages@ Cranberrydawg....... I am officially DONE. Today was the straw that broke the camels back. Spent $40 on fuel and made $36. That was covering three patches INCLUDING one I made $165 in under three hours last week. 8 hours of picking, sore knees, truck almost died on top of a mountain road and I lost $4. Forget it! I got my fix of the bush for the season anyway. It's always great to get out there and take some deep breaths of clean air. I understand why people are packing up and leaving. Hell I live here and I've had enough. Good luck to all who are still searching.
MessagesHi Rover, Im glad your name isnt dover. Its Ben.. Jer and austin are buying aka Ken aka asians in Vancouver.. Its funny how this market in Canada of Pine mushrooms that go to Japan is controlled by Chinese and a couple Korean and japanese. Are there any caucasian exporters? Just sayin'
MessagesTook the plunge and drove the 1500 km to the Cranberry from the Island. Picked my prime, grade A, bona fide, bonanza zones...or tried to would be a better way of putting it. Dry as popcorn! Picked them twice; never got more than ten lbs in an area that can produce thousands. Dano, if you have an Internet connection where you're at...the PATCH is DEAD! Been walking like a dawg for days on end and maxing out in the two hundy range, which is pretty bad considering the relatively good price we're getting right now - still hovering around $22 at the zoo. Made enough for a permit, a portable heater and a small spree at the health food store and that's about it. Oh, gotta fill up too, forgot about that. Anyway, Shane said it best in regard to what is going on up here...patches are sporadic. I do know of people that have had some good picks but they are few and far between. The rains must have been weird this summer to say the least. Some areas are drenched and some are bone dry. As luck would have it, it seems the vast majority of the Cranberry patches saw little or no rain when they needed it most - a month ago. Rained like a bastard two nights ago though, so they are not officially deceased. Some patches look like they may be coming on, but for now the jury is still out. For everyone's info, the zoo had thirty or so camps when I arrived last week and about half have left in the last few days if that tells you anything. Bottom line, think long and hard before you come up here...we don't want a repeat of 95 (I think it was) when everyone was too broke to leave...
MessagesThanks johnnymc. That's a little discouraging. Sproat lake, on the lower western arm area was a fave a few years ago. And around Horne too, it was fun going to the cave and then mushy hunting. Oh well. might need to go further afield when we come up there. Have they logged near Tofino and the back side of Kennedy Lake recently?
MessagesFound some tight white pines today ! Sweet smelling ! West facing slopes around slocan lake , tasted great on our steaks smothered in garlic butter!! Another crystal clear bluebird day ,headed up to Nakusp to check out some of my old patches. Showers in the forecast!!
Messagesfound some boletus joe and they were bug free ,,and dry ...but then again mine are the whites ...
Messagesshroomkid: It may be easier to say where they have not logged. Behind Loon lake to Horne Lake is nuked big time, Franklin River Road has taken a pounding from one end to the other, Museam ,Sproat Lake, the Ash,Couse, they have all been hit hard and are all full of ribbon for the next round. A very large portion of which goes on log ships to who knows where. A big 'way to go' for our Liberal Government.
MessagesThe situation up north......still sucks! Rain in the forecast all week so hoping next week looks better. Prices are back and forth between 14 and 25 dollars. Some spots seem to be dying before others even pop. Still only getting 5 lbs a day so if you have to pay for fuel, it makes for a lousy payday. Father in Law hit his main patch in the Harper yesterday and only made 4 lbs. Heading out in the morning to check my Skeena patch again....hoping to find more then a couple pounds. Very annoying season so far.
MessagesWas out for a quick pick, 3.22 buttons in three hours. It's looks like it's going to be a good season. Patience.... Next week... good pickin...Full Buckets
MessagesHey thanks to all who responded to my last post anyone have current info on whats happening up north how are the prices and how does the crop look. Also wondering if jeremy and austin are buying up there this year .Thanks
MessagesBoletus Joe - All of the chanties that I have been picking are on the smaller side of growth due to water issues. But although, they are dense and of great quality. What I am finding however is that they do become brittle quickly unless placed in a moist bowl/container, refrigerated. lower mainland-
MessagesJust sayin: thanx ;) Thought it might be worth a trip.. 21 days wow, wonder what he does..
MessagesGood Luck to all pickers and Full Buckets, Be safe. Mushrooms poppin, an I'm off to do a quick pick...
MessagesBen----------- Quote from dano's last post on the 18th................. "well going to work for 21 day shift until then...stay safe god bless all of you wonderful people."
MessagesHey johnnymc, where have they logged up there? I'm heading up to some friends in a couple weeks, and why bother wasting a few hundred k's of logging road driving if it's logged up there. I can tell you that most of the prime areas on the south Island are logged now too. The guys logging for Queesto are really busy. And, Any word on the burn at Shawnigan Lake, anyone? thnks. good luck this season!
MessagesIs it me, or has anyone else finding the quality of the Channies very poor. I have found that there are a great deal of insect infestations in what look like nice Chanterelles. Now I know the Channies are very dry and light weight. But I have never seen as many bugs and worms in these mushrooms before. Take a good CLOSE look at what you are picking. I am finding only about 20% of what looks like good quality are actually fit for the table. Is this just my area, or are others finding the same thing????
Messageshmmm.. havent heard from Dano in a while... something must be up...
MessagesWent out to check one of my patches today and it was gone. Probably the 5th area I've lost to logging in the past 2 years in the Port Alberni area. Smashed the running boards off my Tucson also. Most of the bush is very dry did find a few shrooms in another area picked one and by the time we got home a couple of hours later it was very brown . Between the logging and the dry weather the mushroom patch is not a happy place. So things can only get better.
MessagesI will be in Revelstoke in couple of weeks, would like to buy some pine mushrooms directly from a picker, e- mail me at agricard@telus.net
Messagesjoel, check the trail by the horse corral at the beginning of the rd,sulphur shelf grows there trailside first 100 ft
MessagesRains bring growth and wealth. Good day. Heaping Full Buckets.
MessagesHi there kootenay brother keep us informed about whats happening in the Nakusp area in the next week . It is sounding exciting and am looking forward to my trip to the hotsprings as well.
MessagesI know we all think of mushrooms at this time of the year.... I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts about "Global Warming".... The article in todays paper about the amount of ice cover (loss) in the arctic, is something that should have us all wondering just what this means for us shroom followers. I am no scientist, But I am guessing we will see some really major climatic changes right around the corner. I for one have been very complacent cause when I look out my window everything looks normal. But my gut is saying things are not right. I do hope for a good shroom season like everyone else, but wonder if what we normally pick in our given areas might be replaced with other species of shrooms, or might we loose them altogether. A lot of BIG adjustments coming our way. I am just happy that I have seen some amazing things out there in my travels and have had a few good seasons (2004, 1988 comes to mind).... anyhow just something to think about as we tramp out the door in our annual quest for what we like best. Good Luck Guys & Gals
MessagesI'am looking foreword to "FRESH AIR" soon but looks to be some time before all of the fire's are dead and "PUT OUT" for the year is over. I've been out picking yellow and enjoying the fresh air above the smoke line. We really could use a big storm to clean up all the bad air, but not turn really Cold. P.S; Andy Pass along a land line to me anytime after 7:p.m. (509-969-5324)
MessagesArrrow lakes , Lobsters,Chanties, and a few Pines althogh a little wormy! Looks like a moist system is moving in with cooler system moving in!! Should be a good fall flush emerging. Let the bush be abundant , garlic butter and shrooms for all !! See you at the hotsprings !!
MessagesI had a very lovely day walking in the forest scouring the moss carpet for orange and yellow. Picked about 2.5 pounds of Chanties in 1 hour and 20 minutes. Ground is dry but getting better. I did notice allot of 'already picked' sign and that made me discouraged, I need to start searching for a fresh patch. Real nice dense chanties a few scattered Russala mush and a few interesting slimes, lichen and Polypores. I still have not found the elusive Sulphur shelf... One day I will find you, one day! Full Buckets y'all!
Messagesisland timberlands still keeping their gates closed. they say we need 3 solid days of rain and fire hazard will drop. part of me thinks it is BS and part of me knows it is true..... i have accessed some areas not controlled by the logging companies and it is dry out there. got enough for dinner but really dry. i wish i knew a rain dance... anyone? zed
MessagesPatches are slow, but still producing. Picked 5.62 buttons, in bush at 11am out 5pm. Good day for a walk. Seen good signs out there, just need a rain. It was fun pickin, hope tomorrow is as good. Full Buckets to all.
MessagesSean, you'll be better served looking for an east coast wildcrafter as bloodroot is an eastern plant. Good luck.
MessagesChevelle, they are talking about Vancouver BC. We got rain here in SW Washington!! YAY!! A slow, steady dry mist most of the night last night. Should be enough to start seeing some action finally! Full buckets to ya'll!
MessagesThings are looking up a bit.... Woke up to what was supposed to be a sunny day and found a ton of "Marine Clouds" This is a good thing, even if it is overdue .... Later that normal but hell I'll take it.... Now we need this stuff to get down on the deck....
MessagesAs I expected Garf. Not going to spend the gas even though my place is in the early area. Our only hope is the transition into elnino creates a prolonged season that is late as far as the pines are concerned. We did not have that last year. The temperture suddenly dropped and everything froze solid. Would be nice to pick into December. If anyone is craving the taste of Japanese home cooking with matsutake, Ten Hatchi on w12th in Vancouver is serving several Matsutake dishes with the few pines comming out of Terrace. enjoy
Messageswe havent had a bitof rain for away too long now... things are really dry for this time of year ... campfire bans are coming back on in parts of bc and here it is hitting 30 degrees cel. almost every day ... not ideal mushroom weather ... it does cool down at night really well tho and not much a person can do about the weather .... i guess i will go out and try to find a few chantrelles fairly soon and maybe even check out a early matsu spot soon ... as usual the closer it gets to mushroom time the more orders i get for firewood and fencerails ... beautiful starry night out there ... i long to be picking a big line of big fat buttons , no worms ,, firm ,, scented , the fall breeze blowing .... oh stopppppppppp lol
MessagesHi here I go again...hiking in the AM first thing. Hope to catch the sunrise. Can't hardly sleep. Wish it was morning. Will check back in the evening tomorrow. And remember, if you don't find any mushrooms to pick, there is always garbage left behind by "weekend warriors", campers, and hunters. Pick it up as you journey. Mother Nature will thank you for it. ;-) Matsigurl
Messageswhere u guys all from...are you talking vancouver washington or canada
MessagesNot all patches are producing, lots of walking. Need rain or at least a few cold nights to set things off. Seen positive signs, things can sure change quick out there...I had 4.lbs of 1's, an a few flee'd. When I sold it was $25. at 6 pm. Pickers that know their patches, have the best chance of surviving the draught. Rain soon (hopefully) Be safe an Full Buckets to all.
Messagesstill to early for pines from what I notice,Yet Excellent day for Kings...... "FULL BUCKET'S" from SW Side ~PeACe~
Messageswhats going on with the prices in the north? was there another crash ? last i heard was 22
Messages@ Western.... Amen to that! Having a little bit of the inside track in regards to the mushroom game shows you how much money the big exporters in Vancouver actually make off of us. (as pickers) Hopefully next year, I can step in and make a difference and we'll get the prices a little more to the fair side.
MessagesBottom line is buyers are %*^%ed there gettin rich off our hard work they know they can do it they get the same price year after year it wouldn/t hurt them to pay a fair price,,, GREED is a sorry thing....the part that "I hate" the most is when I'm being looked right in the eye and straight lied to about the sudden plummage in price when the mushroom's are poppin.Sooner or later untruthful will have to be answered
MessagesIm looking for a medicinal plant called SANGUINARIA CANADENSIS ( Bloodroot ) Looking to set up a buyer in whatever location it grows. smjohnston@shaw.ca
Messageshi, im looking to find pine mushroom buyer in the grants pass oregon area. any info and help would be appreciated
Messagestry (800) 439 4079
MessagesAnybody have Larry and Linda's number in the Nass? much appreciated.. mushroomdave
MessagesThe spottiness continues. I've been out picking for 12 hours at a time and finding around 5 lbs. Went to a different area yesterday and made $165 in 3 hours. Just under 7 lbs of buttons and about 10 lbs of mix. Flags galore though so that spot will be done pretty quick. Very strange season this year. My main areas are just starting to show buttons and the spot I was in yesterday is almost done.
MessagesBack from studies. Found 1 small button and saw 3 babies. Not looking good. Matsiman
Messageshope it wasnt in the place i mentioned to you joe cuz its a park n can easily be stopped altogether by the pure mention of a provincial park, they dont mind cuz i met the caretakers but they brook no bull n can make it a nofun zone quite easily
MessagesFry, way to go!!! Be safe and "full and happy buckets" to you! :)
MessagesPatience pays, best day of the season so far. Buttons coming up in clumps. In the bush at 1:30 pm out at 7:30, picked about 5. lbs nice buds, will sell tomorrow. Back in the bush in the morning, going to do all day pick til dark. Full Bucket's to all who believe.
MessagesThe thing about Mushroom pickin' is it brings out the best in some people and the worst in others...... That's what makes it so interesting.... What would picking be without all the different characters... I mean just look at all the posts in the past few days here.... Funny and Sad all at the same time. It is interesting the wild west sort of feel you get when you go to the zoo.... sort of like going to Rino. And if you don't like/want that atmosphere you can stay and sell in town and watch TV buy the pool... Whatever turns your crank. There is only one gripe I have and that is when I run into the type of picker that tells me I am in HIS patch.... and that he has picked here for 20 Yera Yada yada!! Man some one do a rain-dance PLEASE.
Messagesyou got me shroomgirl, yes most of the time 23,25 and 90 .see you there sometime after the rain.
MessagesWOW ....dayjob what are you talking about? ive been picking for 30 years or so.i pick for enjoyment and of course the money. i havent drank for along time, though there was a time when the zoo was crazy and we all drank hard.there was cafes, bars, bakeries, stores, 500 people. even then people went home with money in pocket, the ones that didnt drink mabey had a little more.some people pick just to party but that is thier freedom.the less fortunate may need a helping hand but when your stuck in the mud who is first to help you. my friend you should count your blessings.mabey your dayjob is buying .... well going to work for 21 day shift until then...stay safe god bless all of you wonderful people. and yes phantom glad your back
MessagesWell said Shane, and Pineking. All the best to you.I would like to remark on Dayjobs $10.00 an hr job but, my dad always told me that if you don't have anything nice to say then don't bother saying anything. Full packs to those that are trying.
Messages@dayjob, Do some research on the guys you sell to and you may find some interesting facts. If there is no money in it, i will pick for nothing, and give them away to someone who needs and appreciates them. Its not ALL about the money. Those like you, that won`t pick for less than $12 per lb, are just as greedy as the guys at the top that you sell to, with one exception...you`ll never get where they are!! So, if you think people are wrong for working for what they get, You my friend, are the problem. Don`t condemn people for trying to make a living, its not your business what they spend their HARD earned money on. You should be concerned with only what you are doing, not others. Lighten up a little.
MessagesWow....he really got pickers attention with comments like that, i pick cause it's fun and enjoy being outdoors, if i'm lucky i'll make a few $$$ to. Don't take it so serious..Mushrooms are for everyone. i've been pickin since 1990 and seen things change over the years. i work part-time, i go out every chance i get..'Lighten Up' Full Buckets to all pickers..
MessagesIf you don't pick any more... whats it to ya.. Work... I'll pick'm. Full Buckets
Messages@Pineking: I said what I did BECAUSE of the people I MET and PICKED WITH and SAW EVERY NIGHT at the buyers'. Where you go on holiday to pick----that's my HOME. I KNOW what I'm talking about. Those who pick as a job are a small minority. Shame on you for accusing me of making it up. You are incorrect in assuming I don't know the people I'm talking about. I call a spade a spade. I quit picking when the price went under $12/lb. I know many people who did the same. Those who continued to pick for dirt cheap prices were those who squandered the money on entertainment. That is their right, I'm just saying it's what enables the greed all humans possess to manifest itself in sustained low pine mushroom prices. Those at the top have self discipline, those at the bottom don't. Organization wins over chaos every time. In case it's not clear to you yet, I'm saying it is in pickers' power to bring back decent prices, but only if they work together---like the buyers do---and discipline themselves---like the buyers do---and refuse to trade beyond a certain price point---like the buyers do.
MessagesWell said Shane...good luck to ya
Messages@dayjob...maybe you should meet some of the people you are talking about. Yes, there are some people who pick to keep themselves in booze and drugs, but the majority of people are picking to get enough money just to get by. The prices are low because of the GREED at the top, same as everything else in life! You shouldn`t judge people, look in the mirror!!!
MessagesWow! You are one very jaded individual. That is a completely unfair picture to paint everyone into. Never mind the economy is tanked in some places. Several communities where mushrooms prosper have over 90% unemployment so when mushrooms season rolls around, that's the most income they will have all year....EVEN AT CRAP PRICES! To say the only reason people will pick through any price is due to them being druggies or booze hounds is a sad state of mind. You ever think some people are just poor? I come on here and complain about making $80-$100 a day but those same people are pretty damn happy with that. Are the prices fair? Of course not. Unless you can give everyone a job, some people are going to pick no matter what. I have been working on trying to start up my own buying company for the last 5 months and my main focus is going to be offering the pickers a fair price at all times. It doesn't look like I'll get much for sales this year, maybe next year I'll step in with a bit of influence and we can start to change things. I know of one other startup aiming at the same thing so some of us are working to make a difference. I'm going to end this rant now. To say I found that upsetting is putting it mildly. Don't take out your frustrations on your fellow pickers and assume everyone is feeding their addictions. Some are feeding their families or themselves!
Messages"global warming is probably our decline." I picked pines for 8 years in Notellum Creek, BC. The decline in prices is only for the pickers, right? The price in Japan has never changed. Too many people willing to pick for any price as long as they get drunk or high at the end of the day. Buyers figured out they can lie about prices and people will still sell them mushrooms. Too many 2-bit people will pick for cheap. I think that's why the price dropped. The buyers are just doing what good businessmen do. The pickers are losing out due to backstabbing each other and due to being addicted to booze drugs and smokes.
Messages@ Dano.... I know exactly where you are coming from. Maybe over the next hill, around the next corner, in the next gulley......lol. I don't know how many kms I covered yesterday but it's more than I've ever done in my 20 years of picking. The bottoms of both of my feet feel blistered (although they are not) and by the end of the day, my legs were both cramping on the hills. It took all I had to stay home today. We'll see what happens tomorrow. Haha.
MessagesI feel like Linus' in his pumpkin patch waiting for the great Matsutake to rise... Patches seem about 3 wks behind, were getting the late Aug heat-wave... normal year. Heat with no rain, in the future makes it tough, think positive.. season's not over yet. I still going for bush walks. Full Buckets.. bear aware
MessagesI agree..... if the prices were corresponding to what we were making last year, we should be selling around $40 a lb right now.
MessagesSorry... I should have mentioned 'this year' to my comment. Full Buckets.
MessagesTheres a place to pick pines somewhere i dont think too far from toronto. There's buyers there if you can find it
MessagesI'm a awfull picker
MessagesHI, I'm new on here. I've been lurking, reading everyone's posts for a couple of years. Does anyone on here know of any Ontario, Quebec, or Saskatchewan buyers? I pick the eastern pine mushroom, chanterelles, and boletes. Mostly boletes. And fire morels. I've been picking with my family for years, and we want to know if there are any buyers out here, or a place to start to looking at least. Thanks! Good luck this year!
Messages@ Northerner..... That's not necessarily true. Last year we were pulling in 30 lbs a day at $20-$25 a lb. We got spoiled I guess because making $80-$100 isn't cutting it for me.
MessagesIf there was any amount of mushrooms coming in the price would not $18.- $20. unless you have to drive for them. When I'm camped I still have to survive and get around, fuel hurts. Have to be at the right place at the right time for everything now...mushrooms an buyer's. Full Buckets
Messageshey shane im one more time should i be so fortunate as to pick 5lbs. mabey two times. lol its hard not to go out and check one more corner or over the next hill.the days of getting by feel long gone now, not like in the 80s when you made$1ooo. days for couple of weeks. global warming is probably our decline.id like to say hi and full buckets to my southern nieghbors, may your season start soon.stay safe
Messages@ Dano....... I'm giving up on the season soon too. Even in the North, it's much too spotty. My spots are still only giving me 5 lbs or less and after fuel etc. it's not worth taking days away from real work. Normally I make way more money picking so I slow my business down to a crawl during mushroom season. Oh well, I'll make it a weekend excursion I suppose unless things change drastically. We got the cooler temps now but no rain in the forecast for quite some time. The babies I'm leaving for next trip are barely growing.
Messagesit looks like the weather is not going to coperate this year for matsis here.temps into the 30s late week. all looked good few buttons coming lots of other growth but no water in site.gonna go back to work cut holidays short.good luck to you guys in north country, your the ones that got shrooms. mabey the joes wont get the mushys they need and they can suffer with the rest of us.there is lobster, chanties to pick but they will be over soon also.stay safe
MessagesAugust, and everybody else, I'll be gone a couple days doing the study. Will make a report Wednesday. I'll email you, August, when I return. Matsiman
MessagesAnything happening in the Nakusp Arrow Lake area yet??
Messagesafter 50 mm rain tues to thurs last week, the ground is pliable again. I checked one spot that Ella and Gwen were in all that week and saw no new buttons. Went down the road to the mother patch previously mentioned (40 km west of Bob Quinn) and saw the biggest buds I've ever wrestled out of the ground. I think it's the second flush, but kind of early to be a response to the rain. There was a couple days of temperature drop before that, but is even that kind of a fast response?
MessagesMatsiman, Drop me a line on info on how you would like me to send the "Pisolithus tinctorius" and how many lb's you would like. I have many of them growing around here in Oct into spring. my e-mail is_ _ @ Augustmoon1788@hotmail.com
Messageswell was up in nass nothing up there ,had fun prices are $20.00 lbs for 1s , we only made enough for gas , still dry , but had fun, good luck to everyone full buckets think october be alot better !!
MessagesAs soon as they open my forest road -900 then I'll be back picking my boletes an chanterelle's. T.Lockwood well be here on Oct 8th and the cost is $10 I'll send you more info by land line.
MessagesOh Yes Treeguy, I got it. Locked it into my GPS and is now a destination of importance. I even added it into the notes of chanterelle, bolete, sulphur shelf and parasol mushroom for when I use my rogers mushroom identification app. Thank you so much for a place to 'start looking'

MessagesChecked a few patches early this morning, area's are very quiet. Button's are growing very slow, then flee. Prices should stay high, time's passing an not much weight coming in. Going to make a very interesting season.... Full Buckets Soon.
MessagesA few words. GRAMMAR. SPELLING. CONTINUITY.
MessagesThankyou to all the people who posted good solid info on here tonight...thats what is needed. full buckets
MessagesI hear you all crying about how dry it is and I could say the same but I don't care about how dry it is. I find it nice to have a long summer and not raining because when it dose rain we well find that the price's may well go up and the season well be short and sweet to those that know where and when to it all come's together at the right time. Some of you may need to look exter haed for they may be flowering under the ground for I have seen this happen many times before and you all up north your time is running out for you all. and rain well come to late for those under the ground. You well see the snow fly by the in Oct 5th and 6th your weather well turn very cold and well last tell spring your season ''WELL NOT HAPPEN THIS YEAR''
MessagesBeen finding bolete's sw yet to dry for the big kill, No sign of pines Good luck full buckets all
MessagesI agree with Dano, it looks like this definitely isn't the year to travel around to pick. After fuel and food yesterday, I made $30 for an all day pick and I live here (Skeena/Cranberry/Nass) I talked with a guy from Alberta who came here with $2000 thinking that was enough to get things rolling with the mushrooms and he is now considering heading home while he has a few dollars left.
Messagesman if it wasnt for rumors some people would have nothing to say. you might see a couple of pounds come from boston bar but not worth checking yet. we leave from north and follow them south, never left north country before mid october, every years different though.as of right now there is nothing but a few in bottom end of province.bella-coola hasnt hit yet either. will be a slim year folks no use chasing a rumor. stay safe save home money
Messagesguys the rumors that pine is on in boston bar are false.... our season doesnt start til late sept on normal year, this is not normal year. we chek every couple days or so NADA. no rain yet not much in future good luck
Messagesanyone know how Carla is doing.
MessagesMessages Have you ever giving thank's to the sprite's of the Forest for all you have taken from them and have you given them tobaccos and ask them to foregive you for the many times you left something you pack in and not pack out. maybe you should pray and give them tobaccos and ask them for rain. Ha, A"drop me a land line your going to like this.!
MessagesI've been here in the Nass past couple of weeks and haven't been hitting it hard but I found some pines, some chanties, some lobsters, and a huge cauliflower that weighed 3.3. pounds. Prices started off at $11 pound and on Monday they were $17 pound but its still early, its slow picking but like I said, I haven't been hitting it hard. I'm off to go south for a week then come back and try again. The Nisga'a Nation sells permits for $75 for non Nisga'a to pick forest botanical products, the government office is open on business days. In New Aiyansh. Full Buckets Y'all!
MessagesHey road23. You must hunt on the 23. lol A favorite spot of mine also. and the 25 and 90 of course! Pray for rain, and we can hopefully have full buckets this year! To make up for last year! Full buckets to ya'll!
MessagesBeen checking local patches lately. Few buttons showing but growth seems very slow, even after rain, cold nights, sun....patience I guess. Not going to travel any more until weight starts to come in. Looks like I'll be pickin til end of Oct. Good-Luck,full wholesale bags..
MessagesStill nothing much to write home about. Spent the entire day in the bush until darkness started setting in and only found 5 lbs of buttons. (2 from Cranberry patches and 3 from Nass) Also talked to someone picking the Harper today and they weren't impressed. Grrr......very frustrating season. Will wait ANOTHER week to head into the Cranberry and scout.
Messagesnakusp showing decent chanti's, lobster and mixed pines. rained sunday/monday. keep well
Messagesthank for the report shroomgirl, still waiting for the rain.
MessagesJust an update for those of you who hunt in the gifford pinchot. I was just up in Randle today getting my permits. Talked with a buyer. They are buying huckelberries, but they are few and far between this year. Also lobsters for drying. $2.50 a pound for the lobsters. He said that there isn't much of anything, as it is still so dry.
Messageswould like to know the prices for picking pines this year
MessagesGetting deja vu here in the Whistler area. Hope Georgina is bracing for a repeat. The bush was sure crunchy yesterday afternoon and so were the rusulas.
Messageswell thx for the chat and thx for help shane and everyone else i let u all know when i get back how everything was !! wish u all happy bucket full and safe trip :)
Messageshey shane good to know there ,something going on , my buddy from around there he know the ropes and nice to know there starting to come in, just hope we dont run into any grissly bears yike lol

MessagesCampground closed for this year, Time to pick. Only one problem here. No rain. bush driest I've seen here in a lot of years at this time. Looked back at my records and reminds me of 1991. Worst year I say in the 25 years of looking. We will see! Full Buckets to you adventurers who will travel to Nass area. One place I never made it to and still wonder IF ONLY!!!-----Powell River Jack
MessagesWent out yesterday and picked 10 pounds of 1's. Gonna try a gain tomorrow and see how it goes
Messages@shane thanks for answering well i going with a bunch of people , leaving tommrow night but i let the main guy know , thx if we do go then it be fun camping and checking it out !! what are prices shane right now? please
Messages@ DANO have u seen lee from the mountain around this year yet ? he usely goes to zoo to cash out need to get a hold of him please if he got a number really need it oh forgot no phone service up there lol tell him amanda and teresa said hi!! please
Messages@ Amanda..... I would wait another week or so before deciding. Some are reporting good finds, most are not. Another week and it MAY resemble a mushroom season around here.
Messagesso heading up to nassvalley this weekend, does anyone know if its good up there right now or should we wait and does anyone know the prices right now ??
Messageshows the picking up in nassvalley anything ??
Messages@ Dano..... I was just telling the wife the same thing. If we were to compare how much we were making last year and divide it by poundage and compare it to this year, the price should be up around $40/lb. Sadly, they know pickers will continue to pick regardless. I'm only out every few days this year. Last year was everyday
MessagesHome from my 10 days on the west coast of the island. Really dry n only wet spots near sea level producing and even them not much. Anywhere over 100 m. really, really dry. Chicken in the woods are starting and a few hedgehogs but all together just barely gas money n grub. The rain late August brought on a small flush, which are drying up. Saturday it drizzled and Sunday rained for 4 hours, maybe 15ml., but with no sea fog and sun forcast for 2 weeks it was time to come home. Unless the weather changes soon there isn't much hope for the early season on the west soast of the island. Great camping weather but for picking not !!
Messageswalked for miles yesterday for 10lb. lobster and 3 pine buttons.bush was wet, pants wet up to my waist.exercise was worth it,getting no more rain for 10 days.going to start drying chantrels, lobster. not mush pine coming anywhere right now its too bad you would think the joes would pay a fair price.buy alas its up to ourselves to find own markets. full buckets stay safe
Messages
MessagesAnyone been having any luck in the Hood St. Helen's area or anywhere NW Oregon or SW Washington area's? Sold my biz and have been driving Charters really wanna get back in the bush! Steve
MessagesAvg. number of crates per nite in Anahim Lake is around 50-70 crates. Prices drop to $12 as agreed to by all four buyers bosses, but some suddenly disregard this & went to $14. gyro@telus.net if want pine come here & get into the game. Money talks here
Messageslol.....good one Fry. I agree, I am basically just making my gas money back every time I go out. This supposed "pop" in the northwest hasn't hit my patches. 10 hours today and I got 5.5 lbs. My brother in Law is making $150+ each time out though. It's very spotty this year. You are lucky to have a good patch. Heard rumblings the Harper is waking up. Will check on that in a couple of days. Prices dropped to $13 today :(
MessagesArea's are sure quiet. Not going to much of a season if mushrooms don't pop soon. Late season pick i guess. Gas stations are the only ones making money...
MessagesWhere to purchase pine mushrooms in BC?
MessagesIt's nice to go from picking Morel's and spring Boletes to Yellow Chanterellus with only two are tree weeks off in between spring and summer, and the yellows are still going strong and after no rain in July an August. Now fall Bolete's are starting to show up and I have not seen one worm in them,I would hope this is a sign of good thing's to come my why after last fall of not finding one Pine after years of hunting them. I as many other's old timer's have help people out that have never know how to find the money crop's and needed to feed there family's after there lose of job's in there home towns. I have moved on to enjoy the Forest and to pick with out people witching my every move. I have taking photo's of my new enjoyment of the Forest and not having to look over the hill's to see if there are wtb picker's on my trail. I have missed my many friend's but it's better to let the young newbe's have there time to learn what I have. The Game is only a game but to be part of the land and to give back to the land as well as taking care of the land is really what it's all about.
MessagesRumours abound that we've had a "pop" in the last couple of days. Heading out the door to investigate.
MessagesI hope this year isn't another year where when mushroom's pop price plummage's cause i'm getting really sick of making these crook's rich,,,,,This is why bad thing's happen to unfortunate people....
MessagesTomorrow I get my fix...been a long time coming. Going to my fav spots and getting back to good. Full buckets to all... ;)
Messagesgarf ... not usually but we had a good setup this spring, thats what brought it on.first rains came last night, ill go tommorrow and pick buttons...hmmm. i wont say where i am but most people know.not all are finding shrooms .hadpeople say walked for hoursfor couple chanties. picked same patches last 15yearsso like you said we know the first trees that produce. looks likelong strong year but who knows. there may be room for a couple of good expierenced pickers soon. youll know i go very quite(lol). full buckets stay safe
MessagesArrow Shrooms, you neglected to put prices. What are you paying for pines, lobsters, and chanties?
Messagesit seems a little early for shrooms around here but i havent looked yet because its been crispy critters in the woods ... oh well at least its raining tonight ... supposed to clear off though... firewood orders pouring in ... would rather be hiking in the nass but Shane seems to say it straight and no reason to doubt it .. two days drive and 500 bucks worth of gas tells me to stay here and work... dano do you always get an early flush there ??? ever where there is??? lol ... as an experienced picker i can say the same .. go into an area where lots of people are or have been and come out with full pack... and knowing every tree in my "go to" patches is home field advantage .. not blowing smoke just done it for so long , even with my memory i can find my bumps.. i did love the experience up north but some of my patches here are just as prolific ... anyhow come on rain and full buckets to all ...
Messageslol @ flush in the Nass. Still slow as hell up here.
Messages$17 a pound out in Anahim Lake, rumours of another flush in the Nass. Might be a ploy to get the prices down.
MessagesWana be - Pines in the Nakusp / Arrow region are just starting in some places but quite wormy yet. I expect things may pick up in about a week or so. Fair good crop of White Chanties and Lobster which are still small and young. Just got rain today and maybe some tomorrow. And yes I am buying in Nakusp. I am taking the pines, chanterelles and the Lobster. You can contact me for more info if you like @ 250 265- 4147 or hewat@telus.net
Messageshi out there finely going to the nass is there buyers yet also were can u buy gas since nass camp is gone
MessagesI stumbled across this site last year, and since then I enjoy the informative comments that I read here. Looking forward to some rain so I can fill my supper plate. Happy picking!
Messagesfinally am getting a few nice pines. had to go long and hard , they are starting.we are getting rain now, hope it lasts couple days. sure miss the cranberry though, forgot about thehuge patches we had picked in the past. and like every year the people either did very well or had to lend them home money. the chance you take be prepared to live with it. ive shown lots of people patches there and even with them in it i can still make a living. thats where expierence comes in. dont know how many times i come out with all i can carry just to find people parked beside me with none.the look is priceless. if your a picker then you know your skills will pull ya through times of other people.we all have our trees.my advice to the newbie is put your going home money away FIRST then get caught up in the zoo.you have to were tall boots cause the BS gets real deep(lol).full buckets stay safe
MessagesGood points on the Cranberry. There are so many people who come every year and leave disappointed. I help out when I can and will answer questions but I do have three patches I will never share with anyone. If you don't pick to make money, that's your stance but don't look down on us who do. I love being in the bush as much as the next guy but you can't tell me wandering all day for 2 pounds is enjoyable. Rain in the forecast for the whole week! Lets hope it gets something growing 'cuz this has not been fun so far.
MessagesChicken and Lobsters are in the Forks area. Chanterelle buttons need a good dump.
MessagesI concur, cranberrydawg, about Keith's operation, having bought some chanties from him a few years ago. I don't know if he is selling to grocery stores, but his stuff should be on their radar. and if anyone has seen his berries, in the freezer, again, the quality is the same as for mushrooms, just as high. Another company on the Island, that has high quality dried mushrooms, is Untamed Feast, Eric Whitehead. I do know he and his crew pick most of their Cdn. sourced stock, but he does buy too. I have no idea about pricing though. Full buckets this year to everyone!
MessagesThe Cranberry discussion was hilarious people! The thing I love about the REAL Cranberry is that it is so VAST and the pines only come in very specific areas within it. It is a cruel world up there I can tell you, and you need to know EXACTLY where to go to hit the mother-lode. (and we in the know aren't talking) That is why most who venture up never make more than enough for cigarettes and fuel. They think "Hey, I'm in the Cranberry now, look out! Gonna make loads of cash!" But alas, As Boletus Joe says, they didn't do their homework and they go home broke...More on that some other time. One note on Keith Hunter, before I sign off...I am loathe to blow smoke, so I will try to keep this short...Keith is a breath of fresh air among buyers as he truly has more than money in mind. I can't say that about many others in this crazy business and I have been in it for too many years to count. While money is most certainly on his radar (it has to be in any business), it is several rungs down on his model. First Nation's Wild Crafters (check out their website) as I see it, is first and foremost about education and sustainability and that is to be applauded in my books. And, as for his mushroom business itself, I have never in all my travels seen such pride in getting the product to market. When the mushroom has been cleaned and packed and ultimately leaves his facility, it is of such high quality it could easily go straight to the produce section...not saying it does, but it could. I think we can all learn from that approach. Enough said. Happy pickings folks.
MessagesI am at 510 feet elevation in Western Washington. We got some rain and lightening last night. Possibly enough for a small flush to start. But it wasn't very much rain. It is supposed to rain some more today and tomorrow, then clear up and get high 70'2 low 80's again after Monday.
MessagesFor anyone who wants to see if it's raining or not, in their favourite regions: http://images.drivebc.ca/bchighwaycam/pub/html/www/index-Northern.html Full buckets!
Messagesneed to know the prices of matustakes and are there buyers out there sap, please

MessagesThanks for the vote of confidence Lilly, I never really pick for money. there is just not enough money in it for tha tkind of effort. Id rather go to work. I EAT em, I EAT EM ALL! lol. Full buckets with some good rain soon.
Messagesmammal, The sheep (foot) polypore Odor and taste mild, sometimes bitterish. It is edible and from what I have been told good. Only time well tell us what the season well come to. Over the years I have been seeing a connection with with some of them and have log many of them to watch for the next ten years. I would like to see more people doing the same and in the winter we can log in are finding's over on the mad morel board...........A"
MessagesLast post was for Joel-bolete. Sorry for the misspell.
Messagesjoe-bolette - I agree all this "secrecy" around mushroom picking is unnecessary. I am not afraid to let others know when mushrooms are growing in my area as I see other pickers as "insiders" rather than "outsiders". Over the past 20 years I have been able to help many people (with families) find mushrooms and stay off social services. Many years ago, someone helped me and my family get started and I have since continued to "pay it forward".
MessagesFor me, mushroom picking is NOT just about making money - it is so much more. My co-pickers and I enjoy getting back to nature and hiking in the forest, the solitude and quiet is what we are ultimately after - not the money. The love of mushroom picking is in the experience!
MessagesHey Mad Morel, or "A", I too have noticed a lot of the terrestrial polypores this year. Albatrellis confluens or A. flettii most likely. Interesting observation... I wonder if there is any correlation with fruiting patterns of other mushrooms. They are mycorrhizal, so there could be some connections deeper than weather. Also noticed a lot of the yellow Ramaria earlier in June/July. Does anyone eat the sheep polypores? The ones around here smell... ah, well... kinda funky.
Messagesthanks boleteus , apriciate the knowledge . i believe that you handled yourself well. if people would only listen with thier ears and not thier lips they wouldbe able to get useful info off this site.called for snow on mountain passes if you can believe that. stay safe my friend
MessagesNorth needs rain soon. Some patches gave a few pines. Season's just starting.
Messages$11.00 at the Zoo? I sold at $16 today in Gitanyow.
MessagesNothing growing in the Nass or Cranberry. Wasted our fuel and time AGAIN. Still too warm and no rain for quite awhile. My best patch in the Cranberry was dry and not even the "wrong" mushrooms growing. Grrrr......getting to the point where I'm going to give up on the season. Rain in the forecast next week and cooler temps so hopefully we get some kind of season.
Messagesno rain yet, mushroom growth depending on morning dew...price was at 11.00 ... guy is at the Zoo...rain next week...
Messageshi out there any shrooms coming in the nass
MessagesWell said boletus joe.have to do your own groundwork .Anyone have any current info from up north would like to know if it has rained much and what prices are like.Anyone seen guy?
MessagesSure I can respond "burns"..... First... I think you would be surprised at how many people here were' quote" Saving their energy and not writing anything at all" Second.... I was answering your question, If only in a way that some others would understand. Third ... I am not sorry I hurt your feelings. I was only trying to give you some pointers that most people here already know. You have to put in the effort in this game even when it's a hobby. As you so eloquently put it....."so i tried the easy way." Well if we all gave out all our information gleaned from years and years of hard work walking, driving , climbing, hiking, boating and hours and hours researching on the net and on the phone etc. What would be the fun in that. Sorry you took it the wrong way...... I was just trying to give a NEWBY a push in the right direction and possibly impart a little mushroom etiquette at the same time. Hey "dano"........ nothing happening over here yet, just a small flush of Channies that are well on their way to popcorn.... Sounds like your having more fun than me. -------- Full buckets to all. (you too 'burns')
Messageshello boletus-joe . was wondering what was happening in yourneck of the province. did you at least have a good spring setup,i know there has been little or no rain. our forest life here is awsome but like everywhere else NO RAIN. thanks for any input you have. stay safe my friends
MessagesLol Thanks for editing my comment slightly matsiman
MessagesMatsiman, and anyone eles. I like to know if you have seen in the past,(Sheep Polypore,Blue-Capped Polypore) when the season was dry as we are now and did the Pine mushroom's do any good those year's. I have seen many Polypore this year and don't remember ever seeing a year with so many of them. Some one said to me some time back that if you see many polypore's you may have our not have a good year of pine's. As for the polypore's they same to love and grow very well in the hot and dry weather, and if I'am wrong there maybe someone that well put me right.
MessagesTo the rest of u thank u.
Messagesboletus joe, that wasn't very nice! you hurt my feeling.I was simply asking a question, if you didnt want to answer it maibe save your energy and dont write nothing at all. I am the furthest thing from lazy and dont have much time to spend on the computer so i tried the easy way. You on the other hand must have way to much spare time obviously to bother writing such remarks with no purpose whatsoever.
MessagesChicken of the woods sells good at farmers markets and to chefs, looks like Ponderosa's been wholesaling it, http://bit.ly/Q3jShN
Messagespick'n chantrelle's, lobsters...no money in pines yet....need rain...prices also went down..
MessagesKeith has the resources to set this business structure up along with the vision. Due to great efforts, he has made some important ground for his group and good on FNWC. keep it going. Moving on, found abundant pines among subalpine fir. yep Fs. (some Fd's off in the distance) some yellow chanti's both in Skookumchuk, Kootenays. Will let you know how Naksup is in a week. Stay safe and have fun out there.
MessagesI am switching gears into a different mushroom to search for. Sulphur Shelf or otherwise known as Chicken of the woods. Is there a market for this specie? I just want to eat em but its good to know if there is demand while we are in a drought.
MessagesSounds like the Cranberry is still a hit n miss with mostly misses. I'm heading up for the first time tomorrow to check on my patch but it doesn't sound promising. Local patch is still a no go.....2 lbs for an all day hike last week. This might be a no show of a season :(
MessagesAny sign of pines in the Nakusp area and is anyone buying in that area . Have nice chantrells and lobster to sell , looking for a buyer for them as well.
MessagesZoo is dead....maybe 18 camps...pines are slow..
Messagesthanks for the report matsiman a friend of mine is at crescent he is saying that he only found 3 yesterday and three flags this morning in another area happy trails
Messagesi am going to post some good information for fellow van island pickers..... look outside.... see that beautiful sunshine. look at the weather forecast for the next week.... hot spell coming. hate to be a downer but enjoy the beach or lake cause no mushrooms until we see some rain. zed
Messagespicked some pine today along with chanties and lobster. im on the west side also but north of you matsiman, im seeing lots of varities of shrooms .dont know the names of most but from what i see is that if it rains were good but like you said they are drying in this heat. night temps are low and is alowing them to start to produce. was in same spot as saturday , today lots more shrooms so they are growing.stay safe my friends.
MessagesI haven't exactly picked at Bob Quinn Lake, but around 40 km west. It's been good there since Aug 24 for pines. You almost have to cut every # 2 & 3 to check for worms. The 1s are like baseballs though, and still coming. Now I'm on Moresby Island, for my dayjob, and seeing some plump chanterelles, thanks to the daily misting. No rain though. The seals are picking off the chum salmon in the bay because the creek is dry.
MessagesThere are some points that I am going to respond a bit to since there appears to be people posting this year that are new to mushroom selling. I personally strongly advise and encourage anyone that is selling food to see themselves as being part of the food industry. A very important part of running any business (and I see pickers as being self-employed business people) is to have customers and sales set up before investing money into something (and that applies not just to mushrooms but is just simple business management planning and a part of sales regardless of the business type). As an example, I have customers and I cannot just show up and expect them to buy whatever and whenever it is I decide to bring them. From a strictly business point of view it doesn't work very well to invest time and money into something and not have a customer that has agreed to buy the product and at a price that is acceptable (and especially when dealing a perishable food like mushrooms). We have had our customer agreements established for several months already this year. This is the same thing with the pickers we buy from. Almost all of them have contacted me throughout the entire year to keep in touch and to develop their customer relationship with our business (and yes, I am their "customer" just as the businesses I sell to are my customers). Mushrooms (or berries, etc) that people pick to sell at a Farmer's Market may be a different situation where prior sales and customer relationships are not always possible. That is a part of the business risk analysis that a person selling into those markets would have to explore as to whether or not that is practicle for what they are doing. There are different buyers that work in many different markets and all of these have different structures. Some have specific orders for chefs that they buy for and thus they have a specific volume they want to buy to fill those orders. Others are commission volume based buyers that are trying to buy as much of a volume as they can and they generally buy from whoever it is that brings mushrooms to them. However, what we have set up for our business is to create customers that fit our size and our own business development. At First Nations Wildcrafters we have implemented an auditable food safety and quality assurance program and that is why we don't just buy from anyone that decides they want to sell us products. We are also very deeply involved in working with forestry management/practices, ecological research and we work with the local pickers that are also working with us in trying to improve forestry management for mushroom and cultural heritage resources habitat. We learned the hard way to not buy more mushrooms than we know we have sold at a price that is agreeable to our pickers, that is able to pay liveable wages for the people working for us, and that is at a price that makes good business sense. Otherwise we would end up having a bunch of mushrooms and not know where we are going to sell them or at what price. We provide training for the people we buy from and also for our employees in our operation. Because we know others are in a similar situation in trying to improve their markets we also provide food safety training for others that need a food safety and quality assurance program to help develop their markets. I know what we do may not meet everyone's approval but that is okay. We definately are not trying to be and have no desire to be a cartel :>) But I will say that what we are doing works out well with the awesome pickers we buy from every year that we consider to be very professional self-employed people that I am proud to be one of their customers, for the people that work very hard in our station to make sure that the quality we want our customers to have is there, and for our desire to work towards having forestry management that takes into consideration the other uses of the forests and the next generations.
MessagesReceived this message this morning. Dear ladies and gentleman, we're a German based company, located next to Frankfurt. We focus on niche products, such as "Fresh Wasabi" for example. We want to import matsutake mushrooms from North-America in the future for distribution within Europe. Due to our wasabi imports, a lot of Japanese restaurants buy from us. It would be very kind, if you can refer me a contact person/company, where we can buy the matsutake from. Many thanks. Best regards Thomas Bick www.agrodirect.de

MessagesBack from the studies. Not looking good on the West side. Found 3 matsi. 2 #5 and one #1. Saw no other matsi and darn few other fungi except shanties, The shanties were small and beginning to dry out. Picked about 4 pounds of white shantie. I would guess it will be another 2 weeks before another chance for a pop. Over all not looking good on the West side.
MessagesJoel_Bolete you are right about how educational this website of Matsiman's is. I refer many people to this site (along with a warning that sometimes they will have to seperate the good information from the hype). I have learned a lot, met some really good people and had some very good phone discussions with others through this site over the years. It is amazing how many people do read this site that don't post but do use it to gather information from.
MessagesOne of the things that I was struck by on this forum is the amount of information I could gleen just from reading and being silent. Where, When, Where to sell, How much, Weather in other areas and how it is affecting. Mostly, I have really enjoyed the mature nature to which people have conducted themselves, albeit a few grumpy posters. I would like to make an apeal to the community. Try to keep this little gem of a forum free from drunk slanderous rants and personal attacks. Edit your posts and make a vallant attempt at legible english and grammar. Good luck in the fields today everybody!
Messagespeewees right, the cranberry we speak of is up north, not the one near PR. Gotta have a clue before ya can give one...lol.
Messagesi never meant to insult you keith ,just frustrated at lack of info in a town known for its chanty pickings,i attempted to sell to you last year n was turned away, yet one of your registered pickers told me you might, waste of fuel for my efforts,i do have my own private sales n personal use as well, ive picked since i was a child and its such a shame to see whats happened, ive sold to the restraunt in dwntown vancouver for around 5 years ,met courtney and all and had lunch with them n their wives, ive other outlets now but shrooming will always be in my dreams. iam not n never will be one for our govs version of fair trade and imigration n have no beleif in any real for of imigration, there is n was their side of the border and ours.we sell our resources far too cheaply and let anyone with a bit of $ n moxi do our natural resources harm nuff is enough full buckets to all who belong where they are
Messagesup North I go... checking a few area's.
MessagesHad a really fun weekend with my other half picked 95 pounds in three days couldn't ask for any more.
Messagesnice.....give the postal code also.
Messagescranberry is the area 75 km north of kitwanga Hw 37 to Powell
MessagesLooking for Pine buyers in the Revelstoke area, call Cheryl at 250-814-2480
MessagesBoletus Joe - was that really neccessary? Cranberry is an area near or at powell river. Nowhere near maple ridge. I have found chanties all over the golden ears mountain range, north mission, stave lake, hayward. I am about to do some hikes around and through the mountains on chilliwack lk rd. hopefully finding. SO far its been year after year of hit and miss as people hold thier spots as tight as a sown shut bung hole. I dont blame them, but really people? can we not give a guy a clue? thats my 2 cents.
MessagesHowdee the pines are sure coming in AL... iwish the patches would fine me..tommoorrow will do better, everone have a happy hunting on there patches now....
MessagesBurns.... You managed to post your question here at Matsiman.... How did you do that? With a computer, The greatest invention since fire and the wheel.... I could tell you where Cranberry is, but I'm not going to. Because the computer will tell you. How lazy can you be.... are you as lazy when it comes to finding shrooms?.... ONE BIG clue.... Google IT!!!! If you can't find the answer... then post here again and then someone will (Maybe) tell you......
Messageswhere is cranberry? Maple ridge area?
Messagesanyone know if theres pines happening in valemount and if theres a buyer there
Messagesheading to cranberry tomorrow to check a few patches...not much elsewhere... time's passing.
MessagesAlso heard a few are showing up in Brown Bear the last couple of days.
MessagesI was just going to post that the Cranberry woke up this weekend and someone beat me to it. Hoping my patch up there is producing because I spent the full day in my Skeena patch yesterday and made a whopping $70. Basically fuel + $30 for 11 hours of work......Grrrrrrrr. I wonder if Terrace is going to get a crop at all this year? Not a very long run that's for sure.
Messageswe need rain bigtime... went for a long drive today and it was bonedry.... allatropa looked healthy tho... oh well still early so can only hope that the mycelium is not fried and the fall rains come soon ... lots of work to do ... people are ordering lots of firewood
MessagesThis has been a very long hot summer, one that has the has been over-due and no rain in two month's and some would believe there would not be a mushroom to be found. Now I live on the eastside of the Cascades of Washington State and the chanterelles started showing up July 7 and have been growing very well without any rain along with Albatrellus ovinus also called (Sheep Polypore) and Albatrellus flettii (Blue-capped polypore, Catathelasma ventricosa also called (mock Matsutake) and the Blue Chanterelle's. I have never seen them grow so well in this hot weather like this year has shown me. Now the bolete's this year and been slow but there has not been one worm seen in them. In the past it has been said the more you see the sheep foot growing the more Matsutake and Boletus edulis well show in mass amout's. I really can't say if it's true our not but I have seen many of them when there was a very good season but I never payed much to it. If someone has I would to hear more on this and why so many mushroom have done so well over the year's in weather we are having. Just when I wes about to pull out tell it rain they begren to show many new chanty's popping up and grow much better and much harder to keep up with. If anyone has seen this as well I would like to chant about this on the mad morel board and if you don't hear back from me, you may call me at 509-969-5324. I have been out every day picking and would like to find a buyer for the polypore's if anyone still buyer's them. Carla I hope to see you and try your mudy coffee someday soon. I well be praying for you and your family and so has the Wabbit and Alice and they would like to have a spot of tea with you at the home of the Wabbit. A"
MessagesEvery year it gets less and less......... There was a time maybe 40 years ago when I could say I was proud I was from B C. But every year I see less Fish, less trees, less habitat and sadly less jobs....... If you took the multi-nationals and the Government out of the mix.... Maybe just maybe it would work..... It is all an illusion.... Do you live in a free country? There are worse places for sure. But if we keep selling the farm...... I rant!! ----maybe I should pray. Again to many people in the world.... I have ONE small channie patch left and they are just for MY plate....
Messagestreeguy I know these aren't the prices you asked for but I just got these prices via an email from a company in China that I thought you may find interesting: "We can offer 2012 crop dried boletus edulis Following is the EMP price for your refernce : A grade : 35.7 USD/KG A2 grade : 27.08 USD/KG B grade : 19.6 USD/KG C grade: 15.08 USD/KG D grade :9.52 USD/KG"
MessagesI am sorry to hear that zed----IT has flattened so much of the forest around here it looks like a disaster area....cranberrydawg has a story from last year that maybe he will jump in and share---I wouldn't want to tell his story for him LOL
Messagestoday i have a story to tell..... i moved back to vancouver island in 1995 after spending some time in terrace where i caught the bug.... anyway i met an old timer at one of the pine granny patches near courtenay. he lamented that macmillian Blodel was logging one of the best chantie patches on van island at Buckley Bay. at the time i didnt really care because i did not really pick chantrelles...... so fast forward a few years.... and i have been chasing the logging companies from chantrelle patch to chantrelle patch. every time if find a patch the next year it is gone.... this year island timberlands has closed the woods for the last 5 weekends.... so i took a page out of CranberryDawgs book and i moutainbiked 10 km to my favourite patch today.... well it isnt logged yet but a brand new road right down the center and falling ribbon all around.... now i lament.... thier logging my patch.....zed
MessagesNope, we are just a small family owned and operated business that have our own customers. We buy with our own cash and don't buy for any of the "joes"---we tried that (or had to actually) when we first got started until we got to where we could do our own thing....that is why I don't really keep track of who is buying or what they are paying is because we are not in the same markets that they are...everyonce in a while some of the pickers tell me what is going on but we haven't opened up yet so I don't really know what is going on with the markets....I heard River Bend is open but that was about three weeks ago and I have no idea what is going on with them or St Jeans this year....I don't think you know me because if you did you would know that I do my best to encourage people to find their own markets. That race to the bottom every year is something I do not like to see happen to people.
Messagesjust figured every picker here refers to you as a mushroom buyer so you would have a clue as to what the prices are? or are you another joe?
Messagestreeguy I can see from the way you anonymously post personal attacks against me what your idea of "common courtesy" actually is. As to why I didn't respond to your question all I can say is that I have no idea what buyers are paying for mushrooms....I suppose I thought a common courtesy was not to respond to something that I don't know and pretend as if I did LOL
MessagesHello, Hope you are doing well Carla you also Lobo. Good thoughts for ya Steve
Messagesit's the Zoo, every year is fun...be there soon.
MessagesHeaded out today to do matsi studies tomorrow on East side near Diamond Lake. I'll make a report Wednesday morning. We're going chantie hunting also, white chanties.
MessagesAnyone buying blackberries? Have a freezer full. email evandesroches@live.com
Messagescranberry is starting to pump. we picked 4 baskets of buttons yesterday.paid us $18lb.some people are not picking only drinking, the ones picking are doing good.only my 3rd year here so im still finding patches, all good exept when you meet the guy who owns the bush and wants to fight.i think his name must be crown land. im coming back dude. full buckets
Messageskeith,i asked a simple question,i realize i dont sell to you but the least you could do is post a ballpark price here,as a common courtesy, you might not be canadian by birth but you have married into your job with an aboriginal wife to give you your greencard, theres alot of reasons that ppl dont beleive in you, maybe you should let her treat others as they would like to be treated because you arent being even close to sustainable honour.
Messages- thanks Shane..late start this year, time will tell....patience.
Messagesskmeek you still have my number if not in the book call me
MessagesHazel, i cant find you on facebook. i think we would have to have friends in common. so if you would click like on the matsiman page on facebook it might connect us. Dwigth, who might have the machine you made in north bend?
MessagesQuads are a MUST. they give you access to so many places that are non larger vehicle. Some of the smaller trucks, 4x4's (samurai/toyota) can make it in. Most of the time the places that are available here in the lowermainland are so hard to locate unless your a full time hiker during season. I try to make educated guesses and day trips but with a family and a job, it aint the easiest to find. Anyone want to induldge a park or area or spot to us in the community? Full Buckets Yall!
MessagesCranberrydawg---I mispell my name sometimes too LOL----if the chanties do as well as the berries did this year it should be a good year---if they haven't logged all the patches or de-activated all the roads....they are doing some major road deactivations in our area as well as i other areas around BC from what I am gathering. I think we need to get more proactive in the resource road legislation that is going on....either that or plan on having to have quads etc to get into areas that will be quad only access from the way they are doing the waterbars
MessagesCarla I don't know if you will be reading this board while you are getting rested and healed up but please know that you will be in my thoughts and prayers. I hope you get well very soon and that things go good for you. I have always respected and appreciated what you have shared and done for others.
MessagesHarper still only find the Odd mushroom. Brown Bear is right dead.
MessagesGreetings everyone: I wanted to let people know that we will be doing a Good Agricultural and Collections Practices (GACP) training session on September 17 & 18 at Cowichan First Nation in Duncan BC. Messageshey any one have info on the souh okanagan, any chantrella in the area?
Messagesany signs on the harper or brown bear yet...
MessagesChecked a buying station in Anahim Lake, had about 10-15 baskets of pine. Price was $8/Lb for #1's. Heard another buyer is at $10/Lb. Be great to have another buyer open up & start a price war

Messagesjoel keep checking man, i picked 10lbs chanties today just north of you. we need three daysof rain and pine will come . no rain in forcast. alatropa is 4 foot tall.
MessagesChecked one of my spots again this morning, North of Mission BC. Found 5 good Chanterelles. Really dry still, but at least we are beginning to see some sign. Dew in the morning and more clouds bring potential rain. Found a few wormy Bolete's nothing major. Lots of Brown Russala doing quite well in these conditions. Need a Rain Dance! Another week and Ill check again! Good luck all
